Trip to Cloudland Canyons, Lookout Mountain, Chattanooga Choo Choo and Bar-B-Que.
We can all meet up at the McDonalds on Canton Highway, Hwy 20 in Cartersville. It's Exit 290 of I-75 North. Going North, exit and turn right. The McDonald's is right there and there's a gas station right across the road where we can all top off our tanks.
From there we can cruise up I-75, then exit to go over to Cloudland Canyons and view the sights. Cruise on up the mountain ridge on Lookout Mountain Parkway, over Lookout Mountain and down into Chattanooga to find some good southern smoked bar-b-que.
As with any road event, bring your radios and cameras.
March 17, 9AM, McDonald's, I-75 Exit 290.
-
Sounds awesome - thnx Charlie.
We'll finalize it again this Saturday. Do we need to print out trip-maps?
\D
-
I will and I'll bring them with me on the day of the cruise. I haven't finalized everything, especially the best bar-b-que I can find in Chattanooga. I have 2 friends up in Chattanooga that I need to call.
-
You can cruise up 140 for a nice curvy ride if you don't go up I-75. Don't forget to stop at the falls (if it's hot you can swim, but the water will probably be cold). Also, if you don't want to go to Chattanooga there is a nice little restaurant in Mentone.

I had thought about that, but for those over on the far west side of town, it'd be a little out of the way to get over to Canton. Going to Mentone would take us back South from the Canyons. I'd planned to run the mountain ridge from the Canyon all the way to Chattanooga.

hey charlie that Mcdonalds has been torn completely down , they just have poured the new footings for the new one their gonna put up. the Mcdonalds signs are still up but the parking lot is gone too the and the property are all blocked off. it won't make any difference if all you were going to do was meet there and not eat there. theres a wendys across the street and a cracker barrel on the other side of I-75. plenty of gas stations around but the one across from torn down Mcdonalds is about the cheapest around. just thought i would let you know, someone might get confused when they see the big mac's closed. have fun wish my legs would let me still participate.
-
Hey, thanks for that info. I guess we could meet across the street at Wendy's. I was just looking for a place where anyone could get a quick breakfast snack and coffee if they wanted.
I'm not going to do any hiking at the Canyons, either. I'll just sit and wait on the younger crowd to return.
-
WOW! This would be fun in the Bimmer......
-
The BBQ joint has been found. This comes on the recommendation of a friend who lives in Chattanooga. His first place recommendation comes over his family's BBQ restaurant that came in at Second Place, so it must be good. It's been around for over 40 years, and isn't one of those fast food BBQ places. He said it's the best within a 30 mile radius of Chattanooga.
-
charlie if you want breakfast snacks like micky ds just go ahead and jump on 75 and go on up to exit 306 thats adairsville at rt140. when your'e done snackin just take rt140 right on in to cloudland. exit 306 has more fastfood places and crackerbarrel. once you leave cloudland theres a hang gliding place on the left before you get to chattanooga its pretty cool to stop and just watch.
-
I've got the hang gliders on the agenda. I had looked at 140 but we have to go through Adairsville and Summerville. With a group it's difficult to keep everyone together. I plan to go up to Hwy 136 at Resaca and go cross-country from there Fewer road changes on that route.
-
There is a Wild Caves tour at Noon on the 17th, but you have to be able and willing to climb, crawl, jump and be willing to get muddy, wet, and cold. You must pay $30 for them to let you do this and you have to make reservations. Must be some kind of beauty pack mud and the water is from the Fountain of Youth.

LOL!
BTW Charlie, if you send me the trip maps, I'll print them out at the office. No sense in you using up all your toner/ink. I have a couple of color laser printers at my disposal here.
\D
-
Thank you, Don, but I've already printed out 10 sets of maps and route sheets. I don't think we'll have more than 10 cars. If we do, that's where the radios would come in handy, aside from chit-chat along the way.
There is a McD at the exit just before the Hwy 20 exit, but we'd have to get back on and off the expressway to fill up our tanks. It would be best if we just hit the Wendy's and everyone could go next door at their leisure to get fueled up, or they could stop and get food before we meet up.

These are the people who said they would be in the parade. How many of you are going on the cruise? Now that your car doesn['t have to be shiny, what's to keep you from joining in?

You will have to count us out. The trip to Atlanta for the parade we could handle but getting to Atlanta and then on that long of a road trip just won't work for us.
SORRY. :(

I kinda thought it'd be a major day for you. You guys would have to get up about 4am to make it to the meeting point. But heck, I thought I'd include you since you two are an active part of the club.

8) The Extended Forecast For Saturday, March 17 is SUNNY and 75 DEGREES. 8)

I guess it depends if BUZZ has a new fuel pump .
Apparently the red car needs one too.
Thank God I Drive A FORD !!!!
-
If your Ford was 25 years old, it would probably need a new fuel pump, too. (And a few other things.)

That may be true enough.
You would be fixing it.
By the way it needs an oil change.

So we are going to have to bow out... Patty has to go to the doctor on Saturday... Had some urgent medical stuff uncovered Monday that can't wait. And here I just got done saying too bad we were not going further on our cruise... someone had a front bumper for me for free further up in TN.... was going to try to talk them into meeting me half way (where we were stopping). Then this medical stuff came up...

Donster, Duchess, PurpleHaze, TopNotch, Chaz, want to caravan up to Cartersville? Travel down 85, 285 and up 75? We can meet at the Park and Ride at Indian Trail Road exit and pull out around 7-7:15?
-
What's the name of the bar-b-que place? That's pretty close to me and Gail. We could come in my Ford or Gails Honda, or my gold 86 GT.
-
whatever is cool with me! Iv got the misses thinking about going because she said there is a chance for it to rain if it does she wont be going to see the horses and she will go with me. But that's assuming it rains lol

Looks like you'll be riding alone. Sunny and 80 for Saturday.
-
Chaz, maybe you can talk her into going. Saturday afternoon has been changed to widely scattered showers/thundershowers.
For everyone meeting at the Indian Trail Road Park and Ride, as you exit, just around the first curve of the exit, there is an entrance on the left that goes into the parking lot. If we could all be ready to pull out around 7:15, would be good. Please remember that I can only carry a limited amount of oxygen for Melanie so we must meet Scott in Cartersville with my backup tanks.
Reminder again, everyone bring your FRS radios.
-
yeah i poke her about it everyday so maby she will just get annoyed and come to shut me up lol. Also maby i can meet up with yall and we can follow you to the meeting point.

LAST-MINUTE CALL ! ! !
Dewey just e-mailed that he is pretty sick to his stomach, and won't be able to ride along with me tomorrow in the Unofficial GFC Roadside Assistance Vehicle.
Anyone else game to navigate and share some stories and/or meaningless chatter? I really hate the thought of driving the whole route alone...
FieroGTB
-
If you do have to travel alone, at least you can bring a radio and chatter that way.

Speaking of which, if anyone has an extra Family Radio they can loan to me for the day, I hate to stop and wake Dewey out of his sick bed to pick up his...

Looks like someone took mine out of my car, too.

I need to say it - We don't thank Tim enough

;D

-
OK, joking aside!
Thank you Tim. You represent the kind of people we are glad to count among our friends and club members! Your selflessness character and willingness to help us in times of need never seizes to amaze.
THANK YOU FOR BEING PART OF OUR GROUP!!!
Humbled to be counted among your friends - Don
Here is Tim saying: "Oh no, I can't look!"
-
The cruise was an adventure -- with good times and some bad times (car problems).
Here are some pictures and videos...

On the cruise, we went to Lookout Mountain Flight Park to watch some hang gliders...
One glider buzzed us...
-
Don, you said well. It's hard to expand on that. Thank You, Tim.
-
Glad u guys made it back in one piece! Sorry to hear there were car issues. Hope they were not too serious. Wish we could have gone... both Patty and Dakotah ended up sick with sinus junk. Patty went to her other doctors apointment and now we just have to wait.
Can't wait to see more pics!
-
i agree tim you were amazing! Had a load of fun with you and the rest of the club today i dont think i could have asked for a better day :)
-
I am so glad to read that everybody got home safe.
A BIG Thanx Goes Out To TIM For All His Help And His " HERO SUV " !!!!
:) :) :)
-
I agree @ Tim being our hero!
We are a great team and it was always a lot of fun with or without broken down cars.
:)
-
Thanks, everyone!
Just please remember, I would never have volunteered to do something like this if you all hadn't stepped in at some point to help me (and help each other) so many, many times!
I enjoyed the trip, albeit not behind the wheel of my own Fiero this time. I must say, however, that the Official Saturn VUE GFC Roadside Assistance Vehicle was the perfect choice for this task. I was able to kick back and enjoy the scenery, take in the satellite radio, and carry an amazing amount of supplies and tools.
And Spartanzz proved he's a stand-up guy! When my Saturn disappeared ;- ), he drove us around chasing parts, replacing belts, burning his fingers, etc. for 2-1/2 hours, all the while keeping his calm, and a great sense of humor about it all!
Here are a few Behind-the-Scenes photos from the eyes of the Roadside Assistance Team (no, I don't want to use that as an acronym...):

I will post the rest of my photos asap.
Thanks again, everyone, for your kind words!
Best,

Awesome pictures and good sub-titles too.
In case we haven't thanked Spartanzz enough, let me do so now:

Shanine asked me today why I was curve blocking her .... lol. My answer was "what's curve blocking"? ;D

"Curve blocking" is one of those YPT (Young People Terms) from the Internet.
Much like Tweeting with Twitter, or Googling a Boolean Frok, "curve blocking" refers to asynchronistic maneuvers to block the concurrent passage of a vehicle by durffing (or "non-cambering") the steering wheel in opposite-lock directional fashions in quick left-to-center-to-right-back to center motions.

Thanks guys but just doing my part to help out ;) was loads of fun to go out there with you guys!

She thinks that I was going too slow into curves because she was behind me and couldn't go through the curves like she wanted to. And yes, I did it ;)

I prefer googling a boolean fork or a boolean cancelable, as opposed to a boolean frok, as you get more hits that way!

See if you can spot the Toyota in the underbrush. Proof that, no matter how much you accelerate, cars just don't sail as far off the ramp as hang gliders. Betcha the guy's last words were, "Hold muh beer a minute, n' watch THIS!"
