Title: How did it happen???
Post by: TopNotch on March 16, 2012, 08:50:26 am
The fuel pump in my yellow car hasn't been working too well, so I dropped the tank last night. Those of you familiar with the Fiero fuel pump know how the bottom of it sits in a metal ring (with a rubber cushion). Well, when I pulled mine out, it wasn't in the ring, but cocked to one side, and the strainer and rubber cushion were at the bottom of the tank. I can't figure out how it got that way, but it explains things. With no strainer, any particles in the tank could have got into the pump, and trashed it.

Is that the pump that came with the car? Or did you install it some time later?
If it was already in the car, maybe the car was involved in some violent maneuver before you got it. (Obviously, if it were involved in a violent maneuver afterward, you'd know about it.)

It was one I put in, shortly after buying the car. The car has been on runs, but no bumps.

Did you ever figure out how that happened?

Nope. It's been 5 years since then, and no other fuel pump problems. The pump in it now is a Bosch, and I recommend that brand if you need one.

How was the tank able to get a seal?  It would seem that moisture, dirt, and air would get in, and the system wouldn't work properly.  Even leaving the gas cap loose seems to cause problems on some cars.

I don't understand the question. The problem was entirely inside the tank. No seal to the outside world was involved.

Sorry.  I thought the metal ring was the one visible from the outside.

Are any of these parts the metal ring?

The bottom of the fuel pump sits in it.

Wow.  Way down there.  I was picturing that silver ring setting loose on top of the tank in the pic.
