Title: 3.1L starter for $45(practically new)-will fit 2.8
Post by: carnut122 on September 01, 2012, 06:39:16 pm
I have a starter that I've had on my car for about 5 years (10,000miles) .  It's basically this one:  http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/detail/USL0/32869/01920.oap?year=1994&make=Pontiac&model=Trans%2BSport&vi=1261752&ck=Search_starter_1261752_1363&keyword=starter

It was a NEW starter (not rebuilt-it still looks new).  Anyway, I can get a $45 core charge for it, but it's too nice to let them have it back for $45.00.  I had it on my 3.4 and if the engine was hot, it would bog before cranking up to speed.  Under the theory that I have too much displacement, I bought a 3.8L gear reduction starter for my car.  I will be at RFTH in a couple of weeks if you want to buy it for $45.  If I get no response by next weekend, I'll take it in.   You can email me at : carnut122@aol.com

I was about to take you up on that for my 87 but when I saw it bogged on a 3.4.....

I need to replace mine with the 3800 starter, too just because the regular starters keep breaking the case.

Charlie, I looked up the receipt and I can get twice as much out of it if they'll take it back under warranty.  So far, the new starter is working well, but I haven't had time to "hot soak" it to see if it bogs too.  Who knows, maybe the battery is getting too hot(which I've never heard of causing short term issues like mine)?  I'll take the Fiero on a few trips prior to seeing what O'Reilley's will do for me.
