Hi All;
I locked down the thread on my Little Black Car problem and we will now discuss a late October Fun Run here. For those that have not heard about it, we are starting to plan a run in late October coming to our house in Tamassee SC sometime during the day for cake and coffee. We have a lot of nice Fiero roads and scenic sights here.
I have stated that we don't drink coffee so we don't even have a coffee maker so someone will have to bring one, and you have to drive a half mile on gravel to get to our place. Other than that, welcome to our neck of the woods.

I have been hinting around about a late fall fun run before the weather turns bad . Health permitting I would certainly love to come!!!
-
Depending on date, I'm in...
Might even uncover the Mera and actually DRIVE it! ;- )
FGTB
-
Harry, can we do the weekend of October 20 or 21? I'm looking forward to this. Not just for the colors, but the new territory and to just be back inside the pack.
How about if we meet you and Karin somewhere in SC, say maybe Walhalla and make the trip to Cashiers as the morning half of the cruise?
-
I'm definitely in...convertible needs one more cruise before she gets torn down again.
-
We were thinking more towards the 27 or 28th for the colors but whatever works for most of us is OK with us. We were thinking the same thing. You guys start the run in the morning and get up to our place around 11. There is a gas station on 11 where Charlie and Don H. filled up on one of our runs and its only a few minutes from our house if you need to fill up before we leave our place. We would then do some sightseeing and driving in our area on our way to Cashiers for lunch. Then head over to Ceasars head and see what time it is getting to so we can determine where else to go before heading home. It is only about 1/2 hour from the Georgia border on I 85 to our house.
Lets kick around a date that would work for everyone so I can arrange for that day off.
Harry
-
It looks like will make the run on the 27th or 28th. Let me know which is the best date for all who want to participate and any other ideas you might have.

27th and/or 28th is good for me.
-
27th is best for me.

unnnnnnnfortunately i am going to have to pass on this one. gas money and oil change money wont permit it.
-
The 27th sounds good to us. How about anyone else who wants to join in?
Harry
-
As of right now, the 27th sounds good for us too.

-
Greetings! I would like to throw my hat in as well to make this run with you. I really wanted to be at the meeting/show yesterday but I could not make the schedule work. It looks like I can make the 27th or 28th work though.
Steve
-
Welcome, Steve. Glad to finally have you aboard. It'll be an early rise and shine for you, but I think you'll enjoy the day, especially if you've never been out on the road with a flock of Fieros. I'm anxious to see that 85GT. I've always liked them. (Owned 2).
Bring someone along with you if you can and also bring a spare Ignition Control Module and an FRS radio. The FRS is for communication when you drop behind due to an Ignition Control Module failure and the ICM of course is to get you running so we don't leave you behind :D
-
Welcome Steve. Charlie, as far as I know The Little Black Car is still on its original control module. I guess I should pick up a spare to carry aboard.
I had The Little Black Car in a Cruise In here in Salem on Saturday. There were no prizes or anything, but she sure got a lot of attention from the 18 to 25 year olds. One man in his 60's came over to me and said he was in the engineering department of the Fiero. He had the fun job of experimenting with different engines, trannies, suspension etc. and then testing them for a few days. He said he also had a lot of original Fiero stuff, like books, shirts, jackets etc. I told him if he wants to give some of it a new home to calll me. I gave him my card. I also told him if he wants to sell some of it to call me as there are a lot of people I know that would love to buy some of it. There was a toss up as to the biggest car between a 37 Packard Clipper (Ganster Car) and a 58 Mercury Park lane convertible with a continental kit but we were the smallest car. They ranged from a Model T to a couple of new Chargers and Mustangs and everything in between. It was a pretty good turn out for this small area.
Harry
-
That was a good turnout. Unless you've got a big name sponsor putting on the show, it's difficult to get anyone to travel any distance to a show.
Hope you also got the contact information for that man in case he doesn't contact you. It would be good if we could get him to write up a little story about his experience and to share his knowledge about the Fiero's unknown history. We could give it a place on the forum like we did Boomtastic's writeup on the Hot Vapor Fiero.
-
Charlie;
No I didn't get his name, so I hope he calls me.
So far it looks like we have some definate maybe's for the Fall Fun Run

Donster, what time should be at your house and what time are we pulling out?
Anyone not know how to get to Donster's house?

I am getting a "404 server error" when I click on the link. I don't think it's my computer(I use a Mac). But I was thinking about maybe meeting you guys on I-85 in Lavonia that morning. That would be a fairly straight shot for me. Any thoughts?? Approximate time??
-
Where are you located? That's about 50 miles from Don's, so maybe an hour from the time we leave there. If you're coming up I-85, Don's just off I-85 at the Hamilton Mill exit.
-
We are near Cleveland. We would go through Clarkesville and Toccoa to get to I-85.
-
Oh yeah. I forgot you were up that way. If you have FRS radios, bring them along. Meet up at the station beside McDonald's on 17?
Don, I'm also getting the 404 error.
-
Link is fixed, sorry about that.

Sounds good to me. Any idea what time? Maybe call/text me when you leave Don's place?
-
I get the feeling the some folks think this is happening tomorrow. But it's actually happening on the 27th, right?
-
The 27th sounds good to us. How about anyone else who wants to join in?
Harry
It is on Saturday the 27th.
If we leave Don and Anne's about 9, we should be in Lavonia about 10.
-
Jerry, I see you're looking. Will you be joining us?
-
I get the feeling the some folks think this is happening tomorrow. But it's actually happening on the 27th, right?
Right. We are out of town this weekend anyway. So we should be in Lavonia next Sat. about 10:00.
-
charlie, I am sure hoping to make it.. should know by middle of week.....
-
Jerry, hope things work out so you can go. Would be good to see you again.
Harry, if you don't want to put it on the web, email Don or I your address so we can find you.
-
As Anne has already told Karin & HarryT, I threw out my back this past weekend, trying to get our garage cleaned out and organized. I had to rely on Shanine's friends to carry heavy parts to the basement, as I could barely move.
I'm still in excruciating pain and almost killed myself going to work this AM.
At this point I seriously doubt if I'll be trying to get in and out of a Fiero any time soon.
Nevertheless, meeting place before the run next Saturday can remain our house and I'll still be making coffee for those who show up. If I'm mobile/flexible by then, even better, but as of right now, I'm contemplating going to the hospital.
\D
-
Donster, hope you fell better fast, whether you can actually make the trip of not!
Please keep us posted...
Best,

Hi All;
Don, we hope you get better soon. This is not working out well yet. I am under doctors care for my shoulder, neck an lower back resulting from the accident I had at work with the Carry All hitting me. It was getting better for a month or so but about three weeks ago it started getting worse. The pain is there constantly and I am still working because I can ignore it while I am awake and working, but I can't ignore it at night as no matter what position I get in it only gets worse the longer I lay in any position. I can't take anti inflamatories or a lot of pain medicine because of my stomach problems so I suffer with the pain and loss of sleep. I am starting physical therapy this week and hope they can get me straightened out as the doctors say it is deep muscle problems. This was all your idea coming to our house and we were looking forward to you and Anne seeing our area and house. I had to take a day off work for the run as the boss had me scheduled for the 27th.
To everyone else; We are lookong forward to showing you all our area. I am putting an address below for the Loco Mart / Marathon station at the corner of Hwy. 11 and Little River Rd. which is only a few minutes from our house. Gas is $3.33 a gallon there, so we will meet you there and fill up. We can then go to our house for a while and then start our run. We will let you know soon a general idea of our planned run. Later in the afternoon we will then pass our house again and you are all welcome to come for a pit stop, break, coffee from the Loco Mart as we don't drink coffee and dessert or you can head for home. Your choice.
If you have questions, ask here or Email me at Hkthorn@aol.com
The address for the Loco Mart/Marathon is 11709 North Hwy. 11 Salem SC.
See you all soon;
Harry and Karin

I spoke with Karin a short while ago and they are expecting us to arrive around 11AM. It's an Hour and 45 Minute drive from Don and Anne's.
Add 15 minutes to meet Steve, then another 15 to gas up as we approach Harry and Karin's and we're looking at a little over 2 hours to get there. We would need to leave Don and Anne's by 8:45 at the latest, so make your plans to be there in time.
Karin said the temperature is forecast to be about 70 degrees up there so you may want to bring a light sweater, jacket or parka just in case. If you're a coffee drinker you may also bring along a travel cup since the Thorns don't drink coffee or have a coffee maker.
So I think there's
TopNotch-Pat and grandson (Will Jonathan be coming along in one of the other cars, too)
Fierofool-Me and an empty passenger seat
Fiero GTB-Tim
85GT-Jerry?
TinMan-Steve and?
CowsPatoot-Greg
-
Sounds like its coming together. I would suggest you wait until you get to the Marathon where we will meet you to fill up as there price is down to $3.29 now.
Greg - Are you going to meet the rest somewhere else or are you just going to come straight down to the Marathon Station?
-
I have an empty passenger seat in the Mera, too, if anyone's interested...

My wife can't make it but I will be accompanied by my 14 year old daughter, Hannah. We are planning on being in Lavonia at 10:00. We'll see everyone then.
Steve

Will you be at the RaceTrac (I think it's a RaceTrac) next to McDonald's? If so, we'll just do a buzz-through and pick you up if you'll be down toward the South end of the lot at that entrance/exit. Easier to get out and in down there. If you have an FRS radio, we use channel 7. If you have subsets for the channels, we use subset 0. I'll give you a call on the radio as we come up the ramp.

Sounds good. We will have a radio on 7.

Charlie is going to call us when you get near so we can meet you at the Marathon Station. By the way gas is down to $3.24 and gallon.
See you all tomorrow.

Sorry, everyone...I am NOT going to make it. The car is still up on jack stands....I have had some delays in getting to the battery issue.
-
Four of our Fieros and six people showed up for the Fall Fun Run. Charlie, Harry and Karin, Tim, Steve (Tin Man) and his daughter Hannah. We all had a great run and lunch. Tim was in his car for a change and proved to be a great driver even though he finished the last half of the run without brakes. Coming in and going out on our gravel road, Tim said his car had never been that dirty. Charlie said his cradle felt like it trying to leave the car, Steve was having trouble with his clutch, but for a change The Little Black Car had no problems and Harrys (My) kidneys behaved today.
You all missed a fun day. Hopefully next run everyone will be mended and all vehicles running.
Harry and Karin

Tim and I got back without event. I had a great time today. Much more relaxing even through some of the roads could easily fit into RFTH. Great scenery and company. Steve and Hannah, it was great to meet you two. Hope Hannah got back in time for her function. I'll be posting a few pictures as soon as I get them downloaded and resized and have another cup of coffee. Harry, Karin, Tim and I ended a great day with some of Karin's delicious home made deserts. I would have made the 100 mile drive just for that. And Karin, I did give Melanie the desert you sent to her. She also thought it was delicious. Thank you and thank you both for hosting the day.
-
Well, I had images of limping the Mera back to Atlanta using my feet for Fred Flinstone brakes, but the cool night air and some help from Above got them cooled down enough to restore about 80-85% of normal function. Same problem as when this happened on the RFTH scouting run; I'll just need to run it up to Firestone tomorrow and get the brake lines bled again.
That said, I believe this will be the Swan Song for the Mera as far as any out-of-the-city events go. As much fun as it was, I'll stick to driving the FiHERO parts wagon from now on.
The Mera is filthy! You could say it was drove hard and put away dusty tonight. Because it was. ;- )
Now, if I can get my new computer sorted out, I will post some photos within the next few days.
Harry, Karin... thanks soooo much for inviting us up and for feeding us and giving us a tour of your beautiful home!
Best,
FGTB (Maybe I should change this to Forget to Get The Brakes serviced?)

Tim;
I wish that I had, had my laser thermometer with me yesterday. We could have isolated if it was one wheel, two wheels or all wheels getting hot and making the fluid backup into the master cylinder or if there was heat somewhere else on the chassis causing it. If you don't have a laser thermometer, maybe you could borrow one and take the car for a ride where you can use the brakes and check for heat on one of the wheels. It could be one caliper hanging up enough to keep the pads on the rotor but not enough to feel the loss of power.
Just a thought;
Harry
Charlie;
The picture you have labeled as the reservoir is actually Lake Jocassee from the lookout at Bad Creek. The reservoir is above the Lake and can be seen when coming down or going back from the lookout.
The picture look great;
Harry

Mis-labeled photo fixed. Tim, I have a laser thermometer.

Hannah and I did indeed enjoy our day with you folks. My wife is hoping to go along on the next one.
The widow of the man I bought the car from saw my posts on Facebook and was so pleased at how it looked and that we were actually using the car for it's intended purpose. She was very happy.
I was very happy with the '85GT and how it performed throughout the day. I still think the clutch issue was primarily operator error :-[ :-[ but I would definitely be interested in any low-cost improvements I could make.
If anyone has any future plans to run up this way (Cleveland/Dahlonega area) let me know! I would be happy to warm up some tires again! (and the brakes)
Steve
-
Tinman:
We enjoyed having you and your daughter along for the spectacular cruise!
Your clutch problems most likely will trace back to the same cause of almost every problem I've had with the Mera... they always seem to go back to the nut that holds the steering wheel. ;- )
Fortunatley, we have guys like FieroFool, AeroDonamic, Donster, et al. to help us with any number of fixes.
Hope you and G & H will join us again and again!
Best,
FGTB

I'm going to forecast another Fiero in your future. If Hannah really enjoyed the day and the wife wants to go on the next one, it's illegal to stuff 3 people into one Fiero. At least while it's moving down the highway.
-
Mis-labeled photo fixed. Tim, I have a laser thermometer.
FieroFool, could you please bring your laser thermometer to the next mtg? We can check it when I pull into the Galaxy lot...
Thanks,
FGTB

We got EIGHT of us into a Karmann Ghia to go to a concert back in high school. Oh, to be that skinny again...
-
Don;
Glad to see you back on line with a little humor. Hope that means you are feeling a little better. Karin sends you hugs and kisses.
I go to my first session of physical therapy tomorrow. I hope they can make their magic work so I can get a good nights sleep soon. I'll bet the other drivers on our fun run thought I was not in any pain by the way I was driving but when I get behind the wheel of The Little Black Car, the adrenalin starts to flow and I forget the pain.
Hope you are better real soon.

Bubble, bubble, boiling brake fluid...
I think my overheated brakes were (this time) the result of a shot roter on the driver-side-front. Both front calipers seemed to be okay, so my theory is that the shot roter caused the good roter to handle the additional burden and that was the source of the over-heating.
So, the roter got replaced today at a Firestone shop <2 miles away, the old brake fluid got vaccumed out and fresh put in, and new pads put on the rear while they were at it. Whole thing done in under 5 hours while I was back home sleeping. ;- )
BTW: The brake pads I won at the RFTH17 dinner don't fit. No biggie. I think AeroDon donated them(?) so maybe he'll know what else them might fit?
FGTB
-
Those may be the ones I donated. They were for the front of an 84-87, unless I accidentally submitted the ones that are for the Lil Duke Coupe.
-

I'll leave them in my trunk for the next meeting.
Now that I've got the brakes fixed, my Check Engine Soon light keeps coming on. This started happening on the way back from Caffeine & Octane this afternoon. Might be that I got water into something when I sprayed off the engine at a coin-wash last night.
Anyway, FF, do you have a code reader you can bring to the meeting? ;- )
FGTB
-
I keep a code reader in the door pocket of each of my Fieros. Will also bring the Infra Red thermometer.
-

FGTB
For a Fiero, you don't need a code reader. See this page (http://www.fiero.nl/cgi-bin/main.cgi?ECMCodes).
Note: Your ALDL connector may be upside down from the drawing.
It's behind the cover plate where the cigarette lighter socket is.

Its resources like this alone that make my annual GFC dues worth it many times over!
Thanks, FF and TN!
