At the April meeting we talked about doing a mountain cruise and another get together with the North Carolina Fiero Club. Tim has recently had some surgery and with other commitments, finds that he won't be able to attend.
I've talked with some of the NC group and they said they'd like to do another meet-up. If a minimum of 3 others from the Atlanta area would want to go, I'll set it up. I had looked at going up through Franklin, NC and getting on the Blue Ridge Parkway and driving over toward Asheville, NC, meeting up with the NC Fiero Club for lunch in Asheville, then see what the rest of the day brings. No particular schedule other than to be there in time to meet with them for lunch.
This will be a cruise and there will be little opportunity to do any performance driving, though if it's the desire of the bunch, I'm sure we can find a road or two along the way.
Post here if you want to tag along.

Sounds Like Fun.

TNTCary said he'd go, and waiting on MetalBlue85GT to sign on. I'd like to make this a group thing where each of us brings someone along with us if possible.
-
When I get closer to the date I may be able to commit - 19th is my 40th Bday I have no clue what my misses might be planning. I am hers first and then I will probably have my son with me if I go on the cruise.
-
Just to seed the pot a little, Sharon and I will be there with the convertible....and Colin will be there with his GT...but we count on the NC side for this one.
-
Greg, what do you think about taking US 74 to the Parkway then over to Asheville on the Parkway? Where would you guys meet up with us?
-
I was assuming we would meet you in Franklin, then ride with you as far as you wanted to go. Then when you turn around to head home, we will part ways. As far as what roads we take...well, you know the roads better than I do. I am not looking for a performance run...I don't want to risk breaking it this close to the 30th.
-
I was looking at 74 and the parkway. Just an easy cruise. It would be good if the others from the NC group could meet and drive along the parkway with us. If any of the Ga. group wants to do a little excitement driving, I can take them off on Warwoman Road. That shouldn't take but about 30 minutes.
I was thinking about just doing an easy cruise, having lunch in Asheville, then we could head back home.

After lunch and all that jazz I will likely stay in asheville. My mother lives there so this will be a good excuse to annoy her for the day. Haha :P
-
We may be able to ride about a bit for this cruise. If you go 985/365 we could meet the ATL group somewhere between Gainesville and Clayton.
Let me know times and details and we can make our plans. Thank you!

By next weekend, I'll have a good idea of who's going to hook up along the way. I'll work out a schedule for everyone.
-
Here's the itinerary for the trip:
Meet at the QT in Oakwood, Ga., Exit 16 off I-985, have your tank filled and pull out by 9AM.
For TinMan, we should be at Duncan Bridge Road, Hwy 384 by 9:30AM.
Stop in Dillard, Ga. for fuel and continue on to Franklin, NC to arrive by 11AM.
Continue to Waynesville, NC via Hwy 441/23 North and 74 East.
Arrive at Waynesville, NC entrance to Blue Ridge Parkway around 12 noon.
Refuel in immediate area prior to entering Blue Ridge Parkway.
Enter the Parkway and arrive in Asheville, NC around 2 or 3 PM for lunch with NC Fiero group at The Stone Ridge Tavern, on the corner of Sardis and Brevard Road, near the Biltmore Mall.
Depart for home. For Georgia Fieros, this will be a 3.5 hour trip back via I-85.

Right now, I have Pat, Cary, Greg, Colin, Randy and who else is going to go on the Cruise?
I have to know before tomorrow's club meeting so I can discuss it and finalize the route and schedule.
-
We are planning on meeting you along 365 near Duncan Br. Rd. about 9:30. I do need to be back home around 5:00pm so we will probably head back a little earlier than the rest of the GA crew.

Add Jesse.

looks like Greg and I are going to actually meet you in Franklin when you pass through. he and I both have business there, so we plan to get there a bit early, take care of that and then meet up and cruise in to asheville with you.

What's the weather forecast up there? Down here they're saying spotty showers early morning, mostly in the west and northwest, expanding as the day progresses.
Whatever the weather, I'm still up to it.
-
I will bring a radio. What channel were we using?
-
Looks like about a 50% chance of scattered T-storms. I'm still going either way, but I'll keep an eye on the radar as per usual and keep everybody informed.
-
I've driven the parkway before during thunderstorms. On a couple of occasions, we were looking down at the flashes of lightning in the tops of the clouds.
Steve, we generally use Channel 7. I'll call you on the radio as we approach. If you're on the North side of the intersection, you can just pull out and join us without us having to stop.
I forgot to mention that Scott is driving my 86SE, so there will be 4 cars total unless someone unannounced joins us.
-
I'll have to pass on this one for right now. I'm still waiting on my leg and shoulders to finish healing up. Plus I'm not allowed to drive right now.
-
This thread needs some pictures. Colin and I both forgot our cameras, so these were taken with the cell phone. Gotta admit, those cell phone cameras are getting better all the time.

Those are some pretty stunning cell-phone pics!
I look forward to a narrative on slippy-slidin' through those beautiful foggy mountain roads!

Sorry, but there was no slippy-sliding this time. Nice calm, easy cruise. It was a bit of a teeth clencher in the heavy fog, using only the double yellow center line as your guide as we drove along at 20-25 mph.
I think I might have experienced the only real excitement when I came upon 2 bicyclists in the fog and was within about 10 feet of running over them as they rode down the middle of the lane. Just happened to catch that little flashing red light underneath the seat. They rode by 2 or 3 turnouts but refused to get off the road and let us by.
Before the fog.

Just getting into the pea soup. Most of the time there was only about a 30-50 foot sight distance at best.

I can see clearly now, the rain has gone. I can see all obstacles in my way.....

A little of what we came to see.

This is the End Crowd at the restaurant in Asheville. We lost Steve (TinMan) and his lovely wife Gretchen in the fog. Actually they had to turn around in order to attend a graduation back in Georgia, and Pat and Linda (TopNotch and GrannyLinda) had already departed after eating.

I glad it went well - thursday when i drove home from the airport Ilost a generator - and then the car died about 1 mile from the house - I would have not been able to go any way.
My 40th bday was a blast though I cannot wait for the next one.

When do you plan to have your next 40th birthday? :D
The alternator wouldn't have been a problem for us. I nursed another member back from Asheville by swapping out batteries, charging his in mine and when the one in his got low, we swapped out again.

Pat And I Spent The Night At A Bed And Breakfast Just Outside Of Asheville.
-
The only way I can make it is in my truck. They are having a car show in Etowah, Tn. this weekend at the depot on highway 411.

That cruise was about 3 weeks ago. That's when the pictures above were taken.
