Title: WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO DO THIS YEAR?
Post by: Fierofool on January 02, 2009, 09:23:30 am
HAPPY NEW YEAR, EVERYONE!
With the new year, we will be setting up the events calendar very soon.  We would like to know what type events you would participate in.  Not just events you would like to see, but ones you would actually participate in, either as an entrant or spectator.  Cruise-ins at the burger and wing joints, car shows, weekend cruises, visit other Fiero Club meets, tech and repair sessions, poker runs, group runs at a road course, fun runs into the mountains?

You know me I'm up for everything, but I especially like the St. Patty's Day Parade. My problem is that I'm up for everything and my wife wants me to stay home.  >:( But I pretty much do what I want.  ;D I like the cruises, and the poker run sounds fun. Maybe we could meet somewhere midway and get the two clubs together for lunch and a short cruise? And I know it's a long drive, but we all like to drive, but I'd kinda like to join up and drive out and meet the SCFC sometime.

Track day at Road Atlanta. Although I may have to bring something other than a Fiero, unless I can find time to get one of them put together. How many folks do we need to get together to keep a track day cost at $100 each?
And, I expect to have enough money this year to re-join the club...  ;)

Road Atlanta is a little on the expensive side compared to some of the others.  Seems like it's better than $3000 for a session and they only allow a limited number of cars.  Chuck Willyard might be able to get us a day at Little Talladega.  He was willing to set it up last year, but had no takers.

We'd have to have prepaid registration, non-refundable in order to do it.  If there's enough interest, it's a can-do.

What/where is Little Talladega? If it's a small oval (like it sounds), it may be fun; but not near as fun as a road course. Still I'd be interested.
Will they allow 30 cars at Road Atlanta? If so, perhaps we can get some other clubs involved to get up 30 folks willing to go $100.
Prepaid registration, non-refundable is understandable.

Paul, Little Talledaga is off I-20 between Anniston and Birmingham, and it is a road course.  Here's a link for anyone interested.

http://www.tgprace.com/

OldOne, Robbie's gonna check with Ed Parks to see what's happening with the Fiero Factory Swap Meet, and he's checking schedules of other events, so as not to have major conflicts.

Daytona is a big show.  There used to be a show within a show, with Fieros being the show within.  Due to some participant complaints, the car show was discontinued last year, and it became a cruise-in for the Fieros, without any judging or trophies.  It is a big event for the Fieros, though.  Here's a link.

http://floridafieros.org/daytona2009/

I'm also considering setting up a tour of a private collection of muscle cars.  It's been over 10 years since I've talked to him, but I think it can be done.  Ronnie and Carolyn went with another group a year or two ago, and they really enjoyed it.  It's quite a private collection.

I know it's quite a long ride but how about Floyd Garrett's Muscle Car Museum in Sevierville , Tenn.? or Don Garlets Museum in Florida?
Also Barber cycle museum in Alabama? I understand there's a car show second Saturday of every month in Opelika @ Home Depot just off 85!

Little Talledaga looks like a great track. Not near as convenient to come back & get the trailer if the car breaks, though.  ;D
There is also a micro car museum below Athens, too. The info is on another computer; I'll try to find it sometime soon.

Some of us will be at Pigeon Forge for the All Pontiac Show.  The museum would be a good place to go while we're there.  Second Saturday of the month is our meeting day, too.  Anything that could be done in a day is more likely than something that would require an overnight stay, like Big Daddy's museum.

One of the problems we have here is that there's so many darned events every weekend, all around Atlanta, that anyone that wants to participate or show their car can do it at their back door, and they don't want to drive across town to do it as a group.

The Micro Museum might be something that we could visit as a group on a weekend.

As I mentioned at the meeting, Sam Memmolo from Speed Channel is sponsoring a benefit Car Show and Dog Show on behalf of the Douglas County Humane Society.
The location is Clinton Park, in Villa Rica. One exit west of Douglasville.
The date is April 18th, with a rain date of April 25th. (The 25th is also the same day as the swap meet.)
Entry is $20 per car, with all proceeds going to the Douglas County Humane Society.

Last year there were over 100 cars. This year promises to be even bigger.
You might even get to see Sam wearing a "dog bite" suit and mixing it up with one of Douglas County's K9s.

The web page with the show info is here... http://www.shadetreemechanic.com/2009_car_show.htm

I do have a Word doc of the flyer. If anyone wants one right away, shoot me an email at:
shamilton AT mindspring.com and I'll send it to you.

I went to this show last year and had a lot of fun!

Edit - Added updated link to the show's web page.

WE HAVE A TRACK DAY AT ROAD ATLANTA!!!

We have a track day at Road Atlanta on November 21 and 22.  The cost will be $250 for 1 day and $400 for both.  You must have an SA2000 or newer helmet to get on the track.  Regular motorcycle and karting helmets don't qualify.  You may have a passenger who must also have a helmet.  I believe guests will be free.  Only the car pays.

As all the info is put together, it will be posted in the Club Events Calendar.  So, now, who is interested?  You must prepay and register before Nov. 7.  There is a $50 cancellation fee prior to Nov. 7.  No refunds after Nov. 7.  This a Rain Or Shine Event.  Novices receive a complimentary instructor.  Track time is from 8AM to 5PM.

Anyone know what the hemet would cost?
Is the cost the same no matter how many cars attend? Not sure if I could afford both the helmet & a day's fee. At least we have plenty of time to plan...

I searched online, and the cheapest ones I could find were around $150. They come in both open face and closed face. The closed face ones are around $250. I hope open face ones are OK.

The beauty of this is that we're doing it through another group so it doesn't matter if only one Fiero shows up, it's still the same price.  It would be nice though if we could have a whole lineup of Fieros.

It doesn't matter if the helmet's open or closed.  Only the Snell rating is important.

Edited to add the following information link.  Information about helmets and anything else you might need to know can be found here.

Did a little investagation on helmets for use at a track day. If you go to the snell foundation site it will list helmets that are certified for use in motorsports. The current standard is SA2000. It is about to be up-graded to SA2005. There is a long list of helmets that meet the standard, so if you are looking for a track day helmet, here would be a good place to start. From what I have found, helmets start as low as 75.00 dollars and go up.

If you've got a link where we can find these helmets, would you post it?  I'll check to see if we're going to have to go to the upgrade.  No need to get a SA2000 if we can't use it when we get to the track.  I'll post what I find out.

Edit:

I just got word that MVP has no intentions of upgrading to the SA2005 helmets until at least 2010.  Mark said the SA2000 helmets will be fine.

I want to. Right now I'd have to take the BMW. Maybe I'll have the V8 VW Cabriolet track worthy by then.
But... I won't know untill near the time to go. Not sure if I'll be able to afford the cost, plus the helmet, etc.

Anyone planning to go, please read and follow the Technical Inspection section in the MVP link listed above.  I'd hate for anyone to pay the entry, then be disallowed at the track because their car didn't meet requirements.

It doesn't have to be a Fiero.  BMW or VW?  Bring it on.

I just got an email from the track day folks stating that your car insurance probably won't cover the track day, and that they have an insurer that will gladly sell you a policy for the event. So I guess the helmet is not all you have to buy.
Title: Re: WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO DO THIS YEAR?
Post by: Fierofool on March 17, 2009, 09:53:34 pm
You don't have to buy their insurance.  It's offered in case you have an accident on the track.  Our everyday Allstate-Geico-State Farm-Progressive-type insurance won't cover your car when used in competition.  What they offer will cover you, your car, and any other liabilities you should encounter on the track, including anyone you hit over the head because they tell you that your Fiero is a firebomb.

Come up and see if I'll sell you some of mine, since I can't drive them now. They are all straight shifts and my clutch leg is shot from the wreck. It was broken in 3 places and had the muscle knocked off, they took the rear muscle and split it and moved part of it to the front, now it has to relearn how to work again. I just want to walk normally again. My right leg is normal but the left one is numb most of the time, unless I'm taking pain pills. I just take tylinol for pain and laydown a lot.

Good looking truck.  If you want to post long lasting pictures, go up to the Administrator's Announcements and download Pat's version of PIP.  Then browse Windows for Power Toys or Image Resizer and load that.  If you already have it in your new computer, click on a picture then go up to the toolbar and look under EDIT or TOOLS to see if Image Resizer is there.  You can then post one or a dozen pictures at one time, they will be turned right side up, and they will stay on the forums forever.  Photobucket, ImageShack and phone based pictures disappear after a while.  Send all your photobucket pictures to your computer and store them in MY PICTURES files.

Now that you've got them saved on your computer, they're there for you to see.  If you post them on the internet using PhotoBucket, they will eventually disappear.  That's why I suggested you use PIP for posting.  Pat says you can even post on Ebay using it.  I use it for Craigslist, ETFC and the SC forums, too.

This is not the truck I got, I bought a gold one with light grey ground effects and crome running boards. It kind of favors my gold Fiero in color.
