When I switch from A/C to Vent or any other setting there is a noise that sounds like a bunch of gears spinning, rotating, and flipping doors around. Seems like all Fieros make this noise when switching settings.
What can be done to reduce this noise?

That's the mixer door motor you hear. The slapping sometimes comes from deteriorated seals that let the mixer door stick until the motor exerts enough force, then it pops loose. My 2008 truck does the same thing, sometimes when starting up, if I have the console's rear vent function activated.

The fiero was ahead of it's time and had many engineering firsts incorporated into its design. In addition to your cup holders, the electric motor-driven hvac flap-whacker had been placed our little cars years before it was cool to do so. Before the stone age, and now still, many cars have vacuum operated selectors installed. You are hearing the sound of technological triumph and history.........behind your dash.

Could just be a squirrel looking for nuts.

The sound of triumph and history. Is there any way to cut down the noise of celebration?

Ron, I love your description.
I don't know if you can access that area by pulling the assembly out of the front compartment, or not, but it would certainly open up the whole inside. I believe the mixer door and all is still inside the car. You don't even have to drain the refrigerant to get the panel out. I plan to pull mine later this fall so that I can clean out some of the leaves and debris and remove any blockage to the condenser.
