I've laid out a route beginning in Clayton, Ga. It begins with the famous Warwoman Road, and takes in Bridal Veil Falls, Fontana Dam, The Dragon, Foothills Parkway, River Road and ends up in Pigeon Forge.
Google says that it's 5 hours without traffic. I would expect that with stops at Bridal Veil, lunch, rest stops and whatever, that it should take us about 7-8 hours. Leaving Clayton at 9 would put us into Pigeon Forge at about 5, just in time to get checked in to the hotel and go to dinner.
-
HOPEFULLY we won't get stuck behind a slow moving Cadillac this year in the Dragon! That sucked, but probably saved me from wrecking.
-
One year a Honda Gold Wing 3-wheeler purposely held us under 30 mph for the whole distance of The Dragon. He refused to pull over. The lead Fiero depleted his air horn.
-
I saw on the Events Calendar that there's a tentative scouting run for April. My calendar is full and my wallet is empty for April. Can we possibly put it off until May 28 and not do a cruise-in for May?
I promise you that this will be a day full of nothing but curves until we get back to Cherokee, North Carolina. We will start in Northeast Georgia and end up in Pigeon Forge.
Any artists? I need art or suggestions for the event T-shirt.
-
Can the trial run be moved up a weekend? The 28th is Memorial Day weekend, I'm planning on being out of town that weekend.
-
I didn't realize it was Memorial Day weekend. Is there enough interest in the trial run to move it up to the 21st? Anyone plan to go other than Scott and I? I think Dave said he would drive my 87 now that it's fixed. Work allowing.
-
The 21st. Of May ?
-
The 21st of May of 2016.
-
I won't be able to make the May meeting because some close friends are getting married on the 14th.
The trial run on the 21st will kick off at 9am sharp from the Ingles parking lot on US441 in Clayton, Ga. If you don't think you can make it on time and want to intercept us elsewhere email georgiafieroclub@gmail.com for route information.
-
I'm going to need to know who's going on the trial run, and you can let me know at Saturday's meeting.
Personally, if my back problem isn't better by then, I'm not going. Although the Fiero is quite comfortable, even with the back problem, if anything should happen requiring me to walk (engine problem, out of gas, etc.), well, currently walking is out of the question.
-
There should be no reason for you having to walk. Someone will have an empty seat.
I plan on going, of course, and may take along a passenger. I've offered Dave my 87 if he doesn't have to work. I've worked out several routes, in part, depending upon the weather. If rainy, we will take Happy Valley Road instead of Foothills Parkway to avoid the possibility of getting into heavy cloud cover.
I'll print out some route sheets and have them at the starting point in Clayton.
-
While I REALLY want to go, I may have to hold off until the actual run. My motor has been progressing slowly. It thinks it's too big for the car, but never fear, I've got a shoe horn that says otherwise;)
-
I want to go on the trial/scouting run. Has it officially been moved to the 21st?
I am still figuring out if it will work to come to the meeting tomorrow
-
I want to go on the trial/scouting run. Has it officially been moved to the 21st?
Yes, the 21st. You should be in Clayton, GA at 9 AM. It should take you a little over 2 hours to get there from Spartanburg SC.
-
I want us to be gassed up and ready to pull out by 9am on the morning of the 21st.
We will meet at the Ingles Markets Grocery Store Shopping Center in Clayton, Ga.
176 US-441, Clayton, GA 30525
There is an Ingles Express gas station at that location. There's also a BP station next to it.
Everyone should bring an FRS radio. Be sure they're fully charged or bring batteries.
If anyone doesn't make it there on time, they can still intercept us along the route. Going North on Hwy 28 out of Franklin, NC, also known as Bryson City Road, there's what used to be a Citgo Gas Station. It's now called the Village Trader
The Address is
453 Bryson City Rd, Franklin, NC 28734
Our path from start up to this point will be:
WarWoman Road out of the Ingles Parking Lot.
Turn left at the end of WarWoman Road onto Hwy 28.
Follow Hwy 28 through Highlands, NC and continue North through Franklin.
If anyone is too late to intercept us at this point, the next reasonable place is at:
Lynns Place Restaurant
237 E Main St, Robbinsville, NC 28771
We will have lunch there.
We will return to Hwy 28, continue up through Fontana Village, passing Fontana Dam and will grab The Dragon's Tail at the very tip where Hwy 28 and US 129 meet.
Travel through The Dragon's Tail, pick up the Foothills Parkway about 3 miles north and follow it over to US 321 in Townsend.
If anyone hasn't hooked up with us by the time we leave Robbinsville lunch stop, it's just too late to try to join.
Our final destination will be Gatlinburg, TN. Depending upon time and traffic and consensus of participants, we may visit a hotel to set up event accommodations.
Return from Gatlinburg via US Hwy 441 through Cherokee, NC to Gainesville or Commerce, Ga. is about 3 hours.
Google Maps trip plotter suggests about 5 1/2 hours from Clayton to Gatlinburg. Don't believe it for one moment. It will be more like 7 hours.
-
OK, I need to know who's committed to making the scouting run. The forecast is for 50% chance of rain Friday night and into early Saturday morning. Clearing after that.
I've made contact with a Mazda Miata club and invited some of their people to come along. No word from them, yet, but they said they'd get back to me this week.
-
I'm really hoping to make it out there, trying to finalize plans in the next day or so. In case of rain, will we just trek on?
-
Yes, still going. The only area I have any concerns for the weather will be on the Foothills Parkway between The Dragon and Gatlinburg. It runs the top of a mountain ridge for many miles. There is an alternate at the foot of the mountain ridge that will get us to the end of the Parkway, so it should take about the same amount of time.
One thing about rain. No bikes or cyclists.
-
Time for me to request time off for the actual run...wanted to make sure it was going to be September 16-18 before I do.
-
Yes. September 16-18. Leaving Clayton on the morning of the 17th and staying in Gatlinburg that night. Good to hear from you again and hope to see you there.
-
I will be bringing the new one this year...the CJB Formula with a 3400 swap. The current plan is to tow it to the end location, unload the car, pick up Sharon, then drive the Fiero to the starting location. That way, the truck and trailer will be waiting for us at the end of the run.
You know the way I drive...I can't rely on the car to get me back to Ohio after the run. I pulled up a map of the route, and it looks like a legendary combination of roads.
-
Just be sure you have good spindles on it. :D
-
You're just wrong for that. But it's still funny.
-
Anyone doing the scouting run Saturday should bring along a couple of gallons of coolant or a gallon of concentrate and a gallon of water. There are a couple of long climbs, especially to get up onto the Foothills Parkway, that history has shown some cars will overheat. You may not need it, but best to have it.
Bring tools, maybe a flashlight and if your car uses one, an ignition module. FRS radios and a GPS are good, too.
I just spoke with Capital City Fieros out of Michigan and they will be back again this year. They're coming down early and will be playing around on The Dragon and surrounding area on September 15 and 16 then will join us in Clayton on the evening of the 16th for the official run on the 17th. They would like to invite anyone to join them.
Looking for our Canadian friends to return with and maybe bring a few more with them.
-
The plan is for me to be there Saturday
-
The weather forecast this morning is for rain to be clearing out early morning before we start the scouting run.
-
Tinman, come join us.
-
Still working on the car, but its getting closer to running right. Its dangerous out there, be careful.
-
Unfortunately, i will not be able to go for the trial run, but do have it in my calendar for september 17th. I will try and make the next meeting at the diner though!
-
Does anyone that is going tomorrow have an extra thumb screw for the passenger side vent? I have lost one and couldnt find another in my hardware bucket.
Thanks, Scott
-
Looks like it's just me and you, Scott. I believe I have some, but they'd be out in my building in bunches of bolts and nuts. I can mail one to you after we get back.
-
A very enjoyable day, yesterday. Good weather with only a couple of sprinkles. Lots of Nissan Z's to play with on The Dragon and Hwy 28. We met up with Former Member and donor of the 88GT Warrior Pro9ject car, Mike Barr, when we got to Gatlinburg.
Here are a couple of pictures taken along our route. More to come later today.
Looking toward Knoxville from the Foothills Parkway.

Just a little of the 13 miles of river alongside the River Gorge Road as we approached Gatlinburg.
-
There were a couple of small issues yesterday. First, after driving War Woman Road I felt a vibration and after stopping found a wheel with some loose lugnuts. Oops, my fault after rotating tires.
The other problem was a rookie driver trying to keep up with a maniac on the Dragon resulting in overheated brakes. Lesson learned there.
It was a very good drive, there will be something for everyone. Looking very forward to doing it again

I don't know if I should take that as a compliment or a slap in the back of the head. But I do agree, it was a very enjoyable drive. Some new territory, even for most of our regular RFTH participants. Maybe we'll also get to see some of the new scenery Scott and I saw.

One dumb woman with New York plates on her vehicle actually got out and walked to the middle of the lane to take a picture. Had to yell at her that it wasn't such a good idea because they could be dangerous. But the most stupid of all were the 50 or so people standing in the roadway looking up the tree at the BEAR!

It must be safe. The Crocodile Hunter does it all the time!

Nice rooms, I might consider going. My gold 86GT is back at home now and I've been driving it.
-
Just 1 month left to make your reservations at the Edgewater in Gatlinburg and receive the club discount. The Clayton, Ga. window is essentially open up until the day of the event as the Days Inn wouldn't give us a group discount. You may find better prices at Days Inn on some of the online sites.
This year, there will not be a fundraising raffle. Each year, we request product and service donations from the many Fiero product and service vendors, but we won't be doing that due to the difficulty of transporting donated products from one point to another during our travels.
The only item we will have for fundraising this year will be our Event T-shirts. The profit from their sales will help us to continue our charity events. I would like to urge you to purchase a shirt this year, even if you don't wear it, put it away as a souvenir of the event. This is the base image of the T-shirt design, before we apply the graphics.
-
Got my reservation for the Days Inn in Clayton for the 16th and at the Edgewater for the 17th. (thanks Charlie!)
The Edgewater won't guarantee what room you get until the morning of your arrival.
I saved $21 for the Days Inn by going to https://refer.booking.com/s/5aswh
and you can too!
They did promise a bathtub full of grits and a duck that quacks with a lisp.
-
Has anyone on here made reservations at Edgewater in Gatlinburg using the Georgia Fiero Club group discount? I spoke with them today and they said that there is only 1 other reservation besides mine.
-
Well, I guess I should have asked has anyone here made reservations at Edgewater using any other method?
-
I reserved a couple of rooms today.
-
Now taking orders for RFTH 21 t-shirts. Order your shirts here (http://gafiero.org/shop.shtml), or send payment to:
Georgia Fieros
287 Park Place
Auburn, Ga. 30011-3035
This year, all sizes are $24.00.
Deadline Sept. 9
Delivered at the event.
Postage extra for mail delivery.

-
A reminder: If you are attending the event and plan to stay at the Edgewater in Gatlinbufg, you only have until the 18tho to make reservations.
-
I just made my reservation at the Days Inn in Clayton. I'll see y'all on the 16th!
-
I received a call from them this afternoon, asking if anyone was going to reserve any of the rooms I blocked out. They only had my room and maybe 2 more that had identified themselves as being with the Georgia Fieros group. They removed 10 rooms from our block, leaving a total of 10 rooms.
Did you make reservations in Gatlinburg? Tomorrow, the 18th is the last day to get our discount.
-
A reminder that today, Midnight is your last opportunity to receive the Georgia Fieros rates at The Edgewater Inn in Gatlinburg. If you plan to wait and get a room somewhere else, don't be surprised at the rates, usually in the $150 and up range, even if you can get a room.
They limit 1 car per room, but I was told that if all rooms aren't taken or there were cancellations, they would make allowances. They also have free parking arrangements with a parking area just across the street from the hotel. So, if you're sharing a room with another driver, go ahead and make your reservation.
NO PETS.
-
I won't be there.
-
You could come to Robbinsville again and meet us for lunch. Lynn's Place on E. Main, downtown across the street from the county jail. We should be there around noon. I'll be there this time and I'll buy.
-
I'm posting this only on the Georgia Forum, hoping I can get some better attendance from our members. Even though the announced deadline is past to take advantage of the discounted rate at the Edgewater Inn, Kahla told me privately that if all our rooms hadn't been booked, and there were still some rooms available, she would honor the $100 discount. So far, we only have 7 of the 20 rooms taken, and some of those are not by Georgia Fieros people.
Call the hotel at 800-423-9582 and make your reservation under the Georgia Fieros group rates. If it turns out you can't go, I believe you have 72 hours prior to cancel without being charged. You can ask at the time you make the call. If the front desk won't honor the rate, ask to speak to Kahla Williams. Her direct number is 865-277-0159.
-
If any member is interested in going to RFTH and driving one of my cars or The Lil Duke Coupe, they are available. I spoke with Dave and CowsPatoot today and it looks like neither of them will be making the run. It looks like Dave will be taking on a heavier work load and Greg has urgent family business to attend to. That means that Sharon won't be coming, either. Ron R. also called to say that it's looking more like he will be cancelling, too.
I had planned to let Dave drive the 87 and Greg and Sharon were to drive the Coupe. I was planning to drive the 86. So, if any of you want to change your plans for the 16-18, let me know.
Steve, do you know if Amanda plans to tag along with us?
-
Amanda won't be coming this year, unless something has changed.
I'm still planning to go. Won't be staying at the Days Inn, however. If you hear of a cancellation, don't be alarmed. :D
-
If you are buying I might be there in my truck. Did my 86 GT sound alright to you Charlie?
-
What day should I be there in my truck? Gail would like it to be on a Saturday, so she can come too.
-
September 17, Lynn's Place Restaurant, E. Main Street across from the county jail, Robbinsville, NC. Sometime around 11:30-12:00 is our projected time of arrival.
-
We'll see you there, but we'll buy our own meals.
-
I expect to be at the Days Inn in Clayton at least by 2PM, Friday Sept. 16. I will have your Tshirts and participant packages that includes registration forms, route sheets, and some information about Gatlinburg and the surrounding National Parks area. Please find me to get your information package.
-
We will be there with bells on..... will meet everyone Saturday morning. Room was reserved this afternoon.
-
Charlie, can you email the route sheet to me?
I'm not staying at the Days Inn, but I'm planning to meet y'all on Saturday morning.
Just in case I run late. I certainly don't expect everyone to wait...
Thanks!
-
I'm on my way...
-
We passed an AirGas truck on the way up. That you?
-
Nope, but i did stay at a holiday inn last night haha!
I'm taking the scenic route from Memphis, tn to Clayton.....Uh, Ga right?
-
Yes. Georgia. If you go to Clayton, TN., beware of the 35 mph zone. I got to meet the Chief of Police and she ain't very forgiving.
-
Rfth 21 is underway!

-
Beautiful!
-
We only saw one car fall off the road. Not one of ours, but rumer has it that a Saturn sky might be in the running as a doner vehicle for the next swap.........
A very fun day. Didn't get lost this time. The only issue was getting scarce fuel. Lots of fun and beautiful scenery too!

I got to see a great bunch of Fiero nuts. See you again soon.
-
Thank you, Robbie and Gail for making the trip to join us for lunch. It was great to see you both and to see you're doing so well. I apologize for not being able to stay and visit longer.
-
So Cool!
-
Excellent pix!
Thank you and thanks to all who attended!
For those of you who didn't / couldn't make it . . . there's next year!
-
Good to see everyone again.
Rob... I'm happy that y'all came down to meet us. Good to see you again. It's been a while.
Thanks to everyone who worked so hard to make this a success (especially you, Charlie.) It was very much appreciated.
This was one of the few times I've run the Dragon that traffic didn't get in the way. (Well... except for that one Corvette - edited out.)
Here's a few minutes of video I captured.
-
I want to say thanks to Mr. fool for taking the time to organize this year's event. It does take an awful lot of time and dedication to put it together. Other than the bit of trouble with my car, everything went off without a hitch. Leigh-Ann even made some new friends in Tammy and Carolyn. Personally I was quite impressed with this years choice of restaurant. Oh my goodness was that some good barbecue. I WILL be back there. I did email Pat some pictures that we took. If he thinks they are worthy I'm sure they will be posted.
I would also like to thank everyone for singing Happy Birthday to Leigh-Ann with me. She was quite surprised. Thanks everyone. ;)
And to let everyone know, my car has not had the hiccups since Saturday.
Thanks again Mr. fool.
-
ANd Ron....... what are you doing laying across your poor car like that???????????
-
Scott, it wasn't just me. Thanks for your help in laying this out. It doesn't matter how many and who's involved with all that's involved with getting it to the day of the event, it's only as good as those who show up. Remember the saying "They threw a party and nobody came"?
I frequently see or hear "I'll try to make it next year" or "There's always next year". Reminds me of The Fiero Factory Swap Meet admonition "Swap Meet Number "X" And Maybe The Last" Don't wait until the last one was last year. Without you all there is no party. There is no Run For The Hills.
-
Fun on Warwoman Road...
-
ANd Ron....... what are you doing laying across your poor car like that???????????
...poor thing is right! It looks like it's struggling to hold me up! Looks like it's about to cry!

-
Wow... Michigan, Texas, Florida... That's great! This looks like a really fun event.
Maybe Ronda and I can tag along in 2017.
-
I had a great time again! Thanks, Charlie, for all of your hard work! Steve, loved the video! I'm kinda bummed I missed Mike Barr.
-
Thanks goes to Scott, too. Lots of help from him.
-
Thank you the Honorable Mention Mr. Fool
-
This looks like a lot of fun. I read somewhere that there are likely to be overheating issues. Did that happen?
-
There were none. We didn't have to use the alternate to get on the Foothills Parkway which was a slower, steeper climb and traffic allowed us to keep good speed throughout the run. Except for that Corvette.
