I've never known of anyone locally that rebuilds them.  Any of the Fiero transmissions, other than the automatic, for that matter.  There's possibly someone in Powder Springs and another in North Carolina.  I'll check with them and post back.  Changing over to the F23 might be a better option, or depending upon your driving style, a more plentiful and cheaper Isuzu 5-speed.

Southern Gear, in West Atlanta(?) has rebuilt Getrags in the past. They are NOT inexpensive. (I received an estimate of over $1k. This was over 5 years ago.)
There was another outfit in Florida who sells rebuilt units, but I forget their name.

Another option is a ~'93 "Beretta Getrag" aka New Venture Gear T-550. It is essentially a later generation Getrag. Bolts in to the stock Fiero Getrag mounting brackets. It uses a hydraulic release bearing, instead of the usual slave cylinder and release fork. The differential gears are sturdier than the Fiero (and other earlier) units.
I have one bolted to my 4.9, and really like it.
I can post a link, later on, if you are interested. I can't get to that forum from work.

I got confirmation from NC that there is someone there that can do the job.  Waiting to hear back if he can take it on at the moment.  Is the trans out of the car?  Can you get the trans or car up to NC?

Rodney Dickman sells a rebuild manual for the Getrag. Or, if you have the 88 Helms manual, the info is in there.

The word from NC isn't good.  A 1 ton press is needed to separate the shaft from the bellhousing and there are a lot of detent balls that require tooling to hold them in place during assembly.  If lost, they are hard to come by.  He doesn't have the time and recommends that if you have it rebuilt, that you use a very reputable shop.  He suggests just finding a replacement.  I suppose that could include an upgrade.

Isn't the Cavalier trans the same one used in the Berettas?  Give us regular updates on what you're doing, whether rebuild or transplant.  Pictures are always welcome.

If all else fails, I've got an 85 Muncie four speed with rock crusher gears I'll sell you. I it'll be about 300 rpm higher on the highway.

Here's a link to my Beretta Getrag swap. (Yes, the 3.1 Cavalier used the same trans. Several other cars, too.)

Pat, can you host the Getrag rebuild document on the "Fiero Documents" page? It's 18.5 MB.
I don't have any way to share it, and it's probably too big to email.
