I was wondering how you handled meetings around holidays.
-
It's discussed at meetings and we will work around them. Changes are posted on the home page. Usually, it only happens around Christmas.
-
The meetings are on the 2nd Saturday, which will be the 8th, so I changed the message (with apologies to GrannyLinda).

So,has anyone looked into the traffic problem due to the bridges out on I-85?
-
Oh, it's a problem, all right.
285 is bearing the brunt of it.
They're actually saying that they think it'll be fixed by June 15th. 700' of bridge. (350' in each direction.)
-
Hmmm. This bridge shows that it wasn't ”structurally deficient”. It looks like an elevated road, to me. There didn't seem to be roads or water below it. I'd worry about the rest of the spans on that elevated road, fire or no fire.
Fixed in 2 months? We're lucky if bridges get fixed in 2 YEARS, here.
-
Piedmont Road, a main surface street passes underneath the elevated I-85 at that point. All the PVC and fiberoptic cable was stored underneath the elevated interstate. There's not much free area there due to the old I-85, now called the Buford Hwy-Spring Street Connector that runs parallel and Peachtree Creek which runs parallel on the other side.
One of our former members who lives downtown originally thought it was construction materials for a nearby apartment complex. It isn't unusual for materials to be stored underneath bridges, especially if it relates to highway work. At our famous Spaghetti Junction at I-85 North and I-285, there are large Quonset buildings underneath and adjacent to supporting columns that are over 100 feet tall.
The Connector has been reopened, so that is taking some of the load off the surface streets, and I-85 has been reopened from Spaghetti Junction down to the last exit before the damaged area. That puts Southbound traffic onto the Connector or Piedmont Road, either side of the damaged area.

My uneducated unsolicited opinion is that it will be open by Memorial Day weekend. Its going to one of those projects of just fix it, we will pay for it later. I think it will be done faster than everyone thinks it will. Those that have been here for a while will remember almost the same thing happened a few years ago at 285 & 400. Gas tanker truck rolled over & burned. Granted the bridge didn't fall, but part of it had to be rebuilt. I believe that project was less than 6 weeks, and they had to deal with the traffic still moving at the site.
-
Will that bridge affect attendance at the meeting tomorrow?
-
Generally, no. Melanie and I drove down past The Diner yesterday and I ran 70-75 all the way, about 15 miles distance. It may affect Ron768, Raydar, DeShoe, 2500fps, MikeMac and others coming from the west side. GPS traffic information systems have already been updated with road closures.
The State has already allocated a bunch of funds to get the project started and have asked for federal funds since it's part of a major federal highway system.

...
Clark Howard shares your opinion. I hope you both are right.
-
Well, I plan on using 285 tomorrow. Just hope that it isn't to backed up by the time I get there.
-
It might be best to take I-20 straight through to I-285 on the East side, rather than having to come through the I-75, Ga. 400 and I-85 interchanges on the North side.
-
I called The Diner this afternoon and reminded them of the meeting tomorrow. I though our seating arrangement against the center wall worked out well last month and asked that we be seated there again.
What's on the agenda for this month?
-
Sorry folks. I won't be able to be at the meeting tomorrow. :(
-
I hope everyone makes the meeting with minimal stress or delay.
-
At the diner.

Our next meeting will be at The Galaxy Diner at 10 AM on May 13th. After breakfast, we will drive 2 exits down I-285 to LaVista Road and MikeMac's Northlake Automotive shop for a tech day. We will be delving into the Fiero tilt column, looking at some tuning issues, possibly clutch hydraulics and maybe more. Bring your tools if you want to help, or just come and watch to learn about your car.

I should get there ( the garage ) about 12:30-1:00 pm.
