Title: RFTH 23 Rerun
Post by: Fierofool on October 08, 2018, 07:30:52 pm
It's been asked about a Rerun of the RFTH 23 event.  Looking at possibly the last Saturday of October.  Who's up for it?  It will be a much more leisurely day than the official event.

I'm interested. I might be able to make it, but I can't make any guarantees.

For me, that's the only weekend in October that I can do it.  Granddaughter's birthday is the weekend before.

How do you do a leisurely run in 1 day, without hotel, but the fast run takes a hotel?

The hotel is because participants come from further away than they generally come for a rerun.  There is also the Saturday evening dinner after the run.  Some locals come in Saturday morning and depart during the run or immediately after the run and don't participate in the raffles or dinners and don't stay at the hotels.

Formula Owner has the option of staying here in Auburn with his daughter, if their schedules match up.  Otherwise he would need a hotel for the rerun, or as he indicated, he might not be able to make the rerun.  He's about 6 hours away.

Sorry. Can't make it. SWMBO has decided that she is doing a show that weekend. My presence is "requested".

I'm about 4 hrs away. If I DO make it, I'll spend the night with my daughter, and I'll likely part ways with the group after the Tail of the Dragon. Which would be a little disappointing, as my favorite driving road of the day was Hwy 28 from Hwy 74 to Franklin, NC (where the hotel was). Many of the roads on the run needed to be driven by: accelerating, braking, turning, accelerating, braking, turning, etc. This section of 28 allowed a lot of curvy fun without a lot of accelerating & braking. Mostly just back & forth a lot. I drove most of it in 3rd gear, and rarely shifted. For some reason, this road didn't bother my wife as much, either, so I was able to push it a little more, allowing me to keep pace with the group.

How do you do a leisurely run in 1 day, without hotel, but the fast run takes a hotel?
The difference in speed from "all out" to "leisurely" doesn't result in that much extra time. I had my wife with me on the run, so I dialed it back a bit, making me the slowest car in the group. But at the stops, I was usually only a couple of minutes behind. My pace was a bit higher than "leisurely", but my guess is that such a pace would add no more than 30 minutes of driving time to the day.

On the trial run Sarge departed the group and headed west on US 19/74, but you could still do 28 and head west on US 64 which merges with US 19/74 over around Andrews.  US 64 can take you all the way to Cleveland, Tn. at I-75.  or US 411 down toward Rome and Cartersville.

By leisurely, I meant that there would be no hurry to meet a deadline for lunch or dinner and we could rerun any part of it if wanted.  The driving part doesn't slow down very much.

So is this thing happening or not? Some of us need more planning than just getting up early and filling the tank.  ;)

BTW, I DID get a clutch system flush done. Nice, fresh fluid in there now.

Yes.  On the 27th.  Right now, confirmed is Jason in his new ride.  Jordan in the 85GT and Me.  Scott isn't sure.  Pat can't make it.  Dave is working.  Raydar has other commitments.  Roger can't make it.  Just invited HarryT to join us since he was out of state or country during the run.

To date, I have only me, Jason and Jordan going on the rerun.  Anyone else?  I need to set up our meeting place and print route sheets.

Bunches of people saw our Fieros, today.  Some spun around in their tracks as we passed.  One grabbed his camera and tried to get a shot as we passed.  One pulled into the rest stop and was photographing us as we were pulling away.  Folks at The Dragons Den gift shop swarmed Budgetman72's car then rolled in another GT with a 400HP SC engine.  More about all this in the RFTH 23 Rerun thread.

This thread?

Jason, Jordan, Lexus, Tegan and Charlie enjoyed themselves immensely.  Two new converts in the persons of Lexy and Tegan.

Periodic rain, pea soup on the Cherohala Skyway, and I almost got two bicyclists again.

The back mountain roads were heavily covered with leaves and in some places had dirt and gravel in the roadway.  No traffic holdups anywhere except the last half of Hwy 28 on the return portion.

As we were going up the Cherohala, I caught sight of a guy standing up high on an overlook that was trying to get his camera trained on us as we scooted by.  At mile marker 2, we stopped at an overlook that had restrooms.  As we were leaving, a truck pulled in, rolled down his window and was taking pictures of us as we were leaving.

As we worked our way around and through The Dragon, we stopped at the souvenir shop across from The Dragon's Den.  Next thing I knew the back end of Jason's GT had been mobbed.  There was also another guy there from Cleveland, TN with a 3800SC that he estimated to be near 400HP.  He said he was on The Dragon the same day we did our RFTH.  Knows CowsPatoot, too.

With the weather being what it was, I didn't expect Killboy to be out there, but I guess he heard we were coming so he bundled up in his rain gear and had his cameras ready.

When we left, traveling on Hwy 28, on the portion south of US 74, we passed a couple standing at an overlook.  The guy actually spun all the way around as he watched us pass.  They were in a Fiat Spider 124 Convertible.

Next thing I knew, he was right behind us.  This is the area where we were being held back by a couple of vehicles, but as soon as they cleared the roadway, we took off.  The Fiat joined in the chase, but the Spider just couldn't keep pace with the Pegasus's.  He would catch us on long straights but fall behind on the curves.  I know nothing about the Spider's capabilities but it sure made me feel good to see us leave him behind.

As we approached Franklin, we moved into a right turn lane I gave the Fiat a thumbs up as they passed.  The lady had a huge grin and appeared to break into a laugh.  Seems they enjoyed it, too.

Tegan and I left the house at 7:30 AM and got home at 8:15 PM.

Lexis?  I'm guessing that is one of Jason's kids?

Good show.

Is it possible to get double jealousy?

Sounds like a brilliant day out.

Brilliant day, but with all the rain, it wasn't a bright one.

Great!  Now we just need both girls to become active club members.

At our fuel stop on the way home, Jason said that the daughter was hooked.  It's really great to see a family enjoying things together.

I agree.  Usually, one of my kids rides with me.  Good time together.  I'm not sure if it's about the Fiero or not, though.

Tegan brought this home from school, yesterday.  She even put the wing on the yellow car, as she does whenever she draws a Fiero.  The friend she mentions is referring to Jason's daughter, Lexy.  Killboy caught us on pages 34 and 35 of the Sporty Car section.  October 27.

... I know nothing about the Spider's capabilities but it sure made me feel good to see us leave him behind.

They are actually based on the new "ND" Miata platform, introduced in 2016, except with Fiat's suspension tuning and drivetrain.
If you choose to believe the magazine articles, they are quite capable. Some even prefer them to the Miata.
Regardless... Good show!
