Can the fuel fill tube safely be painted? I do not want mine to deteriorate.
-
You could probably do the outside, but anything on the inside might not hold up to the gasoline and ethanol.
-
Yes. The outside. The inside shouldn't have rust.
-
Expecting that you'll be removing it from the car, spray it with high temp engine paint. Let it dry well then bake it in the oven at 250 for about a half hour. You shouldn't have any problems with rust after that.
-
Out of curiousity, what is the need for high-temp paint?
-
You can bake it and make it harder. The Ford Engine Red I use on intakes and valve covers is like a ceramic coating once it's baked. It withstands the elements much better than just regular paint.
-
Ah.
So, my concern with painting the fill tube is that maybe it's a bad idea. People always say do not paint the cast iron stack in your house. I don't remember why. Something about moving fluids.

I think they where painted black already at some factory before being shipped to, then assembled onto your car. Go ahead, paint it! I want to see the cuss words you invent to remove and replace it. Ralphie’s dad in “A Christmas Story” comes to mind. Been there, done that.

Nothing like a challenge.

It would seem that I could pull the rear clip, then replacement would not be that difficult.
-
It’s wormed into a welded body strut and jenga’d Through to where it popps out at the tank. You can get it without removing the rear clip. It just might take some thought and ingenuity. I did mine with the clip on. I can’t remember if it came out the wheel well or the bottom, though.

I don't like the fit of the rear clip. I need to get some pics and things with the clip off.

It makes sense, but do all Fieros have a ground strap on the fill tube?
