The 2019 Don Hulse Memorial Cruise is scheduled for April 13, 2019. This is the same date as our regularly scheduled meeting, but the cruise will take it's place. There will be no business meeting at The Galaxy Diner.
The Starting Point is The North Georgia Racing Museum and Dawsonville City Hall at approximately 9 AM. The Atlanta Motorsports Park was considered, but special arrangements must be made to have them open the gates for us at no charge.
We will wander up and down the Hills and through the Foothills of North Georgia, drive up to Brasstown Bald if you like, or stop outside Helen and see the celebrated White Bat, and most of all, just have a good day together. Though this is a cruise, there are ample roads for you to exercise your suspension if you desire.
This isn't a cruise intended exclusively for Fieros. Everyone is welcome. Invite your friends to come along. There are no entry fees, but Donations for our 2019 Charity, The American Cancer Society, would be greatly appreciated.
Our final destination will be The Smith House in Dahlonega. All you can eat Country Cookin'. When the platter is empty, they'll bring more, so there's no need to fight over that last biscuit or chicken leg. Seating is at old style long tables, so lots of folks to jibber-jabber with, as long as you remember to not talk with your mouth full.
Now, you've all been given ample time to get this on your schedule. No excuses. Let's see if we can have a little more club spirit and participation than we have had in 2018.
-
Out of curiosity, why the day of the normal meeting?
-
We should have more success in getting people to come out for the one gathering as opposed to one for the meeting and one for the cruise.
-
Just hoping no one shows up at the diner, expecting a meeting, or at least some Fiero people.
-
Some people don't read the message board, so there might be some. They have 4 months to at least read the board once and know about the change in activity.
-
Even regular readers miss topics.
I'm not trying to start anything. I don't have a solution, and agree that this may achieve the desired result, as fas as cruise attendance.
-
Maybe we can have Maria put a sign on the door -- "Fiero club meeting is not here today..., etc.".
-
At that point, it's already too late. They're at The Diner and we're between Dawsonville and Dahlonega.
-
I like TopNotch's idea. It may be too late, but at least they aren't waiting for people not to show up.
-
Do you look at the Augusta school calendar and say, "AH! Spring Break is that week. Perfect time for a cruise." ?????
Have fun.
-
I suspect that the people at the meeting did not have school-age children.
Actually, that didn't occur to me, either.
-
Yup, I think I'm a statistical outlier in this group.
Has school age kids.
Only owns one Fiero.
Over six feet tall.
Don't live near Atlanta.
-
I'm not over 6 feet tall, otherwise, I'm in your group. Fierofool and MikeMac are over 6 feet tall. TopNotch may be shorter, but should be close.
-
TopNotch may be shorter, but should be close.
I'm only 5'7". I Used to be taller, but I shrunk with old age.
-
Do you look at the Augusta school calendar and say, "AH! Spring Break is that week. Perfect time for a cruise." ?????
Have fun.
Yes. Spring Break. No soccer games, no school, the teenagers can take care of themselves. Time to go for a 1 day cruise. Bring a kid. Bring the whole family. What won't fit in a Fiero can fit in the Soccer Van, Ballet Bus, or Mustang Convertible.
-
More likely we'll be traveling.
-
At the February meeting Pat suggested looking at the Yahoola Creek Restaurant as an alternate choice for lunch. This was because some had an unsatisfactory experience at The Smith House. At that time I forgot that I had indicated The Smith House as our destination in every place where I had issued an invitation. GrassRoots Motorsports, Southeast Solstice and Skye Club, Neighbor.Com, and Facebook.
-
They are 2 miles apart, according to the map. Maybe you could send an updated invite, then post someone to redirect a few people.
-
Any decisions on the destination?
-
I'm not going to change the destination. I don't know how widely the information has been distributed through the groups I've invited. If I change it, corrections may not get passed along. If anyone doesn't want to eat at The Smith House, there are several other places close by, including Yahoola and some fast food restaurants. They will still enjoy the casual ride.
-
In theory, everyone should finish about the same time. If you wait a bit and left everyone congregate in the parking lot, people could decide where they want to go.
-
It might be a good idea to put this on the home page, to advise any visitors that there will not be the regular meeting at the Diner.
-
Has the starting point been finalized to The North Georgia Racing Museum and Dawsonville City Hall? Are these the same location?
-
Yes. Starting point is the Dawsonville City Hall/Georgia Racing Museum in Dawsonville, Ga.
-
Yes, Dawsonville City Hall is in the same building as the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame..... its a long story, but there is some small town politics involved
-
We will be doing a trial run on Saturday, March 16. We will be departing Dawsonville City Hall not later than 10. Because this is a trial run, arrive at City Hall around 9-9:30. We will wait on all who let us know they're going.
-
Anyone going besides me, Scott and Pat? Supposed to be a sunny day about 60*.
-
I might not be able to make it tjis weekend, work has been a "bit" busy this week (I had over 40 when I clocked in this morning.) Still havent got a new battery. Will let you know for sure tomorrow afternoon.
-
Might want to post this on Pennock's.
-
And....... I wont be able to make it tomorrow, mud is too deep to get my car out the building. Yall have fun
-
For those who are going, take PICTURES! LOL!
-
As far as I know, it's just me and Pat. I'm planning to take a camera.
-
Have fun!
-
So, all set for the 13th?
-
I think so. Couple of turns in the early part sneak up on you. Top a hill and immediately have to make a right or left turn onto another road.
We stopped to see the White Bat but they no longer have it. Also went up Brasstown Bald. The kind lady at the gate let us go in to take some pictures without paying the parking fee.
This is far as you can go in your personal vehicle. They have shuttle buses from the building. There's a huge parking lot behind me. Some people take the walking trail to the top.

Pat has a much closer shot of the observation tower.

Headwaters of the Chattahoochee River. One of the many rivers, lakes or streams along our way.

Atlanta is somewhere beyond the horizon.

-
Along the Richard B. Russell Parkway.

And it was 60* in Atlanta?

Across the road from the ice bluffs, looking Northeast on the Richard B. Russell Parkway.
-
Is that a walking bridge across the stream?
I thought of getting a good pic of the Atlanta skyline, but did not have time or a good place to stop.
-
Yes, it is. If you look at the pole with the green padding on it, then look upward you can see two of the rings are pulled behind the tree. There was a young man, pre-teen, maybe, that was coming back. The lady down below was taking pics of him as he progressed on the hand rings.
-
Those bridges always fall when I get on them. Fortunately, that one isn't high, and the stream isn't deep. You could walk across. During the dry season, you could certainly step across.
-
We stopped to see the White Bat but they no longer have it. Also went up Brasstown Bald. The kind lady at the gate let us go in to take some pictures without paying the parking fee.
Maybe the bat died.
-
More likely that termites ate it. It was a bait and switch thing. A baseball bat painted white and placed in a glass top display case.
-
There are actually two bridges there. The course takes you across one and back on the other. The water level is close to normal. It's a trout stream and during season, you can see anglers all along its path.
-
"Course"?
-
For those of you not familiar with Georgia, Brasstown Bald is the tallest mountain in Georgia. At the top is a museum and forest fire lookout tower. As Fierofool said, I have a closer picture of the tower (new camera w with long zoom). This is from the parking lot (see Fierofool's first picture).

-
Can you hold the camera that still, or did you have to use a tripod?
-
Can you hold the camera stat still, or did you have to use a tripod?
Actually, a third choice: The camera has built-in image stabilization.
-
Impressive!
-
GTRS, this was an obstacle course. You can see some of the various things in the picture. There's a small store and ticket office off to the left of the picture, at the entrance to a number of camping areas and cabins.
There are lots of little cabins, camping areas and RV areas along the river and close by. Helen, Ga. is an Alpine-themed town in North Georgia and it attracts lots of people.
-
More pictures of the obstacle course and zip lines...

-
See the little peak in the distance on the right side of this picture?

Here is the peak close up. Is the white stuff snow?

-
Looks like bare ground, to me.
-
A few seconds of hand-held video from the trial run...
-
The video looked like we were going pretty fast, but during the whole day, we never got over the speed limit, except for one short burst.
That mountain face may be granite and the shiny stuff cold be ice from frozen water runoff.
-
Here's another view of our cars on Richard Russel.

Here's another view of the ice.

-
Might want to post this on Pennock's.

But I think "Events" would have been a better/additional topic: http://www.fiero.nl/cgi-bin/fiero/forumdisplay.cgi?action=topics&forum=Events&number=7&LastLogin= (http://www.fiero.nl/cgi-bin/fiero/forumdisplay.cgi?action=topics&forum=Events&number=7&LastLogin=)
-
At the risk of cross-posting. People rarely look in the Events board.
-
Did we pick a charity for this year?
-
The cruise charity recipient will be The American Cancer Society.
-
Thanks.
-
You may want to update the first post.
-
So, who's going?
-
I plan to be there. I really need to know how many route sheets to print. No way of knowing how many might come from the other sites where I've posted and made invitations but a headcount from our peeps would be greatly appreciated.
-
I'm planning on it.
-
Maybe Mike can go?
-
Scott said he is planning to go but he said Mike is going to be out of town that weekend.
GTRXVette, you can drive one of my cars if you will go along.
-
I was hoping the Aerodon Fiero could lead the way.
-
yep, planning to be there. It will be nice to get my car out after sitting for months with a bad battery
-
3 takers, so far. Anyone else?
-
I have a loaner car if anyone wants to use it. Hey NoMad and Cat. Want to borrow my spare? V6 5-speed.
-
The weather report I saw claims warm, mostly sunny, with 0% chance of precipitation.
-
Wish we could. We are both working our respective jobs on the 13th. Neither could swing it.
-
The weather report I saw claims warm, mostly sunny, with 0% chance of precipitation.
Hmmm. As I watched the report yesterday, the forecast changed to mostly cloudy, and the chance of precipitation rose to 10%, then 20%.
-
No rain next Saturday. Rain or shine cruise anyway.
-
Looks like the possibility of being back down to just 2 club members. I haven't heard anything from any of the other invitees.
-
Planning on it, barring anything unforeseen.
-
I count four:
Fierofool
TopNotch
Scottb
Raydar
-
Sorry. My bad math. Maybe 3.
-
Sorry. My bad math. Maybe 3.
Which of the 4 above isn't going?
-
Scott has been working some very long hours. Depends upon his work schedule and stamina.
I'm still offering one of my cars for anyone who would like to go.
-
Anyone else considering doing the cruise?
-
I'm hearing some not-so-good things about the weather. Being that we only have (maybe) 3-4 cars, should we consider a reschedule? (Tammy is even considering participating, in her Miata. But she ain't gonna do it in the rain.)
Thoughts?
-
Thoughts:
1. Hungry for BBQ
2. Everyone who was invited would need to be notified ASAP
3. If the event is cancelled, perhaps Maria would still be willing to have the meeting at the Diner
4. If there is a meeting this Saturday, everyone should bring a picture of their favorite club activity, and share the picture and the story with the other attendees
5. Still hungry
-

There is this.
-
It is not looking good for me, I may have to work Saturday. Will keep yall informed as to my status
-
As of the 10 PM news, the forecast is for a 20% chance of rain on Saturday.
-
Be sure to take pictures. The weather is looking good, here.
-
The weather was good. The roads were good. You guys should have been there.
Anyhow the three musketeers Fiero-teers were there. Here's some pictures...

We had lunch at the Smith House

The gold mine shaft in the Smith House

-
How was the food?
-
How was the food?
Good.
-
Did Tammy drive her Miata?
-
What is that hole?
-
That is the opening to the gold mine shaft.
Dahlonega is the site of the second gold rush in the United States. However, it was much more significant than the first one which occurred in North Carolina, according to Wikipedia.
-
That gold rush contributed to one of the sadder chapters of Georgia history -- the expulsion of the Cherokees on the "trail of tears".
-
I had ancestors in that march.
-
Did Tammy drive her Miata?
Nah. She thought it was going to rain (as did I) so she begged off.
-
Well, she missed out, it seems.
-
I guess you can un-pin this topic.
-
I've been thinking about this event, but in the larger sense, all events. In many ways, each event is a party. Time is spent on planning. People are invited. No people, no party. Sorry I couldn't make it.
-
It would be great to have this cruise, with the AeroDon Fiero leading.
-
We have attempted 4 Don Hulse Memorial Cruises. The first was to Cumberland Island for Don because he had never been to the Georgia coast. Only Don and I went and my brother rode with me. The second was up in the mountains. Only Pat and I went. The third, Pat, Steve and I were the only ones. There was one other that no one said they were going, so I cancelled.
-
That was very sad.
-
It may have been my fault. Just looking at my weekends, every third Friday of the month is the board meeting, so I can't go anywhere. One Saturday every other month, my kids have an activity, plus 2 Saturdays per month. The second weekend in January, second and fourth weekends in February, first and second weekends in March, first and second weekends in April, third weekend in May, second weekend in June, first weekend in July, first weekend in November, second weekend in December, I'm already booked. That is just my calendar. My wife's calendar has more stuff.
-
What happened to the Aerodon Fiero?
-
MikeMac bought it from Darrell, replaced the trans, and did some other needed repairs. Still has it, AFAIK.
-
It's up for sale. He wanted someone in the club to buy it, but I've not seen it listed anywhere.
-
It's up for sale. He wanted someone in the club to buy it, but I've not seen it listed anywhere.
I had told him I might be interested in it. I asked him for a price. He said, "we could discuss it".
That was the last I heard. Figured he was busy or something.
-
I'd also like someone in the club to buy it. It wouldn't be special to anyone else.
