Title: Warmed-over 2.8, over 200 HP???
Post by: GTRS Fiero on July 30, 2019, 08:34:29 pm
I'm not sure what warmed-over means, but I had a fellow Fiero owner claim 200 crank HP on a 2.8.  No turbo, supercharger, etc.  Not bored or stroked.  200 HP seems unlikely, since my 3.4 does not get 200 HP at the crank.

How is 200 HP possible on a naturally-aspirated 2.8?

What does warmed-over mean?

He was spiking the fuel with CBD oil laced with THC.  The engine was hallucinating.  Or maybe it was him.

Next thing would be a 150 shot of Nitrous, but that would only be good just once.

Um, CBD?

I thought THC was a depressant.

In theory, if the cam, pistons, and heads were modified, the intake and exhaust opened up, the ignition modified, the accessories removed, light oil used, and the runners modified, probably 170 HP is possible.  Since he is using the throttle body, rather than a carb, nothing was helping, there.

THC may be a depressant but isn't it a hallucinogenic, too?  Pipe Dream.  Not really sure what CBD does except it seems to be good for a lot of ailments.  Never tried either so I have no knowledge of them.

Never tried them, either, but never heard of them being hallucinogenic.  Just like alcohol, addicts seems to get delusions, but that's a different thing.

Anyway, a 3.4 can supposedly be made to get 200 HP at the crank.  I think it only has bore and stroke over a 2.8.  The 2.9 turbo seems to beat that 200 HP.

If I had the funds, I know someone who could do it, if it could be done.

My wife had tried CBD oil for arthritis pain. She never said whether it helped or not, but I once tried some of hers for back pain. It had absolutely no effect at all. And it tasted bad.
I think for some people, things like that have a psychosomatic effect. Medications only work on me if they actually work.
And in any case, the guy with the 200 HP 2.8 probably had a 200 HP imagination.

Well, the fact remains that his 2.8 is faster than my 3.4.  My 3.4 is no slouch (compared to a stock 2.8 ), but does run through an automatic.  I wasn't railing on my 3.4, but I gave it a good run.

If I was to make a guess, my 3.4 is probably in the 180's.

I wish I could find the magazine that had an article about building a 2.8 to make rated HP at the rear wheels. I read it back in the 80's when the Fiero was still being built. Anyway, the engine was pulled and I believe that the heads were re-worked, a new cam was installed, a bump in compression, bigger injectors and bored throttle body, and balanced crank were what was done to the engine. Stock displacement was kept. The result was 135-140 hp at the rear wheel. As I cant find this article or even the magazine, I cannot confirm this. I do know that this was done before the 3.4 were available . Today, its more cost effective to buy a 3.4, rebuild it and dress it as a 2.8 to get more power.

In one of the GM V6 books, it was claimed that purpose built 2.8 race motors were making in excess of 200 HP. (I forget the exact figure), but that was with ported heads, "tall" individual runner intake manifolds, huge carburetors, and headers. The "warmed over" 2.8 probably has a stroker crank, effectively making it a 3.1, at least.

I have to wonder how long those race motors lasted.

The pictures they showed were of "Baja-type" offroad racers. That can be pretty grueling.

What does warmed-over actually mean?

I thought it meant changing to a performance cam, giving it a bore-and -stroke job, and advancing the timing.

Maybe he warmed it over too much.  It...caught fire.  Electrical short met fuel leak.  The engine is toast.  The Fiero is still OK.  The fire appears to have burned a hole in the block, like someone took a torch to that side of the block.
