How do you get the plugs out holding the interior plastic skeleton under the center console?
There are two on each side of the transmission and look like they should come out with a tree puller -- but they don't.

It's been so long since I removed or replaced a skeleton that I don't remember. Do the plugs hold the skeleton to the tunnel? If they don't, you could remove the skeleton as a whole unit then access the plugs from the backside. Maybe the tips could be squeezed with a pair of needlenose pliers to allow them to release.
I did a google search and found where one skeleton had been disassembled. The tip of one of the plugs was laying on the work surface. It appeared they had taken a pair of side cutters and snipped off the tip, likely replacing it with a new Christmas tree button.

If I remember correctly, those hold on some sort of support for the carpet......also, the cruise control module (if equipped) is attached to the drivers side. once the evil clips holding the carpet are removed those flaps come out with the skeleton. no need to clip those fasteners

The interior tunnel between the driver and passenger seat.

Evil clips removed but the skeleton didn't want to slide out.
Guess I need to disconnect the cruise.

I didn't have to deal with the cruise when I replaced the skeletons in my 86 and 87. Inspect carefully to be sure there's not something else holding it. It was a little difficult to maneuver out and in.

Passenger side came right off the way it should. Only the driver side was a pain.
Now to figure out how to put all this stuff back together...

Sacrificed some Christmas Tree plugs...

I removed a skeleton from a pull-a-part car years ago to use in my Yellow Fiero, but I honestly don't remember it being too difficult to remove. The original skeleton in the yellow car was a real mess.

Plastificial sacrifice...not sure that counts.
