Title: Timing Cover Clamp
Post by: Fierofool on May 03, 2020, 06:42:04 pm
Does anyone have the timing cover hold down clamp that's needed when changing out the water pump on the V6 engine?  Need to borrow one by the time of the May club meeting.

Thank you, Pat.  I bought it is why it's sold out.

Just for anyone who might later do a search for one, tag  timing cover clamp  KD Tools 3199  may help.  It looks like that was a regular production item for them in the day.  Looks much sturdier than the ones that come with some of the water pumps.

I bought one from another seller as a "just in case".

I'll put mine in the Tools For Loan when I'm finished so others can use it, too.  It was suggested that I purchase a water pump, use the clamp then return everything for credit.  I couldn't find any water pumps that come with the clamp, any more.

A few pictures does not seem a lot to ask.  I have made two 20-hour (driving time) trips there.  I'm not just around the corner.

I will bring my full kit and shoot photos of the events and any specifics you might ask for. Just shoot me a list.

It's difficult for me to remember to take pictures when I'm involved.  I would have to set out to do a photodocumentary to be successful.

Yep, that happened with me, too.  My wife had to remind me, if you recall.  MikeMac thought that was funny.

Anytime I see a post with a lot of pictures I just imagine GTRS Fiero seeing all those pictures and reacting like the first part of this:

For some reason the video starts at 4 seconds, you have to rewind it to zero to get the full effect.

LOL

How about a scan of the drawing on the blister pack. Mine was kind of worn, and the drawing is only 2" high, but I managed to get this:

That is very interesting.  Not a Fiero, obviously.  The purpose of the picture is to show usage in a Fiero.

The angle of the bolt in the bracket is interesting.

Thanks for the effort, though.

It could be on a 3.1 or 3.4.  Works for all 3.  I can see the bolt being at some slight angle as the clamp is tightened down.

Perhaps the clamp was added as a hand drawing to an existing engine drawing, and whoever drew it didn't get the angle correct.

Excellent.  It looks as if it still had to be modified.  Also, it appears that the CTS would have had to be removed.

Post by: Fierofool on May 09, 2020, 10:13:45 pm
You are correct on both.  I tried to install it but the CTS was in the way.  I removed it and the bolt was at an angle to the hole, so I had to grind off an area to get it to clear the ridge on the timing cover.  Once that was done, it worked perfectly.

I wonder if it would have to be modified on a 2.8 (which this engine isn't).

Just the area closest to the clamp bolt, it appears.

If the bolt hole is in a slightly difference place on a 2.8, the mod may not be needed.

Perhaps, but it wouldn't get much of a bite on the timing cover.  Moving the bolt hole along the length of the clamp does not allow space for that hump.  Moving the hole closer to the lower edge would only put a corner on the timing cover.

The timing cover came from an early 2.8.  The block bolts are identical to a 2.8.  So, yes, I believe it would need to be modified.

LOL

It starts at 4 seconds, because of the "time_continue=4" parameter.
