UPDATE: AS OF AUGUST 18, EVERYTHING IS STILL A GO. THE RESTAURANTS CAN STILL SEAT US AND THE HOTELS CAN ACCOMMODATE US.
The 25th Annual Run For The Hills is planned to take place on September 25 thru 27th, 2020. By requests, we have moved the event from the traditional 3rd weekend to the 4th weekend of September.
The event may be rescheduled to a later date if conditions warrant but in the meantime, all usual planning for restaurants and hotels is moving forward.
The event will begin in Dawsonville, Ga. We will travel through such well-known roads as Hwy 60, Suches road, Cherohala Skyway, NC Hwy 28, Fontana Road, Tail of The Dragon, and the Foothills Parkway and Little River Gorge Road to arrive in Gatlinburg, Tn for some rest and good food before returning home. Some may want to visit nearby Pigeon Forge and Dollywood if your schedule will permit. The Cherokee Reservation and Casino is also a short drive south of Gatlinburg.
If you feel that you cannot make the September event and still would like to get a little taste of what it's going to be, you're welcome to join us on June 20 as we do a trial run. We will depart the McDonalds in Dawsonville at 9AM.
Ask for Georgia Fiero Club rates when booking. September 4 cutoff and cancellation date.

I'm curious about that free breakfast. Is that current?
-
Yes, it's current. My daughter and son in law have been going to Edgewater Inn for years. They had it then and when we stayed there during RFTH, they had a pretty darned good breakfast. Eggs, sausage, bacon, toast, bagles, danish, gravy, biscuits, juices, cereals, coffee, waffles and syrup and I don't remember what else.
-
I meant since COVID. Many hotels dropped their free breakfast.
-
Do I have to stay in the Dawsonville Quality Inn?
-
I've talked with the people up there, both at the hotel and at Calhoun's BBQ. Most places are operating under normal conditions, except that restaurants are restricted to seating a maximum of 10 persons at a table. The tables in the Edgewater dining area only seat 4-6 as I remember. The area is about 400 sq ft. Deduct the counter space and you couldn't seat 20 people.
Things could change by event time. For now, it's full speed ahead and we'll make the final decision by September 4.
-
Excellent!
-
Do I have to stay in the Dawsonville Quality Inn?
I thought you had reservations at Brown's Bed and Breakfast?
-
That place makes you fix your own breakfast, and clean up afterward. You also have to provide your own food.
-
Will there be a charity, this year?
Sorry, I may be a bit previous with this question.
-
That place makes you fix your own breakfast, and clean up afterward. You also have to provide your own food.
He said it was worth it. When he stays overnight, he gets to sleep with the owner.

SHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!! hush!
-
He also gets to rehab the bathroom, IIRC.
So....all good with the route?
-
Sorry, Michael. I missed your question about the route.
I had to rework the route. It wouldn't have allowed us to get into Gatlinburg in time to check into our hotel, then get over to the restaurant in a reasonable time. Downtown Gatlinburg isn't that big and with the bus stop directly in front of the hotel and the restaurant, it only takes 10-15 minutes between. Figure an hour to get checked in, arriving at the hotel around 7PM would be a problem. I had to cut out a good section of the route. We may also depart Dawsonville a little earlier than we have traditionally done.
But after reworking, my calculations will allow us just a little leeway in our fuel and bathroom and lunch stops.
-
BTW, thanks for doing the planning on this.
-
I had help and good input from Scott, Pat, and Jason.
-
Thanks to everyone who worked on this.
-
People need to start ordering their Tshirts. We have money invested in the artwork and we need to recover that cost. So far, I only have one shirt on order and I have to place my order, plus 1 I'm giving to someone. Profit from 3 shirts won't pay for the atwork.
Even if you don't plan to go on the run, having one and wearing it at Caffeine and Octane and other car events would be good advertising for the event and the club.
-
Thanks for the reminder. I meant to do that, this month.
-
Any idea how many rooms are booked?
-
I haven't checked. I'll do that when I book my rooms.
-
Any idea how many rooms are booked?
At the present time, I am the only one who has booked a room at either hotel.
-
Hmmm. Which club members are going?
-
Planning to. Possibly whole family. Need to work out details.
-
Awesome!
-
I'm planning to go. My older brother has told me he won't be able to to this year. I haven't heard from my younger brother, but I don't expect him to go either.
-
I'm planning on going this year. If I go, I'll show up Saturday morning be at home that night. My Fiero has had some running issues, so I guess I better get that figured out soon. Thanks for making this happen again!
-
Glad to have you attend.
-
OK, everyone. We got a notice from Edgewater Inn in Gatlinburg that only 2 of the 15 rooms have been taken. Mine and one other. You can make the reservation and they will refund the money if the event is cancelled or it ends up you can't make it for some reason.
-
UPDATE: AS OF AUGUST 18, EVERYTHING IS STILL A GO. THE RESTAURANTS CAN STILL SEAT US AND THE HOTELS CAN ACCOMMODATE US.
-
Unless there is a major relaxation at work, I will not be able to attend.
My wife is on a leash regarding how far she can be from her office -- one of the joys of working for the government. RFTH wouldn't be as much fun without my co-pilot & navigator.

Excellent news!
-
A note from the Gatlinburg hotel, this morning: Only 2 of the rooms have been taken. I will assume that will be about the same for the Dawsonville hotel.
-
I will be flying solo this year, anyone want to split a room?
-
I'll split either or both with you.
-
That September 4th deadline is rapidly approaching.
-
Charlie, as long as you don't snore too badly I will split a room with you.
-
Rumor has it that Charlie snores very well, so you should be fine.
-
I've been told that I tend to get a bit gassy while sleeping, so we should be even ;)
-
My comment was a small joke.
-
Planning on attending but timing is still up in the air. That whole week is vintage boat camping event in Tennessee. Current tentative plan is Im going to pull boat up there with wagon and one kid on monday and Michelle will drive my Formula up later in week with other kid. I will probably then drive to dawsonville in morning with one kid to be ready to run and then back to campsite after run. Campsite is 2 hrs from end of run, so doable. Need to figure if this will a totally work. One kid has week off for break other has school......
-
My comment was a small joke.
Mine was a big joke
-
What is the start time and finish ETA? Hudson wants to come for the run but I'm not sure how long he can handle. Charlie, can you send me a copy of the route? Thinking now that staying at the hotel the first night would be better.
-
You have to check with Charlie..... I believe the plan is to leave Dville at 9 and be in Gatlinburg at 4
-
Scott, I don't snore. You should be fine.
Larry, we usually hold the driver's meeting about 8AM and are on the road by 9AM. I expect us to arrive in Tellico Plains, Tn for lunch around 11:30-12 noon then into Gatlinburg around 5-5:30. I've planned our Saturday Dinner to take place about 7PM.
If you'll be camping 2 hours away from Gatlinburg, I'm guessing you are in the Knoxville or Norris Lake area?
-
Ill be in Spring City in the Watts Bar Lake area of the Tennessee river. Tellico is a 1 hour drive from there rather than back tracking 3 hours all the way to Dawsonville. I may just cut out the AM and meet everyone for lunch and then complete the rest of the run into Gattlinburg, if that is acceptable with the group. That will shorten up the total time so Hudson can enjoy himself as well. I do not want to miss out but have too much on my plate as usual and trying to do two things on the same weekend is probably silly but you only live once and I really want to do both.
-
Will you then cut out after dinner, back to Spring City?
-
Yeah, you can run 68 down to Tellico Plains, do the real exciting part of the run with us then take 321 back from Gatlinburg.
-
I do not want to miss out but have too much on my plate as usual and trying to do two things on the same weekend is probably silly but you only live once and I really want to do both.
Multiplicity.

Good movie...... and one of us is showing our age
-
Hmmm. I am as old as my tongue, and slightly older than my teeth.
-
Support your club. Get your RFTH 25 Tshirts ordered. Friday is the last day to order.
-
The hotels and restaurants are telling me they are open for business, so at this point, I'd say that RFTH 25 is a GO. I don't expect it to be canceled. This Friday, Sept. 4 is the last day to make your reservations at our group rates.
-
Excellent news!
-
I have checked with the host hotels in Dawsonville and Gatlinburg. Both tell me there have been only 5 rooms at either hotel reserved under the club's discounted rates.
A reminder that this Friday, September 4 is the cutoff date for the discount rates.
-
Okay...Ordered my shirts. Booked my room in Gatlinburg. No problem.
Trying to book my room in Dawsonville. Been trying for almost an hour, now. I keep getting hung up on. ("Can you hold?" "Sure" *CLICK* Call is dropped. Really getting pissed... Happened twice, now.) Great way to earn future business. >:(
Edit- As of this moment I have eight calls to 706-216-1900. First one was at 10:27. "Can you call back? We're doing a shift change...?"
2nd Edit - Got through... "You'll need to hold. I'm checking someone in." ...and disconnected, I'm beyond pissed. One more try...
3rd Edit - Finally got to talk with someone who didn't hang up on me. Got the club rate after mentioning Charlie's name. Before that, she couldn't find the club. Lovely.
Anyway... I'm all signed up. See y'all there. In spite of the folks in Dawsonville's best efforts. :D
-
Well, yesterday was the cutoff for shirts and hotel reservations, I believe.
-
Sorry you had so much problem. I was the first to reserve a room at both hotels and I called late in the evening. The girl in Dawsonville couldn't find any rooms blocked out for us. Gatlinburg wasn't a problem.
I called back the next morning and the manager answered. She's the one that set up the rooms for us. She was already aware of my call the night before. The girl was new and didn't know how to find the group blocks. She had left a note detailing my call.
Midnight was the cutoff, but both hotels said that if they still had rooms, they would honor the rates as long as there were rooms available. I can still get Tshirts, too. Yesterday I picked up everything that had already been ordered and will be bringing some of them to Caffeine and Octane tomorrow.
Because there is some lag time between the time shirts are ordered and I get the PayPal notice, I like to give lots of time for the printer. Sometimes they have big orders and my orders are delayed for a bit.
-
I just talked with Kathy, the manager at Dawsonville. There are still 7 rooms remaining in our block and she will honor our rates until at least September 7. After that, she has to release them for the area fall festivals.
-
Thanks Charlie. I appreciate all you do.
-
I got my rooms yesterday. I had no problems with either hotel.
-
I think they put the new people on the night shift maybe because it's not as hectic during those hours.
-
Glad everyone is getting in on this event.
-
Can a wayward Fiero owner still get in on this? I just got my car back from the shop. I now have glorious air conditioning!!! Hope all are doing well.-russ
-
Always welcome! I recommend that you book your rooms ASAP.
Dunno if shirts are still possible, before the event.
-
Come on over/down. You can try to get the club rates, but there's no guarantee. At Dawsonville, call during the day and ask for Kathy. I don't have a front desk contact at Edgewater in Gatlinburg. The only one there is the corporate group rate rep I dealt with and she doesn't do actual reservations.
If you want a Tshirt, I can get any year at any time. It will be a little more if I have to mail it. Usually about $3.50 per shirt. That was last year's postage but I don't know what it is this year.
-
OK, everyone, this is supposed to be a nice weekend, though Sunday might be a bit chilly in the Atlanta arrea. It's the last opportunity to get that car fine' tuned and safety checked for next weekend. Start getting things into the car like your tool kit, fire extinguisher, spare parts and fluids. Throw in a roll or two of TP for the roadside restrooms. Maybe a mask or two and some hand sanitizer for when you handle that gas pump nozzle. You might think Covid-19 is no big deal, but you never know when you might contract Ebola from something you touch. Toss in a folding chair for sitting around and socializing Friday night.
Right now, the extended forecast is looking like a good weekend. The Gatlinburg conditions are 8-10% chance of rain with highs about 80* and lows in the mid 50's. Dawsonville, our starting point is forecast for less than 10% chance of showers Friday morning with temps ranging from about 77* to a low around 58*.
Those coming from the more southern points might want to throw in a light jacket or sweater while those from further north might elect to just wear their fishnet shirts.
-
Started checking mine over today: oil changed, fluids checked, ball joints greased, etc. Found a tire with cords showing, missing ball joint grease fitting. Called my tire guy and 2 tires on order, obviously needs aligned too. Anyone have a digital copy of the alignment TSB?
-
Yep! I'll email it to you as soon as I change computers.
-
Thank you Sir
-
You should have it in your mailbox.
-
Saw it before I said thanks

It's also in the May 2019 newsletter.
-
Changed my oil and checked all fluids. GTG. See you all this Friday! I would like a XXL t-shirt as well. Hope I can get a room tomorrow!
-
I don't know if I can get your shirt in time for the run. Place your order through the club merchandise. If I have to mail it, there will be an extra postage charge above the cost of the shirt.

That's 11 people. There may be others who didn't post their intentions. If I missed any, I apologize. I know whiteandnerdy showed up, one year. I'm hoping there are some other surprise attendees. It's be nice to get a few people from the Northeast, and some from further West.
I didn't see anything from Budgetman, Roger, ron768, DeShoe, Mike_21, and NoMad. Hmmm. CowsPatoot? I couldn't swear to it, but I thought there was something from him, somewhere. Montegut? Formula Owner? There are some new people we would love to have be able to attend.

TAD = The Art Doctor
Oldjoedad mentioned an LS4/F40 swap. Maybe mistakenly, but I had figured he was bringing it.
Yes, NTJoe is in Kentucky.
19! That's great!
-
The LS4/F40 might be Bob's. I know Brian towed a Fiero down when he took Bob home. I was expecting Bob to drive the Mini since he had sold the blue one.
-
Ron768 didn't know, yet but it won't be in a Fiero if he does. Probably the Mazda 3.
-
I won't be at the hotel on Friday, I have a birthday dinner that I must attend
-
CowsPatoot won't be here, unfortunately. Had too much stuff to do (and not enough time) to get his car ready.
-
This is setting up to be a great RFTH!
-
Dang! I have to print more route sheets and registration forms. I only printed out 20.
-
I hope you need twice that number.
-
There may be another. HTJoe is meeting someone from LaGrange and they will both be there. Don't know if they are riding together or driving seperate vehicles. Likely each will be driving due to logistics of returning to the vehicle left behind.
-
I show LaGrange, GA over by Raydar. That'd be way out of the way for someone coming from Kentucky.
The more, the merrier.
-
cars is getting there: 2 new tires purchased and installed, new fuel filter installed, and a new air filter was ordered and picked up today. Still on the list is checking the brake slide pins, check the plugs, am alignment (to the TSB specs) and give it a bath
-
Glad to read that.
-
If anybody needs a roommate in Gatlinburg, let me know!
-
I show LaGrange, GA over by Raydar.
LaGrange is about 20 minutes south of me.
I'm a little bit closer to Carrollton, just inside Heard County, if you've got your map program open.
-
Sadly I won't be making it. Neither car is ready and my knee and now shoulder/neck wouldn't make it.

Sounds like this will be a great event! Everyone be safe and post LOTS of pictures.

Can't wait to see the pictures.

Sadly no. I got a fix it or get evicted for the Vette so all free time is currently invested there so I don't have to move again before finding a permanent spot.
Sorry to read that. No ride-along?
-
Geez. When it rains, it pours.
Been there. Good luck.

The SE, I dont trust the Formula yet

For everyone arriving on Friday, don't let the weather dampen your enthusiasm. The current forecast is for about an 80% chance of rain for Friday only. Saturday forecast, the day of the actual event, is 81* and sunny.
-
Where are you finding the weather info?
-
Lacal tv stations.
-
Local, huh? I was looking for hourly forecasts.
-
Just an FYI- Unfortunately, due to a personal medical issue(not Covid 19), I'll be unable to join you this year. I hope all of you have a safe and fun run tomorrow!
-
Well, I'm out. Broke down north of Columbia. Waiting for tow now. Dang.
-
What happened?

I'm also curious what happened, but do you need anything?
-
I'm already in Tennessee it rained all day Thursday but cleared nicely by 3 on Friday. Saturday looks to be sunny and dry. See everyone for lunch on Saturday.
-
Hopefully, everyone attending either has arrived, or will soon arrive. I know, some people live a few minutes away from the start point, so won't show up until tomorrow.
-
Tomorrow, before the run, everyone should check if their alternator is plugged in.
-

I think that only applies to Charlie.......... :P
-
I thought I'd get a reaction on that one.
Note that I suggested waiting until tomorrow to check. I'd still like to know how that came unplugged.
-

I'm going out tonight and unplug a few so I'm not the only one in the battery swap club.
-
Yeah, no one with whom to swap. :D
-
Have fun.
Take pictures!
-
What happened?
Well, i started off just before noon. Noticed a small stumble in the RPMs in the first 10 miles of driving. Which concerned me as the car has been extremely reliable and trouble free other than having to replace a clutch. The stumble went away and I thought it might have been my imagination. I'm about 80 miles into the trip when the stumble comes back and I now know it's not my imagination. I drive for a few more miles and it doesn't go away and I'm looking for an exit. I get off exit and the car stalls at the light. It turns over and starts, but then the motor immediately dies. I roll the car onto the should and wait for 10 minutes contemplating my next move. I try starting it again and it does and holds revs. But it sounds terrible. Nothing grinding but more like timing or a spark plug missing kinda noise (I'm not a mechanic by trade so forgive me on my descriptions). I get to a gas station, use the bathroom and wait about 20 minutes. Start the car again, and it starts right up and is purring. I decide to head back home at this point. I get about 20 miles closer to home and the issue crops up again and this time accompanied by a backfire or two. I pull off 77 and decide it's too dangerous to lose power on the main highway and call a tow. Any ideas on what I should look at? Plugs are good and wires are good.
Sorry that this happened as I was looking forward to seeing everyone and the drive. Love it up there in the mountains. Be safe and have fun!!!
-
Looks nice.
ICM? Timing does not miraculously cure itself. It could be a coil. Whatever it is, I suspect ignition. Or fueling.
-
I guess everyone arrived at Gatlinburg.
-
This sounds very much like my unsolved issue. I went through a ton of trouble shooting and parts replacement but since I. Prepping a swap I kinda set it aside for a bit.
-
I am looking forward to reading what happened to yours.
-
I have many pictures to post, and will post them soon, but right now I'm so tired I can't think straight.
My car is still in North Carolina. The transmission died, and I had t park it at a roadside store in the middle of no where. The lady who owned the store was very nice. i rode the rest of the run and the way home with Charlie (Thanks!).
-
Sorry to read about the trouble you had.
-
I'd look to the ignition coil first. They can break down and cause problems when they're hot. When they cool they will run fine until they heat up again. After that, I'd look at the distributor. Namely the ignition module and the pickup coil. You can have the ignition module tested at the parts store. Be sure to have them put a power load on it at least 3 times. They act similar to the coil when they heat up and cool down. The pickup coil can be tested with an ohmmeter. I don't know what the resistance should be but it can be found in some of the manuals.
I don't believe it's fuel related. If it were starving for fuel, you probably would have seen bright red exhaust manifolds.
-
I'm sorry to hear about the mechanical misfortunes.
I hope everyone had a safe trip, and a good time, other than the obvious. Wish I could have been there, but circumstances threatened to make it quite "uncomfortable", if not prohibitive.
And that's all I'm gonna say about that.
-
If you're joining us for the October C&C, I'll bring your shirts. Hope you're doing better, Steve.
-
TAD, how did your Formula do on RFTH?
-
Any ideas on what I should look at? Plugs are good and wires are good.
My Fiero has stranded me 3 times. One time I verified that it was a pickup coil. The other two times... I replaced the pickup coil among other things. I suspect the pickup coil was the culprit all three times. I'd recommend replacing that first. They're cheap. Also, after getting stranded, and getting towed, it would crank the next day.
-
Just as a financial note, when I blocked the rooms at Edgewater Inn, we had to pay a $250 security deposit. If we didn't cancel on time or there was no property damage, we would be refunded the deposit. I received the full refund yesterday.
-
This bunch of party animals didn't destroy any rooms?????
-
Haven't seen you post for a bit. All sorted?
