What is sticking up behind the cabin? At first, I thought those were the exhaust pipes.

I can't tell what they are, but when blowing up the picture, it appears that they actually punched their way through the body of the car. Maybe some kind of safety apparatus?

Those are the roll over bars that deploy in the event of a crash, many convertibles have them.

Quite some years ago, there was a similar situation at Gwinnett Mall. I don't remember if the guy bought the car or the parents bought it for him, but it was a Mustang bought at the Ford dealership on Satellite Blvd. He made it about a mile to the intersection of Satellite and Pleasant Hill, wrecked and died in the crash.
