Title: Fieros at Carlisle
Post by: pgackerman on January 05, 2021, 07:06:27 pm

Anyone going to Fieros at Carlisle at the end of June?

Presuming COVIDs are under control, civil disobedience is at a minimum, fuel is available, our cars are running, and the stars align.

Maybe, if there's a blue moon.

This may fit best under the events board.

I drove it in 10 hours with gas stops and grabbing a snack and drink.  Ran with cruise control most of the way, never more than 10 over the speed limit.  I had to slow down a bit when I hit Pennsylvania.  Roads.

I'm considering it.  Depends upon the back at that time.

That would be my plan.  However, we're supposed to visit my mother-in-law over the 4th of July...  IOW, it'll take some convincing for my wife to accept a 2,000 mile Fiero ride.

Can you fit all your clothes and such for the trip in the Fiero?  My wife and I drove separately, 2,400 miles.

Can you fit all your clothes and such for the trip in the Fiero?  My wife and I drove separately, 2,400 miles.

On a road trip, if you have a flat, you can't put your road tire into the trunk or in the front compartment.  So, there's no real reason to take along your mini-spare.  Just be sure to keep the jack and a good 4-way lug wrench.  Removing the spare and leaving it behind opens up a lot of space up front.  You either have AAA or you call road service.  If you're caravanning, one can unload and leave their gear with the crowd while they take the tire to be repaired or replaced.  Of course, this would be where one might want one of those ugly luggage racks instead of a spoiler.

Two people can pack more than a week's worth of clothing each, and hit the laundromat if you run short.  Melanie and I camped out for a week and we not only had a week's worth of clothing each, but a big tent and all our camping gear in the Fiero.

Got new tires late in 2020.  Decided to remove my 32+ year old spare.  Amazed how much room is up front.

Kept the jack, wrench, and fix-a-flat.

Fieros are a pretty good design.

I would put the spare tire back up front for handling purposes.....taking away that much weight off of the front is going to make the car drive and handle much differently

Being local with a flat so I could call the wife to come with a spare is one thing.  Being 1500 miles away in the middle of nowhere with a flat is not my idea of a good road trip.  Do they still make Goodyear runflats?  I'd go native, one pair of shorts, sandles so no socks a few t shirts and pack the spare and good to go.

I would bet few of our 35 year old spares have ever had the pressure checked.  Then there's the fact that they are 35 years old.   Unless they've been replaced I wouldn't depend on it to get me anywhere.

Agreed.  Unless the battery is moved up front.

There is a tire that will work as a replacement.  I suspect that GoodYear does not make a tire that will fit.

Usually, I have a chase vehicle, but if not, there was a reason.

In a car show, points are deducted for no spare.  I don't put things in for the car show, or remove other times.

The air pressure on mine gets checked at every oil change.

One could leave a sunroof glass in its storage place up front or if they have a shade, leave it in place.  That would cover the missing spare tire.

Some people on Pennocks have said that the spare tire is still available.  It may not be Goodyear, but the size is what's important.

Something that should be said about using the emergency spare when the vehicle has custom wheels on it.  Most custom wheel lugs will not work with the mini spare tire, so a set of OEM lug nuts should also be kept with the spare.  A Tupperware sandwich container is an ideal size and sits comfortably in the hub of the wheel or on the ledge at the lower part of the bulkhead.

My son and I are going in our red 85.  It's about 8.5 hours from Corbin KY to there, so may leave a day early and stop halfway for the night.  I have already scored some compact camping chairs, a small pavilion cover, and am determining which spare parts and tools I am taking and how to fit them everywhere LOL!

If anyone wanted to meet up I am hitting 81 at Bristol and running that route.  We are probably going to start out on the 23rd, stay the night mid way, and then get there around early afternoon on the 24th.  Going to leave either right after breakfast on the 27th, or maybe right after breakfast.

If I/We go, I plan to leave the Atlanta/Athens area on Friday morning.  I can make the drive in 10 hours, arriving late afternoon Friday.  The actual show is on Saturday, and I'll return on Sunday, or if my plans work out, I will continue on to Millinokett, Maine on Sunday.  Our route from down here will take us up I-77 from Charlotte to intersect I-81 in the Fort Chiswell, Va. area.

Real outside chance I may go.  My MIL lives about half an hour from Carlisle.  We used to go often there and Hershey looking for old car junk when we lived in Maryland, but never with a Fiero.  Wife needs to make a visit and wants to take kids as her mom's mental health is not good and slipping.  It would be a two car trip to take a fiero, and with kids, making stops for gas and food it takes us about 13 hours.  Were still young enough to do it in a single run but you feel it the next day.  Probably will not know for a while if were going as they are COVID scared and do not want visitors yet.

I only stopped for fuel and grabbed snacks at the same time.  I did stop once at a Dunkin' Donut for donuts and coffee to go, but it was right across the road from a Love's Travel Center.

Got this update from Jennifer.

As we gear up to our 27th (yes 27!!) Annual Fieros at Carlisle, we wanted to reach out to past attendees and extend a warm welcome to register and attend this year's event.

We are already at 74 registered attendees and aiming to have 100 Fieros on the showfield in June. For some perspective, in 2019, we had 49 pre-registered and 73 Fieros on the showfield. If we get 6 more pre-registered by the end of this month, we will give away at least one Pickardt Performance tee chosen from our list of registrants.

This year's events will begin on Thursday June 24 and stretch until our farewell breakfast, Sunday AM. The cornerstone Fieros at Carlisle show will be held as part of GM Nationals on Saturday, June 26. We will have 7 classes sponsored by Carlisle productions and nearly 20 special awards.

To learn more, visit www.mafoa.com

We hope you are able to join us for some fun and that you are staying well in this crazy world!

Best,

~ Jennifer
MAFOA President

Jennifer is reporting that they already have 71 Fieros pre-registered.  There are predictions that there will be more than 120 Fieros in the Fiero Show Within The GM Nationals Show.

Dennis LaGrua reports that the Fairfield Inn is already booked out of regular rooms but they still have 20 rooms open in our block.  The hotels generally allow a no-charge cancellation if done by a certain time period before the reservation date.

The Carlisle GM Nationals is the centerpiece of this 4-day event that begins on Thursday, June 24, and runs to Sunday, June 27. The Fieros at Carlisle Show will be held on Saturday, June 26 as part of the GM Nationals taking place at the Carlisle Fairgrounds, June 25 & 26. Register now at the MAFOA website. Our official host hotel is the Fairfield Inn & Suites. They will guarantee their $119 a night room rate for our block through May 23. Please call 717-243-2080 to make your reservations.

Maybe we could make our reservations, then at the June meeting, see who is going, and those who aren't can cancel their reservations in time.  I'll send Jennifer a note to see what the cancellation date is and post it here when I find out.

Edit:  I checked with Jennifer and we can cancel up to 2 days before the event without penalties. So that would be June 22.

My son and I will be there.  We’ve got our room already and plan to leave KY Wednesday, stay somewhere Wednesday night, and make the rest of the run on Thursday where we have reservations at the Fairfield Inn Thursday through Saturday night.

I’ve got my GA Fiero club sticker on my car and listed my club in the registration.  Would love to see a bunch of the crew there!

There is a good possibility that we could have as many as 6 or 7 Georgia Fieros at the event.  Pat, Joe, and I are set to go.  If Jay and Larry with his two come along, that would be 6.  The host hotel is booked  out of the rooms reserved by MAFOA, but there are very reasonable hotels within 30 miles south in Shippensburg.

I'm going to hold out on registration till the last minute, too much flux around here but plans are starting to shape up and its penciled in.  Now I got to think about repair and maintenance stuff. Might also be up for a group drive up.  Wife and kids going up for longer and taking the VW.  Got to first match my schedule with house/dog sitter friend to know when I'll be driving up.

I'm pretty sure I registered my car as a modified daily driver. Although technically it's not a daily driver now, because I put collector car insurance on it. Besides, since I'm retired now, I don't need a daily driver.

Paul's has the 7730 with digital EGR.  If it was like mine, appearing factory with the stock EGR, they will allow it as stock.

I'm retired, too, but my Fiero is my go-to vehicle any time I go somewhere that doesn't require the truck.  It might not be driven in a week but it's still my daily driver.

This update from Dennis LaGrua on Pennocks:

The way it is shaping up this will probably the largest gathering of Fieros East of the Mississippi ever. Jen should post the pre-registration number shortly but based upon what I have heard the climb to 150 or more seems very likely.
Pre-registration ends on Monday May 24th but if you miss that deadline date you can always register the day of the show Sat June 26th at the front gate. If you register the day of the show please mention MAFOA. Carlisle 2021 is going to be an absolutely incredible show. There should also be over 4000 other GM cars there exhibiting, celebrity guests, tables/booths for dealers that sell parts, books, tools, and accessories. There is even a woman's oasis tent that sells products for the ladies who aren't classic car lovers. The long food court under the grandstand serves a wide variety of good food at very fair prices. There is also an authentic Southern style BBQ stand not far from the food court that is our favorite.
If you are going, be sure to book your lodging reservations now. Hotel rooms in the area fill up at show times and can be hard to find.

Mine falls under modified...

I have reservations for my son and I at the Fairfield Inn and Suites Carlisle.

Looks like Eric and I are leaving on Wednesday around lunch and driving to Roanoke to stay the night (about 5 hours).  Then we can get up in the morning Thursday, have breakfast, and take our time heading into Carlisle which would be about 4 and half hours from there.

For those who might want to caravan to Carlisle, I plan on leaving the RaceTrac gas station, 5901 Hwy 53, Braselton , I-85 Exit 129 at 7 AM on the morning of the 25th.  I only stop for fuel, snack and bathroom break.  I don't stop for lunch, just using the snack to get me through the trip.

If all goes well, that should put us into Carlisle somewhere between the hours of 5 and 7 PM.  Anyone is welcome to tag along with me.

There's a decent Super 8 in Daleville/Troutville just north of Roanoke.  Even has a good Mexican place across the parking lot.  Not much of a breakfast, but I haven't stayed at any hotel for the past year with much of a breakfast.

There's a decent Super 8 in Daleville/Troutville just north of Roanoke.  Even has a good Mexican place across the parking lot.  Not much of a breakfast, but I haven't stayed at any hotel for the past year with much of a breakfast.

It's been a little different with the virus, but if you're ever in Gatlinburg, stay at the Edgewater Inn.  Enough variety that if you leave hungry, it's your own fault.

Almost every year we do part of the Peach Tree 23 https://www.peachtree23.com/ (https://www.peachtree23.com/)
(BTW, VERY Fiero unfriendly)

How could a 40 mile yard sale be Fiero-friendly?
If you're going to buy a bunch of stuff, you probably need a truck, SUV, or even a trailer to get your treasures home.

Or am I missing something?

I get it. I don't see how a Fiero would be practical for such an event. Which was the point of my post.
Unless the residents are just Fiero-hostile. And that would be a whole 'nother thing, entirely.

OK.  So back to the GM Nations at Carlisle.  This is from the GM Nationals website.  It may be a good idea to take along a small bottle of hand sanitizer that you can carry in your pocket, plus a few face masks.

Health Safety Measures
• Touchless admission is available by using a season pass or admission tickets
purchased online. Tickets may still be purchased at the gates.
• Upon exit, tickets (instead of hands) will be stamped for re-entry permission.
• Event guides available at self-serve stands.
• Physical distancing of 6 feet is encouraged.
• An abundance of handwashing and hand sanitizer stations are available at high
traffic areas and throughout the venue.
• Customer service areas have plexiglass shields.
• High traffic areas have one-way directional signage.
• Picnic tables and other sitting areas are spread out for physical distancing.
• Fast-acting sanitizing products are being used on all surfaces (counters, picnic
tables, door handles, restrooms, etc.).
• Current CDC guidelines are posted throughout the venue.
• PPE is provided to event staff including sanitizer wipes for golf carts.
• Activities that draw crowds, such as autograph-signing, include signage and
staff to adhere to physical distancing guidelines.
• All condiments and cutlery will be provided to customers instead of self-serve.
• Screen covers are included on credit card machines.
• Periodic public address announcements are made as reminders to wash hands,
keep physical distance and follow CDC guideline signs

Despite the gloomy outlook for this weekend and early next week with the tropical cyclone moving in, the forecast beginning Thursday is sunny and clear.  Weather systems generally move over Georgia and follow up the Eastern Seaboard, so looks like we'll be hauling a load of good weather up to Carlisle.

As we get closer, who is planning to leave out with me Friday morning from the RaceTrac in Braselton at 7AM?

Larry, Paul, and Joe are departing a day or two earlier.  From here, we have Jay, Gabe, Pat, and me that will be departing Friday.

I'm planning on bribing the judges with Georgia peaches to put me in the least competitive class.  Pecans if I get a trophy.

My exterior looks stock.  Interior-wise the radio is obviously different.

I've got a working UT4 (not the cassette though) that I can bring for you to install for the show LOL!!!!

There are some important wires that run behind the radio.  It may be a bad idea to change out the radio shortly before or while on a long trip.

I have leather seats and a Grand Prix radio and a 3.4.  Unless it's something that's very obvious, they allow it as stock.

Not there, but  just driving up for classification, they put me in custom 1.  Looking inside, custom 2.  Engine bay, custom 3.
Title: Re: Fieros at Carlisle
Post by: Fierofool on June 20, 2021, 10:19:27 am
In 2019 they put me in stock with the above named upgrades.  My 3.4 looks like a 2.8.  Had I done the 7730 conversion with coil pack, I couldn't go stock.
Title: Re: Fieros at Carlisle

Even without the engine bay, they won't put me in stock.  I have to compete against everyone with custom paint jobs.

A note for those who have pre-registered.  Bring the letter that came with your admission decal.  It will be needed to collect your goody bag.  I think MAFOA only has enough bags for those who have pre-registered.  Jenn said they had 150.

MAFOA has set up a Road Aid network for those traveling along major routes.  There is one that includes the I-85 corridor out of Atlanta, taking I-77 and I-81.  There is also one for I-40 through Tennessee to connect.  I have Jennifer's number that we are to call if anyone breaks down and needs road assistance on the way up or back.  Another is I-59, 75, and 40 to I-81 coming up from the Gulf Coast.

If you have any Georgia Fiero attire, try to wear it on Saturday.  RFTH tshirts if you don't have a Members shirt.  You might bring along a folding chair, too.
I have a fresh box of about 500 club business cards for us to drop into cars and to place on the cowl of our cars during show display.

Goodguys and NSRA Events are similar, held several times a year at large fair grounds locations and each would let in fiero's because of age (25 year old cut off).  But these started as street rod shows and if you brought a fiero you'd probably be the only one there.

Back to the 80's in Minneapolis would be appropriate.  This is a spinoff show from their usual Back to the 50s event.

The Radwood events starting recently in CA and slowly spreading are 80s car focused.  Follow on IG to see what they are up to.

Trenten's LS4 Turbo 1987GT.  Going for 900 HP for the strip and boost dialed down for 500 HP for the road.

What's up front.  And there's another intercooler in the trunk.

What's underneath.  A complete Corvette drivetrain, front and rear, including power steering.

The sit-around at the hotel after the show.

Something you don't see every year.  Found this in Virginia.

We will be sending you a copy of this newsletter via email; however, if you would like a print edition, please let me know - as well as the best address to send it to.

Nearly 130 Fieros attended the show and feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. We were so excited to welcome among them so many members of the Georgia Fiero Club!!  We are already excited for next year's show, which will be held June 23-26. We hope you will once again join us again as a sponsor and anticipate beginning our planning process quite soon.

We will also continue to spread the word about the Run for the Hills!!

Thank you for your support!

Best,

~ Jen

I thought there were 150 Fieros registered.  Only 130 showed?

I think the official attendance was 128 of the 150 that pre-registered.  There may have been more than 22 of those that didn't show and some of the final attendance was gate registrations.

Some of those who didn't make it were from Canada.  Canada closed their border again.

Something many don't realize is the prep work and post work that goes into a successful, annual event.  There is an incredible amount of work that goes into events.  We host an event in October.  Other than last year, we get between 2K and 10K attendees.  Last year, we had about 3,500 participants, but they were all virtual.  Each attendee pays a registration fee of about $2,500.  The event has sponsors, with sponsorships starting at $50K.  We have various vendors present.  Booths are $10K.  We have one staff member who is the event coordinator, and she spends about 90% of her time working on this event.  I'm not saying she is the most efficient person, but this certainly takes months to set up.  Her duties include handling the sponsors, attendees, and vendors; dealing with the city for permits and such; dealing with whatever venue; organizing volunteers and ambassadors; handling the web site and payment processing; doing some of the marketing and promotion of the event.  We have to rent equipment for lighting and such, as well as trucks for moving stuff.  We have to buy food and drinks, there is various swag, awards, and such, lots of apparel, security, signage, and other items.  For the month leading up to the event, most of the staff assembles "goodie bags".  All the attendees must be sorted for various things.  Various activities must be handled.  Then there are all sorts of support services.  Medical staff is on hand.  After the event, there is cleanup, and often things must be mailed out.  There are always challenges that must be dealt with.  One year, the official who signed a permit had been removed from office, and his successor decided to revoke the permit--as the event started.

We lose money on this event, every year, if you add up all the labor costs.
