Title: Instrument cluster board
Post by: montegut on April 03, 2021, 12:20:18 pm
I hope to be changing the tach board soon on my 87 GT and remember that the circuit tracings were separating from the substrate board. A while back I read on PFF the recommendation to use nail polish as a glue to fix the problem.  I worry if over time due to heating if the nail polish would become brittle and break. Any suggestions?
Thanks

Are you changing the board with another used board, or replacing it with a new board?

The membrane doesn't encounter any abrasions, other than from the tabs on the bulb holders.  Should the fingernail polish eventually lose its bond, the membrane is held in place by the bulb holders, and polish could be reapplied if ever needed.

In the graphics industry, I used transparent double-sided tape.  It was basically a strip of cellophane with adhesive on both sides.  But, wouldn't you know Gorilla Tape makes it.

Also, go to www.Quill.Com and search for Scotch® Permanent Double Sided Tape Refill, 1/2" x 25 yds., 1" Core, 1 Roll (665)
Item #: 369-665129   Model #: 66512X25 Brand: Scotch.  It's $7 plus change.  I would trust this to work.

I buy all my disinfectants, paper towels, and toilet paper from Quill.  Free delivery.  During the TP shortage, I got 98 rolls of TP for $56.  Got masks.  I just recently replenished my Viva paper towels.  A 6-pack double role package for $15, set at my doorstep.  At the store with a store membership discount card, 6 single rolls are $14.

I still have TP from Quill, from a year ago.

The membrane on the back also delaminates at the edges.

I only use the Quill TP in the front bathroom.  It doesn't have a cardboard core, so I had to make a special holder for it.  They are triple rolls, single ply.  In a year I think there are less than a half dozen rolls used.  Still have about 30 left.  Equivalent to 90 standard rolls.

Oh, no.  I only use double-ply, perforated sheets.  I prefer the core.  My son (the household paper products manager) once picked up single-ply.  I did not use them.

This is strong enough and it was all I could get at the time.  Strange subject for Tech Tips, Tech Questions.

I am replacing the tachometer circuit board with one from West Coast Auto Parts. I will try the double sided tape for the repair of the membrane separating from the substrate. Thanks

If you are successful, I have one that needs repair.

Their board fixed my problem but afterwards my oil gauge stopped working. Can’t figure out what I did wrong.

Isn't your oil gauge at the lower part of the tach?

Best to test with old board.

Tim, is it the copper strip separating from the clear membrane, or the clear membrane separating from the white skeleton?  Either way, the Scotch double-side tape should work.

Membrane from the skeleton. Will go with the double sided tape. Thanks
