My fuel sender is from the original batch of reproductions. The sender does work, but not consistently. There seem to be dead zones. Is there any way to fix this? I have tried cleaning the contacts, adjustment, and various other things, but no change.

Sometimes the wiper or wires get fuel varnish buildup. Removing that varnish might help. Before reinstalling be sure to test for continuity through its full range, using an ohmmeter.
-
I ordered a replacement, but will keep trying. I think we got the varnish off.
-
My fuel tank is out, so I can replace the sender and fuel pump. The straps are out, but there is a brace. Since the tank will be out for at least 2 weeks, I put the brace back in, then moved the Fiero back into the carport. Is the brace necessary?
-
Yes, for safety's sake.
-
Would the frame spread, or something?
Just curious.
I hope to put the tank in Sunday night.
-
The frame probably wouldn't spread. Lots of major things would have to give in order for that to happen, but in the event any of the straps or its hardware should give due to rust or other factors, that brace would keep the tank from coming out or dropping. Without it, if the front strap should give way, the front of the tank could scrub the pavement, rubbing a hole in the tank with resulting sparks. Catastrophe.
-
I put the brace in, and snugged the bolts, but did not torque them. Should be enough to keep everything in place. If nothing else, I won't lose the bolts.
-
Here goes nothing.

Fuel pump, sender, and tank installed.
-
Where did you get the sender? I’m going to drop tank soon and want to do a full overhaul.
-
Ralph, in the event you don't already know, the L4 uses a different fuel pump than the V6, so when ordering, be sure to get the correct one. It runs a lower pressure than the V6.

I got it from TFS. Like the fuel pump, the sender is different, so will require some wiring changes to be compatible.
-
Beware TFS' fuel pumps. Ansco is not a quality brand.
-
I know the pump is different but is the sender different too? Only shows as a v6 sender.
-
The wiring is different.
-
Got ya. I just read on TFS that it will work with splicing the wires.
What brand of fuel pump are you guys having good luck with?
-
This one is an ACDelco.
-
We've also used Bosch pumps with good results. I think it was Delphi that we had some failures with.
-
Ditto on Bosch pumps.
-
Bosch pumps usually have the correct wiring harnesses that don't need splicing.
-
Mine went in, no splicing. The sender will need splicing on the L4.
