Title: Run for the Hills 27
Post by: Wreck It Ralph on September 26, 2021, 08:36:42 pm
I had a blast and this was my first year. I see now that you cannot plan too far ahead. I want to start the discussion now.

 What did we like?

What didn’t we like?

Route suggestions? Jason and Roger had some thoughts.

I suggest any route that takes us to Calhouns in Gatlinburg

Proposed Leg one of Scenic Route

The Sightseer's Tour has been modified but hasn't been scouted and finalized as of May 18.

I seem to remember that Pisgah Inn has limited hours for lunch for non-hotel diners.  Probably need to contact them about that before setting that as a lunch stop.  Melanie and I and another couple stopped there once and we were turned away.

Any idea on which weekend the Run will be next year? 24th? I have to put my vacation in after Christmas to ensure I get it approved just in case...

Budgetman72 (Jason Spencer) and I will be doing a scouting run for RFTH 27 on April 23.  Again, this year there will be a White Knuckles Run and a Sightseer's Run.

Jason and I will be holding a planning meeting this Saturday, March 19 at 1PM at the Applebee's on Steven B. Tanger Blvd, Banks Crossing, Commerce.  Jason will be leading the White Knuckles tour in September and on the scouting run, but we need someone to lead the Sightseer's Run.

Come join us for this planning session.  It will be a beautiful day for a Fiero drive.  Bring the lady and do some shopping nestdoor at Tanger Outlet Mall before or after the meeting.

Just want to attend but can't do either of those dates... :( Got work tomorrow and Earth Day saturday.

What will the schedule look like on the scouting run April 23?

Scouting runs are usually just a one day thing.  Our meeting tomorrow is to decide where we will start.  We already know where we will end.  Also to work on a sightseers route to get them from the start point to the end point.

What we discussed at the planning session is that we will start in Dillard, Ga. travel through Highlands and Cashiers, NC, and have lunch near Canton, NC.

After our lunch stop, we will proceed northward through Hot Springs, NC, briefly entering into Tennessee and traveling almost to Erwin, then back into North Carolina, and making our way down to Burnsville, NC, then ending in Asheville, NC.  From there, we will return home via I-26 and I-85.

This is the primary run.  The sightseers' run will separate from us in Cashiers, using an alternate route to arrive at the lunch stop.  From the lunch stop, they will head east while the primary group will head north.  The sightseers will access the Blue Ridge Parkway to Asheville, then exit and head northward through the country and mountain valleys to Weaverville and Asheville.  This scouting trip will be done on another date.

Things are coming together for the 27th Annual Run For The Hills.  The primary route has been scouted and documented and we promise you, if you like driving, you will love this one.  We will begin in Dillard, Georgia and will work our way through the back roads of North Carolina, with a brief excursion Into Tennessee, then back to Asheville, NC.  We have several restaurants picked out that have always been favorites.

Again this year we will also have the Sightseer's Tour.  Set up so that both route participants may dine at the same restaurants together.  Hotel reservations and group rates are still in negotiation and haven't been finalized.  We will post that information as soon as we have rates and cutoff dates.

You may also follow us on facebook at The Georgia Fiero Club or Georgia Fiero Club

We are in need of someone to lead the Sightseer's Tour and to go with us on the scouting trip to familiarize themselves with the route.

Edited:  Sightseer's Scouting Trip is set for June 18.

I can probably go on the scouting run. Leading is less certain, given my history of leading.

Dumb questions:

1) Why are there two routes?  Considering the number of past breakdowns, having the scenic folk follow behind the other group seems like a good idea.  Granted, the fast group might have to wait 15 minutes for the scenic group to arrive at the lunch stop; but restaurants rarely seat large groups quickly.

2) When is the scenic tour scouting trip?

The Sightseer's Tour is a little less twisty for those who have issues with car sickness.  However, when in the mountains, it's difficult to give a lot of straight scenic roads with a variety each year.

You are correct that the sightseers could start last as we have always done until the last year or two, and they drive at their own pace.  Of course, most everyone drives at their own pace, just that the pace of some is faster than others.

On most roads, there are few places where the faster group can stop and wait on the others so even if everyone was on the same route it would be difficult to wait.

If anyone thinks they might want to lead the sightseer's group, I can send you the route sheet and you can try to familiarize yourself with it on Google Maps, then lead the scouting trip by following the route sheet.

It wasnt scouted and no one seems to want to lead it.  You may have to just sightsee the regular run or I can send the route sheet so you can study it and lead the others.

I'll send you both.  Garry and Vicki Dammond from Baltimore will probably take the sightseers tour, too, even though he drives a 3800SC.  I believe that's the route they took last year.

A little teaser for part of this year's RFTH.  This is NC 209, known as The Rattler.  This is some of the more sedate portion of the road.  It takes about 45 minutes to run the complete Rattler as we run it.  https://youtu.be/mMu7Qo2l9nc

For those of you who might want to attend but missed the hotel discount cutoff dates, You might check with Micro Tel Inn on Allman Road in Franklin, NC.  It's a few miles north but about 15 minutes away.  Also, 22 miles south in Clayton is Days Inn, Quality Inn, and America's Best.  All these hotels are right on the main highway where our hotel is located.  All hotels in the region are somewhat expensive at this time of the year and heavily booked.  Try Expedia or one of the online booking services.  Do not call North Carolina hotels direct.  Calls are redirected to a state booking site and the prices are usually higher and not in the area where you want to stay.

Some locals within short driving distances arrive on Saturday morning.  We don't recommend driving long distances and doing the event without sleep.  Saturday is a very strenuous day.

We usually arrive on Friday afternoon and socialize and do a final check of our automobiles to be sure all fluids are at the proper level, tires aired up, and any mechanical issues are fixed.  There are no organized activities for Friday because participants arrive at all hours of the afternoon and evening.  Registration forms and route sheets are distributed at this time.  There is no registration fee.  This event is free.

Driver's meeting is Saturday morning at 8AM at our host hotel, Quality Inn 64 White Oak Lane, Dillard, GA.  Some find a restaurant for breakfast but most just partake of the free hotel servings.  There are few if any restrooms along our route, and none are scheduled except at our lunch and fuel stop.

All vehicles should be fully fueled prior to the meeting.  We pull out at 9AM.  We are on a schedule, so waiting for someone makes us late for our lunch reservation and evening dinner reservations.  When we arrive at our host hotel in Asheville, we should have time to get checked in and maybe freshen up a bit before our evening dinner at our scheduled restaurant.  If you can't get reservations at our hotel, there are Rodeway, Holiday Inn Express, Hilton Garden Inn, and our Fairfield all right there together at I-26 and Brevard Road, Asheville.

FRS radios are a good accessory.  Great for chit-chat, Yee-Haws on the hills and curves, Aw-$**ts, and for warning of various traffic situations and alerting others in the event of a breakdown.

I need at least two people who will be at the Dillard hotel on Friday night and can print at least 5 copies of the route sheet.  I have some printed but my printer is having problems and some of what it's now producing isn't legible.

Phase 1 is just a single sheet.  Phase 2 is printed front and back of the page.  Then staple Phases 1 and 2 together.

Hey folks.  New member here from the MAFOA, I joined GA to get info on the run this year.  Looks like I will be able to make it afterall!!  I'll be driving down from PA Friday, should get to Dillard early evening.  I reserved rooms at both host hotels about a month ago so I can hang out with the group.  Barring any unforseen car issues in the next 24 hours I will see you all tomorrow night or Sat AM.

Beautiful pictures, Paul and Toni.  Having lived in New England I always thought Mt. Washington was the tallest peak east of the Missisippi.  Maybe due to the extreme weather they have up there.  Didn't know it was Mt. Mitchell until one RFTH that it was on our route.  No one made it to the top, only to the parking lot as our schedule didn't allow.

Maybe in the spring you can lead us on a one day sightseeing trip.  No trails or hiking for us old folk, though.  Picnic On The Ground.

Yes, I did.  Picnicking in the Fiero is easy.  I have a long narrow cooler that Melanie gave me that holds about 9 cans of soft drinks and ice.  Fits in one side of the bottom of the trunk.  Other picnic supplies beside it or one can remove the spare tire, put soft drinks and ice in the front tub.  There's a drain as the ice melts.    Folding chair or two on top.  Pre-cooked hot dogs and hamburgers securely wrapped in foil can be placed on top of the V6 intake and would be nice and warm at lunch time.  Maybe even a pre-cooked steak or two.
