Title: Electric Crate Motor
Post by: TopNotch on November 04, 2021, 05:10:56 pm
For those who want to make a DIY electric car, Ford is planning to sell electric crate motors.
See an article about them here (https://www.reviewgeek.com/102215/forget-tesla-make-your-own-ev-with-fords-new-electric-crate-engine/).
Maybe I could replace the duke in my yellow Fiero with one of these.

BLASPHEMY!!   :D :P

"..To show off one of the many possibilities of this $3,900 EV engine, Ford debuted a custom 1978 F-100 pickup highlighting just how capable its e-crate engine can be..." wasn't expecting it to be UNDER 4K...interesting!

"Ford opted to use two motors, each rated at 281 hp and 317 lb-ft of torque, giving the classic F-100 a combined output of 480 horsepower and 634 lb-ft of torque, which is impressive.
And considering *each electric motor only weighs about 220 lbs, this truck has some serious get-up."

*Batteries not included.

The motor is only about 1/3 of the equation. The inverter/speed controller and batteries will still need to be sourced.  It will still be closer to 15,000 to really convert anything. That's if you can find enough places to stick the batteries. Manufacturers will need to come up with "LEGO" style batteries that can be placed next to and on top of each other and in smaller sizes than traditional batteries come in.  That will open up more options for battery placement in a larger number of older cars. If the entire package could be had for under 8,000 I would seriously consider converting an older car when the vehicles internal combustion engine needed to be replaced.
