Title: Suspicious email from "club member"
Post by: Raydar on June 24, 2022, 02:10:59 pm
Read from bottom up.

From a club member who we haven't seen in a while.
Nothing suspicious about this at all... right? Odd that he/they knew my name, and signed their email as a club member.
Y'all be careful.

The Red Flag is the gift cards.

I got one too, but from the wrong email address for that person, so it's fake.

Right. And as Charlie said, the gift card thing was a huge tip-off.
I certainly didn't think it was really a club member - even a "dormant" member. But it would appear that someone has at least compromised that person's address book.
My name is nowhere in my club email address, but he called me by name.

Mostly just wanted people to be aware.

If anyone would fall for this, they certainly deserve it. I mean, come on, it's been going on for years now and everyone has been warned about such things.  ::)

Now the terrible part is, this has somehow pushed into our website stuff.

sorry to dig up an old topic but this made me chuckle :D. i used to work at a credit union/banks and there are still many that fall for this. all backgrounds;

i say we introduce a new GFCCoin to fight spammers! :D
gift cards = spammers. actions taken: ban/delete/mark as spam/report.
GFCCoins = member argued with wife/girlfriend about the fiero again and is in the doghouse. actions to take: invite him over to drinks!

;D
Just to protect everyone in the case of a potential attack in the future, i want to make it clear that emails originating from me would read
"Greetings, <insertnamehere>

I find myself hitting rock-bottom. I was at Walmart, grocery shopping, waiting at the check-out line, browsing facebook marketplace, and 3 hours later I'm in Jacksonville, FL bargianing the purchase of a Fiero. Can you, o kind sir, find it in your heart to transfer 145 GFCCoins to my account? I can't let this beauty go...I pinkyswear I'll stop adding more vehicles to my garage after this one"

OR
"Hey man, I'm in jail. I just couldn't let the C8 Corvette guy berate Fieros like that. Someone had to punch him, amiright?? Anywho, please transfer 0.8 GFCCoins to my lawyer for bail money. I will return it right after I get released, track that sob down and set fire to his "car""
