Title: Basic question
Post by: fiero128 on January 04, 2023, 04:50:20 am
Is there any tension when tighting up the nuts that hold the rockers /tappets?
On one end of these are the push rods and the other end is the vavle stems. I know when tbe cam shalf lob is not pushing on thr push rod, they should be loose, and as  the lob pushes on the push rod they will depress the valve and open either thr intake of exhaust valve.

As you suggest, depending on cam position, there is tension.  Even with the lobe at zero lift there should be slight tension.

Go to the last page in this section and look at Valve Lash Adjustment For 60° V6.

The lifter has to be on the base circle of the cam, as opposed to on one of the lobes, when the valves are adjusted.
The usual suggestion is to use your fingers to spin the pushrod, and tighten the nut until you can feel "drag", and then tighten the nut the specified number of additional turns.
I prefer to "rattle" the pushrod side to side, or up and down. It's easier to tell when the slack is removed, that way. Sometimes they can spin quite easily, even when there is no slack.
The "specified number of additional turns" is either 1/2 turn, or 1.5 turns, depending upon who you want to believe. I have read both.  I tend to go "looser", as long as they don't clatter when I'm finished. I think I used 1 turn, but it's been a while since I built my 3.4, so I don't remember.

Lucky i asked this , i was going to just tighten the once use nuts thaffbi ordered from the fiero store. I know these are uze once only nuts. I am concerned that i dont want to harm thr thread on the post that holds the nuts down.

The nuts are From the fiero store

are the rockers supported on anything or are that just supported by the push rods and the valve springs ?

They just slip down over the studs and are retained by the nuts you purchased from the Fiero Store.

Did you get the email I sent you?

Topics that ask a technical question, such as this one, should be placed in the "Tech tips, tech questions" section, not in this section. This section is for giving expert advice, not asking questions.
