Title: 3800 Wiring Harness?
Post by: Cyb3rw0lf on March 13, 2010, 10:31:34 am
Hey everyone, Ive got a friend who now wants to drop a 3800 V6 into the '84 I sold him (He decided to after seeing how cheap it actually was and driving mine ^_^; ) just one problem, the engine he found seems to be a Series 2...with a distributor? I find that severely odd, its in a '95 Park Avenue and I don't believe the wiring harness diagram I made will even partially work with a series 2 since mine is based off of a '92 LeSabre, does anyone know if it will? or have a diagram for such a swap? Thanks.

Heres a pic of the engine he found, 75,000 miles:

a member of our club - flyboy 81 specializes in 3800n/a and 3800sc harnesses. he can tell you what you need and make it for you. you get a new harness all keyed to your car and requirements. another member - robs fieros buys, sells, and repairs fieros. his specialty is 3800 swaps both n/a and s/c. both members sometimes work together on projects. flyboy is from erwin tn. and robsfiero is from athens tn. i think both members have information on our links page. if no one picks up on this message just send me a message and i will help you get in touch.      oldone in c'ville,ga

Actually we just figured out something that was a bit of an issue previously, the year marker on the car says '85, we figured that was a mistake since we thought the Park Avenue wasn't built until '91...... Turns out the Buick Electra was the original Park Avenue, so its an '85 Buick Electra Park Avenue with a 3.8 V6... Maybe it uses the same style computer system as the '84 fiero hes looking at dropping it into? >.<

I don't think the fiero computer would be a good choice in running that engine.  The fiero ecm is very hard to get a good tune on and on top of that, its very specific to running the fiero's 2.8 profile.  I would try to use the donor harness and ecm from the buick.

Thats what I meant lol, unfortunately my friend is just severely in need of a vehicle that runs properly (his ranger is slowly dying) and wants as simple as possible but cheap, the engine, ECM, and harness are $200, we just don't know if the computers are the same type (OBD-1, OBD 1.5, ect.) which would of course lead to a ton of complications in the harness like mine had..... I'm really not very good with these wiring harness' and such ^_^; my dad actually did most of mine.....>.>

OBD II computers didn't come out until the mid 90's, so that can be eliminated.  When you showed the engine with a distributor, my first thoughts were that it was a RWD 3800, maybe from a Camaro.  I really couldn't make out what it was in by looking at the picture.  Could the 7730 be configured to work?

It could be possible to use the 7730.  I need to know a little more bout the harness and connections on the engine.  Is it mpfi?  I can't see it well in the pic.  I wonder if its the same bolt pattern as the 2.8?  If it basically wires up the same as the fiero 2.8, I could probably do a 7730 ecm.  This is not an obd I car either.  Its a GM 1 diagnostic port.  It can only be scanned for code and very few funtion tests performed engine off, key on, like the fiero.

Its MPFI but from what your saying Flyboy, if its a GM 1 diagnostic port that is....Then it should just be a matter of getting everything out of the Buick, dropping the engine into the Fiero, routing the wiring harness from the Buick to the other side of the engine, through the firewall, and connect it to the Buick's computer......Right?

Basically I'd say that's about right.  I don't think there is any kinda of security, granny doesn't use ecm and all the power sources for the harness can be mated to the c203.  Only issue will be lengthening the wires where you need them I believe.

Everyone here, I now worship the ground you walk on...And Ill drag my buddy up to the first meeting I can make it to and let him kiss your feet -_^ one more quick question I was told to ask though: Supposing that there is a problem...How much would one charge to combine the two harnesses?

I charge 400 for my swap harnesses.  I just realized you said 84 fiero.  I've yet to do a harness for an 84 although I don't have a problem givin it a go if you're interested.  I try to keep my harnesses hidden and tucked away neatly.  Hopefully I'll get some pics of my finshed products on the cars themselves.

You really should, when my harness was done I looked everywhere I could for someone that sold them and couldn't find a single thing... Soooo yeah it looks like this:

Though the center console is actually on there...>.> I don't really mind since this is my daily driver, love the car to death none the less.

Lol, Dewey, I like your style.  That does sound cool.  If I wasn't full time back on the railroad, id be all over that idea.  I advertise on pennock's forum for harnesses but I don't get the orders like dan would for instance.  But its enough to keep me busy in my spare time.
