The Georgia Fiero Club is conducting a Two Seats Only Charity Poker Run on July 17. Road Atlanta and the Atlanta Region SCCA has been very instrumental in making this event happen. They have provided us with special rates considerations and exceptional hospitality.
This charity poker run is for the benefit of Robbie Finley. Many of you in the Fiero community know him as RobsFieros and his garage and its work in engine transplants, and repair and maintenance on our unique little cars.
You may also know about the serious injuries he suffered and the long term care he will need. The associated medical costs will be staggering and the other driver's insurance seems to have maxed on its payout. We can't raise enough money to pay the hospital bill, but we can cover the costs of the rehab facility, the lease and utilities on his garage, and assist with his and his wife's increased personal expenses.
In the process of helping Robbie, for additional fees payable to Road Atlanta, you will be afforded the opportunity to watch the SCCA races for one or two days and drive the Road Atlanta race course behind a pace car. Your event entry includes your lunch at The Paddock Grill and a pass giving you a reduced entry price into the track.
Come out and join us for a fun weekend and for a very worthy cause. The Georgia Fiero home page at www.gafiero.org has links for the event.
The starting point is at the Gwinnett County Airport, Briscoe Field off Ga. Highway 316. The address is 850 Airport Rd, Lawrenceville, GA 30046
Google Map or Mapquest Briscoe Field, Lawrenceville, Ga. for location.

as long as I am in town you can count me in ;D
I will see what I can do to get others to come as well.
D.
-
Nathan and Seth, could you guys contact the MR2 club and others you might know of?
-
For those of you thinking of driving the track, I understand that they are a bit picky about oil leaks. I don't know if they will do any kind of inspection for these paced laps, but if your car has a significant oil leak, you may want to consider getting it fixed before the event.
-
They've said nothing about any inspections being required, but I agree, that if it's leaking enough oil to show up after being parked for 30 minutes, it probably should be tightened up a bit.
-
During the drive, there are 7 check points. I need someone with a Fiero to man each of the check points. The Fiero will be the marker the participants will look for along the way.
Since this is a Fiero sponsored event, it would be good to have some Fieros involved in this. If you don't intend to drive, at least come out and help us make this event worthwhile for the other participants, and to help Robbie and Gail with the expenses related to his care.

Charlie, I'll man a Check Point..... 85GT

For anyone from out of town, or wanting to stay for the races on Sunday, may I recommend Country Inns and Suites located on Ga. Hwy 124 in Braselton, Ga. It's about 5 miles from the Road Atlanta Course and about 15 miles from the starting point of the poker run at the Gwinnett County, Ga. airport.
http://www.countryinns.com/braseltonga
Georgia Hwy. 124 will take you to within 1 mile of the Gwinnett County airport.
Pre-registration is recommended so we can let the caterer know how much food to order for our group.

I think every club officer and board of director member should man a check point, with the exception of Charlie. He'll have his hands full running the thing, I think.
-
I totally agree with you.....
-
Thank you Pat and Jerry. I've had to cut out 2 of the checkpoints because no one has volunteered. I now have 5 checkpoints in the run. I need 4 more people at a minimum. It would be good to have 2 people at each post.
Since dropping Children's Healthcare, we don't have their banners to mark the checkpoints. I want to have a Fiero parked at the side of the road at each point except the start and finish.
I plan to be at the start point for at least an hour then go to the finish point to start checking people in. I need some help at the track reception tent. Ideally two persons. Pat and Linda could use an extra person at the start point, too.
At least 2 of the checkpoints are out in the open, without shade. I have one canopy for a checkpoint and another for the reception. We need at least 1 more canopy for shelter at the checkpoint. If you have one, even if you aren't participating, we'd like to borrow it.
I also have flyers that need to be distributed. I'll deliver them to you if you want. Take a few and put them on vehicles at the grocery store, doctor's office, or put out a few at the auto parts stores or even a car show in your area.
-
Charlie,
I was able to distribute all of the fliers on Saturday while I was at the Corvette/Chevy show. Hopefully some of those folks will show up and bring some friends.
Tom
-
Thank you, Tom. If you'd like more fliers, I'll bring them to you. I've been on the web contacting 'Vette clubs as well as all kinds of sports car and cruiser clubs. Hope we can have a good turnout.
When is the Riverstone or whatever it is car show up in Canton? Maybe we could hit them before July 17.
I have also found 5 shows down here. 2 in Buford, 1 in Loganville, and 1 in Auburn that needs to be hit with fliers.
So far, manning course checkpoints are--
Tom Green
Don
Jerry
Kevin
I need 1 more volunteer and 2 more at the finish to help me.
Pat will be manning the start point and I will be at the finish.
Edit:
Add Tom Ott for one of the course checkpoints.
-
Charlie,
I will be glad to work a checkpoint and I have a quick-up canopy, too. As long as my status at work doesn't change, I'll be there.
Tom Ott
Rat Pee 86
-
Thanks, Tom. That gives me someone at each checkpoint, but I also need 1 person in reserve and 2 to help me at the finish at Road Atlanta, just in case someone can't make it on the day of the run.
I've got use of all the checkpoints approved, except for 2. Waiting on one person to get back into town for 1 location, and the other location phonei s busy 24 hours a day.
-
Charlie,
When I say I will work a checkpoint, I mean that I will be happy to do whatever you need me to do for the event's success, checkpoint, end point, start point, whatever.
Tom Ott ;D
-
I know this is a silly question when talking about Fiero participation, but... at this time, how many Fieros are you expecting to come? As for me, I just don't know yet. It's looking doubtful that I can get off work, but I would love to go.
-
To be honest, I have no idea how many Fieros will be there. About 7 of our cars are working as staff and won't be driving the course, but will arrive at the track later. Only the ones at the first 2 or 3 checkpoints will be able to make it to the track in time to enjoy the paced laps. I plan to place those who want to get onto the track at the early checkpoints.
-
Old One will be working with 85GT at one of the check points. Tim Shannon will be with me at the checkin at Road Atlanta. Don and Darrell will be at a checkpoint, I plan to send Ray and Royce each to work with Tom Ott and Tom Green.
-
me and the wifey will be attend, unforeseen things pending. gotta replace my HVAC blower motor before then as well.
I printed out some fliers. Unfortunately, when I saw a Viper GTS today, I didn't have any on me and couldn't locate the owner. also, twice I've seen a red fiero at a mom and pop repair shop, again no fliers, and when pass back by to drop a business card... it's gone!
-
Great news. I dug into the convertible today to get the transmission swapped out and discovered that it is NOT a transmission problem....it is only a rear wheel bearing (but it started as soon as the car hit second gear on the previous drives, so I assumed inner tranny problems). I have a new one ordered from the Fiero Store, will have it put in along with new rear brakes this week, take it on a shakedown run on the parkway next weekend....and should make the run with Sharon and the convertible. I will not be driving it on the track....but Chris will have his Lotus on the track, so we will have some fun with that.
Now the bad news. I will not trust the car for a 5 hour drive to Atlanta and back...so I want to trailer it down there, run the poker run, and trailer it back. Is there somewhere there that I will be able to park the truck and trailer?
-
I can find a place for you. There's an old Ingles parking lot here in town and it's only about 8 miles from the starting point. The store is empty so there's no other vehicles there.
A common cause of failed rear bearings is that the car gets rolled on the wheels while the axelshafts are out during engine or transmission work. I've heard that they only have to be rolled a few feet.
-
There's an article on Pennock's about a guy who took his rear bearings apart and re-packed them, so apparently they come apart easily when not held together by the axle nut.
-
Cheever, you still planning to make the poker run? What does your schedule look like? Anyone else coming up?
-
I got a del sol comming, and maybe a older nissan Z car. still hunting for others
-
If you don't pre-register tonight before the PayPal link shuts down, print out the registration form, have it filled out when you come to the starting point. It makes it much easier and faster for you and for us.
Each person in the vehicle must register for the discounted entry into the track, otherwise they will have to pay the full price to Road Atlanta and purchase their own meals.
-
here are some pictures I took of ya'll on the track

-
I have video of some of the races and the Fieros on the track, but I don't have a DVD burner. I've transferred the film off to a VHS tape. It includes the RFTH 15 Shakedown Run, the Poker Run happenings at the track, plus a video montage of the shakedown and poker run set to music.
If anyone can burn a DVD from my digital camera, let me know. You're also welcome to copy the VHS tape. Tim Shannon has burned some DVD's of the Road Atlanta activities, and he said he will bring some to the meeting in August, for those who helped and participated in the poker run.
A special thanks goes out to all of you who helped. Pat, Linda, Ray, Don, Steve, Jerry, Dewey, Tom Ott and Tom Green, Kevin and Tim. We couldn't have asked for a better day. A special thanks to Tom (Carnut122) Green and Steve (Raydar) Hamilton for coming so far just to man a check point. Both of them had other things to tend to and immediately after closing their checkpoint, returned home, but they came out to support the club.
CowsPatoot, Sharon, Chris and Sabrina were the long-trekkers, driving 4 1/2 hours from North Carolina.
Lots of fun for the staff who took advantage of the on track experience. Pace speed was supposed to be 65MPH, but at times Ray and I hit 85. We might have done a little better had it not been for the couple in the Honda sedan who kept getting lapped. There was supposed to be no passing, but the pace car finally went past them and everyone else followed Then there was the Corvette who was also holding everyone back.
There is another track day coming up and you will get to drive as fast as your little heart can stand. Costs a little more than our event, but you will have an experienced instructor in the car with you.
-
CowsPatoot took videos while riding as a passenger in my screaming duke (revving at 4k a lot of the time). I can't wait to get the file, and will make a DVD of it.
-
The file is too big to email or post on my website....toss me a snail-mail address and I will get a DVD into the mail for you.
-
These are some pictures taken by Tim and Richard.

Wish I could have made it to Road Atlanta. Been a long time since I've been up there.

Do we have a date for this event yet?
-
There is one in November, but I'm not sure of the date just yet. Bill was talking about the PDX and I think that's a regular event. I'll check with him to find out.
-
To those of you who missed this, you missed a lot of fun. (Besides the fact that it would have helped Robbie.)
