Title: Pontiacs In The Forge or Tybee Island
Post by: Fierofool on January 24, 2011, 03:30:57 pm
I was talking with Don about the All Pontiacs Show and he said he needed to paint his car in order to show it.  We touched on the possibility of going to Tybee Island instead, if he didn't get the car painted.

What is the feeling about doing a 3 day in Tybee Island instead of Pigeon Forge?  Or some could go to Pigeon Forge to show and the non-show cars could go to Tybee Island.  Since we normally go up to Pigeon Forge on Friday and come back Sunday, we could do the same for Tybee Island.

I believe the PITF is June 3, 4, and 5 so we could do Tybee on the same weekend.

You must log in to vote in the poll.
You may change your vote if your situation changes.

I'm in for Tybee, barring anything unforeseen.

Or some could go to Pigeon Forge to show and the non-show cars could go to Tybee Island.

At this point, my bet is mine will be a "non-show" car. If my 84 is working by then, my wife and I would like to join you all for Tybee Island.

If folks aren't up to a 3 day weekend at Tybee, maybe they could leave early Saturday morning, say maybe 7AM.  They would be there by around 1 and could enjoy one evening and night.  Not as much fun as 3 days, but still a good weekend together.

The hotel where we normally stay in Pigeon Forge is

I've heard from some others that they plan to be there.

Shall I start working on a hotel for Tybee Island for those going down there?

I've been concerned about the cost of gasoline affecting our trip to Tybee Island.  I spoke with Don today and he says it's still on, irregardless.  Right now, there are 5 who say they will go, so I'm going to block 6 rooms to start with.  If more sign up, then I can add some.  If you want to go, answer the poll.  It makes it easier to tabulate.

Rates at Howard Johnson are $216 per night.  At The Dunes, which is in the same area, a room with 2 double beds is $139.95 and with 2 queen beds is $149.95.  This is the regular rates.  When the manager returns, she will contact me with any special rates she may offer us.

The receptionist I spoke with said they have another group coming in that weekend, so we might want to lock down a block of rooms with a credit card.  I'm willing to do this, but I need a guarantee that anyone who says they are coming will cover the cost whether they go, or not.

We've booked our rooms already, so obviously, we are committed ;D
Friday $ 99.00 plus tax, Saturday $ 149.00 plus tax
Call instead of booking online, it'll save you a little money it seems.

If for some reason nobody goes, we are going anyways, we want to see Savannah

I just spoke with Diane Brown at The Dunes and Don's correct on his rates.  $99 for Thursday night, $149 for each Friday and Saturday and $129 for Sunday night.  I checked for lower rates either by phone or online and they're the same rates either way.

Anyone on this side of town, it's shorter to go down through Madison and Millegeville on US 441 and connect I-16 in Dublin.  That's the way I'm going and I'll link up with others in Dublin.

For this trip, everyone be sure to bring your FRS radios.  I-16 can be a boring stretch with nobody to talk to.  Rain or shine, I'll be there.

For the Tybee Island folks, I've calculated the time from Douglasville to Dublin as being about 3 hours.  If those folks stop in McDonough, Exit 218 there's a QT just to the left.  If you refuel there it should get you to Dublin where we will all refuel.

For those out in the East side, I've calculated the time from Lawrenceville to Dublin, going cross-country as being about 3 hours, also.  If we fill up in Lawrenceville, we can make Dublin on one tank, or for safety, refuel in Madison.

Everyone can refuel in Dublin and make the 2 hour trip to Tybee Island on that tank.

With that travel time in mind, what time shall we meet in Dublin?

Who has made their reservations at Pigeon Forge?

Who has made their reservations at Tybee Island?

Room booked for Friday night and Saturday night.
I can't leave Norcross until about 11:45/12:00ish, after which I'll head home first to Buford, pick up the boss and then head on out.

After mapping it out, we'll probably just take I85>285>I75>I16, all highway

I didn't have anything specific planned.  Just play it by ear.  You and Anne should arrive around dinner time, so that's a good start, then a moonlight stroll on the beach.   :-*

Do you plan to brave the rush hour interstate or do you want to take my cross-country route?

Playing it by ear, depends on when we "really" get out of Buford

Now, now, now!  I didn't say nothing about a stroll and roll.  Only a stroll that we would all take.  Definitely wouldn't want to interfere in with anything else.  If you show up with a blanket and wine, we'll head out in the other direction.

Right now, it's
Don and Darrel
Raydar
Me and Ray
You and Anne
Theresa has to work but told Jeffrey he could go.
SportCoupe said he lives about 10 minutes away so I asked him to join us for a while.

Of those that expressed some interest, no one else has responded.

Change of plans; Anne will go to work with me Friday morning, so we will be leaving Norcross directly around 11:30 ish and head straight down to Tybee. No sense in driving all the way back to Buford first.

Are we all heading in to Savannah on Sat evening? If yes, I can set up an itinerary depending on what folks would like to do, or are we just going to "wing" it?

JUST AN FYI FOR THE TYBEE GROUP:

Swim in areas where we have Lifeguard towers. Our Ocean Rescue Guard towers are stationed in front of the north beach parking lot, at Center Street, and between 14th and 18th street on the south end of the beach near the Pier. Our guards are on duty in the chairs from 11 am to 7 pm on the weekends starting in April and continuing through September. Guards are also on duty during the weekdays until the end of September from 11 am to 5 pm.

- Do not walk onto the sand bar at low tide between Tybee's south end and Little Tybee Island. The sand bar looks very inviting when the tide is low but gets covered with water very quickly as the tide comes in. The area also has very strong currents that can quickly knock you off of your feet. Many people have lost their lives because they got caught out there as the tide came in. Please heed the warning signs that our City has placed in the area and avoid this sand bar.

- Also, as you drive on Tybee, be aware of pedestrians crossing Butler Avenue and Highway 80. We have designated crosswalks at all the numbered streets on Butler between 3rd and 16th street. State law dictates that if a pedestrian steps into the crosswalk, drivers in all four lanes of Butler MUST come to a stop. Failure to yield to pedestrians in a designated crosswalk comes with a minimum $260.00 fine. The last thing we want to do is give out tickets to drivers not aware of this law but more importantly, we do not want a family to experience a tragic accident that could have been prevented.

Everybody remember to bring your FRS radios.  Tybee Island bunch will be on channel 7.  For you Pigeon Forge folks, hope it's cooler up there than forecast for Tybee at around 100 degrees.

Want me to email you a great program that captures the screen (or any cropped area)? With it all you'd have to do is pause the video & snap the photo you want.
