Title: Brake Upgrade
Post by: gavino on June 26, 2011, 10:05:31 pm
i am getting a 3800sc motor swap by Whodeanies customs next month. My thoughts are will the stock brakes be able to handle the added HP?   i installed 17" wheels and the lower spring kit a year or so ago.

Do you have any recommendations or insights about which kit to use or which way to go,  West Coast has a nice kit by the $$$ is hard to live with.  Then there' the master.  Does that need an upgrade too?

Probably the easiest brake upgrade is the Grand Am brakes.  You could do them only on the front, or front and rear.  That will give you vented brakes and all you need change are the rotors, calipers and mounts.  Dean could easily do that for you.  You will loose the emergency brake function if you put them on the back.

That swap would give you pretty good stopping power under most street driving conditions and greatly improve stopping power under mild performance driving.  I ran 40 minutes at Road Atlanta with stock brakes without any brake fade, but I used my gears extensively for braking assistance.

I have the Grand Am upgrade on the front of my 86 SE, and the Grand Am/Seville upgrade on the rear.
See this thread (http://www.fiero.nl/forum/Forum2/HTML/083566.htm) on Pennock's about the Grand Am/Seville upgrade, and my implementation is near the end of the thread.
This combination works well with the stock master.
