Today I replaced the water pump.
Duke water pump replacements are aggravating to say the least, especially the two bottom bolts
The reason I replaced it: On the day of the Polar Bear Run, Shanine's belt snapped on the way to the meeting. It had squealed occasionally, and I guess that morning it just locked up on her.
So after the knuckle-busting replacement, I wanted to burp the system, and it turns out that there was NO thermostat in the darn thing!
Replaced it and all seems to be good again, except I can't get the temp gauge to work.
Shorted both cables to ground with ignition on; one turns on the warning light, the other one makes the gauge swing all the way. Hence, I know the circuitry and gauge are good. Have tried 3 (THREE!!) temp-sensors and it still won't work!
Any ideas?

Pull one from another known working duke engine?
You have another one of those?
Keep in mind this made in china $#%@ , I went through 4 oil pressure unit before we found one that worked correctly.
We ended up buying AC deco - GM part at the dealership.
Worked perfectly.

One of em was brand new from O'Reillys (AC DELCO). Shanine has the only duke in the family.

Gauge sending units are the same on the 4 and 6. Use this chart http://gafieroclub.org/bbs/index.php?topic=641.msg4644#msg4644 and an ohmmeter to test the sending unit at the parts store before you buy it. You can closely guestimate the ambient temperature of the store. Before I became aware of this chart, I used the 'known good one from a donor' method on your 85.

yes i rememebr the water pump swap...
The swap was the least issue for us... it was the darn pully that was our issue. All the replacement water pumps had the wrong pully or did not come with one and ours would not press on...
Did the gauge spike or are you getting no reading at all. I have read about pegged gauges that get stuck and will not read or will read wrong after spiking... maybe the gauge is the culprit... Now you know why I have an autometer gauge ... Something was wonky with my cooling curcuit, so the sensor was swapped for the autometer and the fan was hot wired.... Thats another one of my challenges I will face soon...
What about Annes gauge from the old body... did it swap to the new body?

All a moot issue now, because the PurpleHaze won't fire up. Just quit after I put in the fourth (4th!!!) temp sensor. I've replaced the gauge with a known good one also

How hot did it get when the water pump belt came off... Anne said there was steam?
Do you have spark? Right after we swapped the pump in the indy... like almost immediately, the coil died... I know, just cause one duke did it...
What were the conditions of the quiting... stall and then won't crank... is it trying to crank?

She's running again; all I did was wait a few minutes
Anne's "steam" was actually oil burning around the valve cover. When the belt snapped, she got hot enough to start pushing oil thru on the back side of the valve cover, which is dripping down on the exhaust manifold. Guess that's my next project :-\
Man, why doesn't the day have at least 48 hours?!?
Between running a company and two Fieros needing work, I seem to only be able to get in enough time for a nap.

Anne's "steam" was actually oil burning around the valve cover. When the belt snapped, she got hot enough to start pushing oil thru on the back side of the valve cover, which is dripping down on the exhaust manifold. Guess that's my next project :-\

Ah I got some tricks to help with the valve cover! Mine is rock solid with no leaks! I have some f-body load spreaders for the valve cover bolts which help it sit more even. I used a rubber gasket with mine and flattened the factory tamping on the mating surface.
And if you go to use a gasket, you have to remove the factory tamping on the cover's edges. Some say the liquid gasket makers are what you should use on the valve cover that has the tamping still in place. The tamping holds the cover up off the mounting surface so the liquid gasket has a pocket to seal.
Let me see if I can find my old thread...
