General Fiero Discussion / How can I tell if it's a 3.4L?
« on: December 03, 2020, 12:27:03 pm »

Subject says it all.  How can I tell if a 3.4L has been swapped in if the original 2.8L upper plenum is used?

General Discussion / Happy Thanksgiving
« on: November 26, 2020, 08:38:01 am »

Happy Thanksgiving y'all

Did anyone get the rotisserie option with their Fiero?  Believe a turkey could be roasted right over the engine!  Think this was a one year option along with the pizza oven in '84.

Tech Tips, Tech Questions / Anyone use Pulstar plugs?
« on: November 22, 2020, 10:17:44 am »

I want to keep my Fiero "looking" original but performing better.  Adding a 7730 ECM, 1.6 rockers, port matching the intake, and keyless entry doesn't detract from the "look".  Either would a 3.4L, but that's way outside my skill level.

Pulstar plugs, reviewed here: https://www.ericpetersautos.com/2020/11/20/plug-n-play/ and for sale here: https://pulstar.com/ should add a very few HP.

Has anyone tried them?  Anyone even hear about them?

General Fiero Discussion / There's a beer riding on this

New Fiero video.  This time vs an '01 Prelude.

The stakes are high.  Talk up the Fiero so I can win a beer.

BTW, I do not sound like a Muppet.

Tech Tips, Tech Questions / Losing Coolant -- sloooooowly
« on: September 22, 2020, 07:43:59 pm »

Fiero Tech Wizards, I'm losing coolant.  No puddles or drips under the car.  Oil is nice and clean.  Heater core replaced in 2014/2015.  No wet carpet inside, but I can smell coolant while driving.  According to this http://www.fiero.nl/forum/Archives/Archive-000001/HTML/20160323-2-126515.html it could be the lower intake.

Any other ideas?  Anyone experience this issue?

BTW, drove from Augusta to Greenville, SC Friday (~220 miles.  Over 30 MPG).  Started with a full reservoir, now only a few inches of coolant remain.

Tech Tips, Tech Questions / 2.8L jerking during acceleration
« on: August 17, 2020, 09:38:33 am »
Re-posting in it's thread...

Driving back from Gray my car started chugging during acceleration.  Figured it might be a bad batch of gas.  We've been getting a lot of heavy rain and filled up (6.5 gallons) at a reputable -- but not my usual -- gas station before the drive.  This morning I went to COSTCO and put in 9 gallons of their best 93 octane.  The drive home was improved but not better.  Went for another drive this afternoon and the chugging has definitely not gone away.  Acceleration from a stop is also slower.  Has trouble maintaining 55 in 5th going up a slight hill with cruise on.  Slight smell of coolant, but don't seem to be using any, and the odor has been around for a few months.  No one else seems to detect it.

Work done this year:
Before July, new coolant reservoir from the Fiero store and all that implies.
July, car wouldn't start.  New spark plugs, coolant temp sensor/ignition, spark plug wires.
August, new tires.
BTW, cat, distributor, and heater core replaced in 2014.

Any ideas?

Subject sums it up: What does a coolant bubble feel like when driving?

Can the driver tell there's a bubble anywhere other than the temp gauge?

Tech Tips, Tech Questions / Time to buy tires
« on: August 04, 2020, 05:19:48 pm »

The time had finally come to get new tires.
Front are P205/60R15  I'm ok with that.
Rear are P215/60R15 which I'd like taller, in order to give my Fiero more of a crouching stance.

Will P215/65R15 tires fit without any problems?  Not too concerned if the speedo is off by a bit.

Any suggestions on tire brands and sizes since Michelin doesn't seem to have anything?

Tech Tips, Tech Questions / Padding around Aux Gauges
« on: July 16, 2020, 12:05:01 pm »

Any ideas how to make the padding around the GT's aux gauges stick to the gauge's hard plastic casing?
Mine keeps pulling up and away from the bottom edges.

Tech Tips, Tech Questions / Fiero won't start
« on: July 09, 2020, 10:16:11 am »

Here's the story...

Wanted to go for a drive last night and couldn't get my '88 GT to start (manual transmission).  Cranked, but wouldn't kick over.  Eventually I tested the battery, decided it was low and charged it overnight.  This morning I checked the battery, around 14 Volts, and reinstalled it.

Once again, tried to crank, but wouldn't start.  Then, EVERYTHING went DEAD.  No lights, no gauge movement with the key on, nichts, nada, nothing.  Then my auto-door lock activated...

EVERYTHING was ALIVE.  So I tried to restart the car.  Tried to crank, then everything died again until once again everything came back.

Any ideas?  What's the fix?

I need a non-leaking coolant reservoir for my '88 GT.

Any recommendations where to get one?
