Club Events / April 12th (Saturday) Get-together
« on: March 30, 2025, 01:05:47 pm »
Charlie, John C, and I are planning a restaurant get together on 4/12.
Location will tentatively be in the Smyrna/Marietta area. Probably around lunch time, but that is also somewhat flexible.
If anyone is interested, please jump in and comment, or just show up. (Subliminal message...  if we know ahead of time, we can save a chair for you.)

I'm happy that you guys are okay. It was very windy, here. My solidly mounted TV antennas (all pointed towards "civilization") got turned about 45 degrees. But no damage.
It sounded like it rained a great deal, but our rain gauge only showed about 1" of accumulation, so all of that racket must have been wind.

We did. No damage at all.
At one point, there was a tornado to the northwest of Roanoke AL, that was headed straight for us. We went and hid in our center-most bedroom, with all the dogs.
At about 1 AM, it just dissipated at the state line. I told Tammy to go back to bed, and I stayed up and watched the weather radar and listened to the TV coverage until everything had passed. I finally went to bed at ~3 AM.
I'm mostly caught up on my sleep, now.

How did you do? I figure it was probably 4-5 AM by the time it made it out that way.

...annnnd here we go again.
Sitting here, about 15 minutes from the Alabama line, so we're going to be looking the storm right in the teeth.
I've been working most of the afternoon to put all the lightweight stuff away, and park the lightweight vehicles (like the box trailer) on the "leeward" side of the shop.
Looks like it's gonna be fun. Not.

Y'all stay safe.

Tech Tips, Tech Questions / Re: IAC control input
« on: March 13, 2025, 12:07:26 pm »
After sitting all night, the car started and idled smoothly this morning.

Good info! I'm happy that you got it sorted.
I would be curious if the MAP sensor was leaking vacuum, or if it was just "bad", and giving an erroneous reading.

I'm not thinking that there should be much of a difference between how the 2.8 ran, and how the 3.1 runs. So either I'm wrong, or something changed with the swap.
I'm guessing that you kept the "original" injectors. Just to test, try unplugging the fuel regulator, before you start it. Cap off the hose or fitting that supplies the vacuum. (From memory, I believe it's a "T" fitting that also goes to the MAP sensor.) This will allow full fuel pressure to get to the injectors. If it's running lean, that could possibly help it.
I think I remember scanning it, but I don't remember what the fuel trim looked like. But it's not going to show any fuel trim response in open loop, anyway. The O2 sensor has no effect when the engine is cold. It sits at "midrange", and the ECM plugs in a baseline value. It has to start switching before the ECM goes closed loop and starts responding to it.
Also, in closed loop, it's already mostly warmed up, so it won't require as much fuel.

Something that occurred to me... The 85 V6s had a documented idle issue, especially with the A/C on. I experienced it with my 85 GT, back in the day. Ron Robinson experienced it with his 85 SE.
In Ron's case, the fix was a new ECM. I ended up trading the car before it was fixed.
If you've got a spare (any year V6) ECM with a manual chip, it might be worth a try.

I remember when Ron Scantlin tweaked his 3.4 chip for the infamous hunting idle. Seems like his fix had to do with supply voltages, and how the injectors responded at different values.
Did you also keep the same alternator that was on the 2.8? It might be worth watching the 12v source to the injectors. (If you can get to the connector, it will be either of the pink wires. Or you can measure it at either of the TBI fuses in the fuse block. There is one for each bank. Or at the EGR solenoid, which is fed by one of those fuses.)
If the voltage is going "too high", the ECM could be restricting the injectors pulse. This will cause the engine to slow down, in turn causing the voltage to drop. Then the ECM will try to correct for THAT, by opening the IAC AND pulsing the injectors longer.

It also occurs to me that any dis-continuity between the alternator and the battery (positive OR ground side) might contribute to this. The battery will act like a buffer - or a filter - connected to the alternator. Will help to smooth out voltage spikes and sags. Check your grounds between the engine and the frame, and the battery. There is also a fusible link between the alternator and the terminal strip next to the battery. Might be worth a look. Of course, that doesn't explain why it only does it when cold.

For what it's worth, my 4.9 does the same thing, but only when it's very hot, and I get off the highway with the A/C running, and come to a stop. I still haven't fixed that.
All of this is pure conjecture, though. YMMV.

...annnnd, it's back!
I've been receiving the "403 Forbidden" message for about a week. Asks for my user name, which it apparently doesn't like.
But now it's working. Go figure.
Anybody else? Or was I just not holding my mouth just right?

Contact Jason Spade at www.spadecustoms.com

He's near you, right off GA. 16 in Senoia. You couldn't ask for a better Fiero mechanic.
...

Exactly my thoughts. And he knows 4.9s very well. He's building one (I think) as I type this.

And Carrollton/Roopville got... zip. Nada. Bupkis. Just flurries.
But it's colder than a witch's brass monkey. Was 14 degrees when I looked at the thermometer, early this morning.
Newnan and Franklin (ten minutes south of us) got clobbered, however. It's like the Ice Road Follies.

The Market / Re: Want To Buy: Positive Battery Cable
« on: January 20, 2025, 07:38:44 pm »
I'm afraid that if an idiot other than me works on it they may hook the wrong black cable to the wrong terminal.

I believe that Harbor Freight sells differently colored heat shrink tubing in various sizes. You could slide some red heat shrink on from the "small" end, and slide it up to next to the terminal.
Most "reasonable" (yeah... I know) people would take that hint.

Come on up to Rome if you lose power.

Thanks for the offer! Y'all can do the same. But it's a long drive in the snow or especially on ice.
But we also have a generator. It hasn't been tested "under fire" yet, but it should do okay.

Weather dot com is predicting snow showers for my area, Tuesday night through Wednesday morning. With a low near 20, and a high of 33.
We may be in for "Snowpocalypse - The Sequel". Or not.

Edit... They've changed the forecast since yesterday.
Now it's PM snow showers, Tuesday night, with a low of 15.
AM ice, Friday morning, with a low of 29.

So we might still get a chance to sit in the dark.  :-\

We actually kept our lights on, for the duration. I was very surprised.
We had 3-4" of snow. Rome apparently only got 1"

Steve!!!  Tied up with a few friends?  Bondage and  Discipline!?   ;D

Hey... I own a Fiero. By definition, that makes me at least a little bit of a Masochist.

Not going to make it this weekend. Going to be tied up with some friends, most of the day.
