Tech Tips, Tech Questions / Re: I think my clutch broke
« on: May 29, 2016, 12:58:27 am »
This is precisely how mine failed when I parked it two years ago. Had to get mine home the same way too. Spring came out of the clutch disk and prevented proper disengagement. Unlike you though I was just 'certain' my new clutch hadn't failed. Wrong.  :-\  Bought clutch master, slave, FS steel clutch petal and a Rodney adjustable clutch banjo and it still wouldn't disengage. Felt fine all the way to the floor but just wouldn't let go. Throw out bearing rattled some but still together. Good call on pulling the motor and getting to the root of it.

The clutch that failed for me was a Luk, I'm bought a Valeo one this time. Like you I have the 3.4, beginning to wonder if I should have went with a stage 1 instead of stock replacement for the 2.8. In all fairness though I did push it quite a bit.

Sounds like a good theory. I'm going to see how it does with the poly first since I'm more or less stuck with it :) For what its worth the KYB shocks I'll be installing in the back are GR2's which are supposed to be a good bit softer then the Gas-A-Just ones I'm running up front. This wasn't by design however- seems these are the only ones KYB makes for the Fiero nowadays.

When I got the car back in 2009 it was out of necessity since I needed a daily driver and had $1500. The money I did spend went into the making the engine and brakes reliable and other things that allowed the car to run. The suspension was an afterthought. The entire time I've had the car it's had the original suspension, even shocks. Heck even the tires were installed in 1993. I don't really have a great driving Fiero to compare it to as a baseline since mine is the only one I've ever ridden in so I'm hoping that even the harsh ride I'm in for will seem pleasant compared to what I'm used to. I'm used the car seeming to 'float' at highway speeds and I've had it swap ends on me several times.  :-\  If the road is wet I'm used to the rear of the car sliding out 20 degrees or more in place before it takes off because of the old tires (the extra torque of the 3.4 doesn't help). I'm used to u-turns becoming 270 degree turns regularly. On a hard launch (when I can get traction) I'm used to the front end lifting like its trying to pick up the wheels while the passenger side rear drops. I can tell much of the power is being used to compress the springs. The first time my wife drove it (with me in the passenger seat) she spun it out 180 degrees making a left turn out of a gas station parking lot.

By the way, I don't know if my 2.8 was in really bad shape or what but switching to the 3.4 made the car feel unbelievably quick (when I could get traction). I mean like 4 cylinder vs 6 cylinder type of difference.

Clutch I ordered awhile back, Luk I think.

Handling is mostly what I'm after- not intending to DD this. When I swap the cradle I'll go with the Arraut coilovers and maybe drop spindles in the front with new front  stock springs. Mine has the WS4 ones from the factory hopefully FS will still sell them when I'm ready. Not excited about extra cabin noise but it occurred to me they would have to really loud to hear them over my exhaust. My exhaust note in 4th is difficult to hold a conversation over  ;)

Went to put on my front wheels and noticed the ball joints were worn. Went to order ball joints, turned into ball joints and other stuff. Other stuff turned into the whole suspension. I had planned on driving to the next meeting but this will probably take me more than just a couple of weekends to finish. If anyone wants a writeup or pictures of anything I'm doing let me know. I had planned on swapping in my 88 cradle this go around but found the unplanned brake upgrade I would have to do to make it safe to drive would require more money and a new set of wheels  :(

front upper and lower ball joints
front inner and outer tie rods
rear lower ball joints
rear tie rods and ends
rear hubs
front wheel bearings
all poly bushings, end links etc.
engine/trans mounts
4 lowering springs
aluminum cradle bushings
shocks
struts
rear camber kit

also, flow matched pintle injectors (having idle problems with the 3.4ohv disc injectors)
new clutch kit and flywheel
all new hoses

At least I'll have a cradle to bolt the L32 to until that fateful day 5 years from now when I can afford the rest of the stuff I need for that swap  :-\

Thanks again for the wheels!

I just replaced the rubber with new Toyo Extensa A/S in the sizes you recommended- 215/60 front 225/60 rear. They balanced out perfect thanks for taking good care of them.

Pardon the dust, with the cradle out I haven't been able to get it outside to wash it in... um like 2 years. Hopefully that will change soon. Need to replace my worn suspension first. Have everything apart, at least the rear will be easy.  ;D

Looks great- nice find and grats!

I've wanted a red '88 GT forever but whenever I have the money to buy one they're nowhere to be found.  :-\  So far this is closest I've been to owning one (or at least parts of one). Sad day

Tech Tips, Tech Questions / Coil over question
« on: May 06, 2016, 12:25:39 am »
So I'm getting my 85 SE put back together and I have a coil over question. I'm wanting to buy or build some coil overs and I'm currently using the 85 engine cradle. I have an 88 cradle and plan on doing a swap in the future- just not sure how far out it will be. Maybe a year? I'm curious if anything I put into coil overs on the pre-88 can be reused for the 88 cradle swap. If I'm going to have to scrap everything I'm going to have a hard time trying to justify the expense to make it work presently.

Hey!

Great meeting you too. Meant to reply earlier but this has been a crazy week  :-\

Yes, the group was kind enough to pass a slightly used but very well loved bumper reinforcement my way along with a good absorber. I took a couple of pics side by side with the replacement- didn't realize how bent my old one was. I set it on some sawhorses and set my bumper cover on it and hopefully gravity will do its work. I lashed it through the bolt holes with parachute cord to hold it straight and tight against the bar. I'll check it out this weekend and maybe apply a little heat and see if I can reshape it a bit.

I'm busy too for the next couple of weekends but I'll hit you up toward the end of the month and see if we can get together. It would give me some time to clean up too, seriously it looks like Fiero threw up in here.

Also looking for a notchback rear bumper reinforcement (egg crate?). It is a bumperpad car I think I read these should be interchangeable between all '84 and 85 base and SE cars.

Fierofool- PM sent!

Good to know, thanks. Silver works fine too actually  :)

Gold or black lace wheels would be cool, not sure what other colors they came in. If you have good tires on them, even better. Going on a black 85 bumper pad V6.

Just priced out some tires to replace my 1993 Goodyear Eagle GT II's on the stock 6 inch rims- $700 installed? Time for different wheels. Always liked the lace ones.

Also looking for some used 84-87 rear coil overs, a pair of 88 rear knuckles, lateral links, and toe links.

Hey Raydar

Sorry to hear you're not feeling well. It doesn't sound like you're too far away- I'm near 278 (Jimmy Lee Smith) and 61 (Villa Rica Highway). I know Brownsville Road and 278 is just on the other side of Hiram, maybe 15 minutes. I'd have to look at a map to see where it intersects with 92.

Let me know when you're feeling better maybe we can meet up sometime.

@Tha Driver: I may take you up on that. I've been meaning to schedule a visit to commerce any to get with you about the 88 suspension parts since we spoke last spring.

@Fierofool: I almost bought a Luk but Rock Auto emailed me awhile back about a wholesaler closeout on a Valeo 5230221 clutch kit for $44.75. We'll see how long that lasts.  I took another look at the throwout bearing that came with the last clutch and now I'm suspecting it as the culprit. Its rattles and has a lot of play to it. Come to think of it there was a bit of a hiss in neutral with the clutch out on the day it failed.

@Raydar, Fierfool: It looks like it might be hard to replace the cover if I mess up. Looks like the 85 GT didn't have bumper pads and the other bumper pad Fieros of any year didn't have dual exhaust. Mine says SE on the sails and is badged 2M6 on the decklid. The car came with a plaque mounted inside that reads "Custom built for Chris Knighton" (the previous owner who I bought it from)
