Article: Getting debris out of your eyes.
« on: February 04, 2012, 08:30:43 am »
If you work on cars, sooner or later you're going to get something in your eye. Usually it's metal from grinding, or dirt (sometimes rust) falling when you're under the car. Your eyes cannot be replaced, so ALWAYS wear safety goggles whenever possible. Safety glasses are not as good, as things can find their way around them. But if (when) you DO get something in an eye, here are some tips to help you out.
 1) Metal; specifically ferrous metal. A magnet will usually pull it right out. If you don't already have one, buy a small strong magnet & keep it on hand for just this reason.
 2) Anything other than ferrous metal. Flushing your eye with water is the commonly recommended procedure. I'll let you look it up for more info on that.
 3) Recently I got a piece of tiny fiberglass fiber in my eye. Had a hell of a time with it. Didn't have anyone around & was trying everything to get it out. Magnet didn't work, so I thought it might be fiberglass, so I tried flushing it out with water using a Murine "bulb" out of an ear cleaning kit & bottled water (I don't have clean faucet water). Didn't work. But I came up with another idea. Use the bulb to SUCK the piece out. I couldn't do it myself (because I couldn't see it), but I finally got it to a point where it didn't bother me with my eyes closed so I went to bed. The next day a friend was coming over to work on his car.
When he got here, he looked at it & confirmed it was a "tiny white strand". Yep fiberglass. Used the bulb to suck it out & he got it first try. Talk about relief!
If you don't have a "Murine for ear Wax Removal System" pick one up. First of all, you'll be surprised what you get out of your ear & how much better you'll be able to hear. Second, could save you a trip to the eye doctor.
