Apricot kernels are under review in Australia & New Zealand by FSANZ (Food Standards Australia & New Zealand). Food standards Australia has issued the following proposal P1016 outlining a review of the sale of apricot kernels and clearly defines its intent to banning apricot kernels in the interest of public safety.
The review provides 5 options with a recommendation to implement option 5 which states:
to prohibit raw apricot kernels or substances derived from raw apricot kernels from being intentionally added to food or offered for sale as food.
It is not clear when exactly this will be implemented and enforced however it is expected to be in the next coming months during 2015.
The OzNatureShop will continue to supply apricot kernels whilst it is legal to do so.
Apricot kernels have a shelf life of well over 24 months if kept refrigerated so they have a good shelf life. Our Australian apricot kernels are fresh and processed/cracked from the shell within weeks prior to being sold.
In general Australian Apricot Kernels are difficult to source and process and we don't know for how much longer we may be able to supply apricot kernels due to this coming legislation.
