The old Fordamatic and Chevy PowerGlide into the early 60s could be push started.  There's a joke about that that I'll post when I get on a pc.
There are three kinds of men:

1.    The ones that learn by reading.
2.    The few who learn by observation.
3.    The rest of them have to pee on the electric fence and find out for themselves.    Will Rogers

Correct old transmissions were made much different than today’s. Most older transmissions were more like automatic manuals. So yes it would work. Though if I had a car I didn’t care about I’d love to try and see what damage it causes.

Maybe Pat will donate his old one.  Might be hard to tell which damage was done before and during towing, though.

Shouldn’t be too hard. We’d be looking for mechanical damage not clutch or seal damage.

Apparently, some vehicles have enough lube to be OK, but in other vehicles, there is a set of planetary gears that will be above the oil.

My Silverado, for example, requires that the transfer case be in Neutral for a dinghy tow.

Reading online, no automatic Toyota can be dinghy-towed without transmission damage, partly due to minimal fluid used in the transmission.

The Escape prior to 2013 could be safely dinghy-towed.

Apparently, even some manual transmission vehicles can no longer be dinghy-towed.
