AC compressors?
« on: January 20, 2021, 05:34:33 pm »
There were 2 AC compressors for the V6 Fiero.  My understanding was that the AC compressors were interchangeable, but do these AC compressors have different mounting brackets?

I upgraded without changing mounting brackets.
There are three kinds of men:

1.    The ones that learn by reading.
2.    The few who learn by observation.
3.    The rest of them have to pee on the electric fence and find out for themselves.    Will Rogers

The earlier compressor was the DA6, I believe.  Bring an '88, mine should have the HR6.  The mounting locations appear to be completely different, for the replacement HR6, compared to what is in my Fiero.  The replacement DA6 appears to have the same mounting points.

My model numbers above may be slightly off.

Our compressors don't have pins in the case sections to align them.  The compressors are used on a variety of vehicles, so one end might be clocked for a different vehicle, though it's the correct compressor for a Fiero.

One mount point is 2" closer to the center, on one compressor.  Clocking likely won't fix that.

Well, supposedly, the DA6 is not compatible with R134a, which may be why mine leaked (the one in my Fiero appears to be a DA6).

The DA6 compressor is in.  It fits.

I don't remember which compressor I bought for the 87, but it was listed as compatible with R12 and R134a.  It was charged with R134a.

This one says it has PAG oil in it, and that it is compatible with R134a.

My understanding is that the DA6 and HR6, as used on a Fiero, are the same externally, and only different internally. I never had any trouble buying a compressor specified as for a V6 Fiero (any year) and having it not fit. I replaced the compressors on my red 86 SE and my 88 silver Formula. Except for the way the hoses seal to the compressor (they changed that), they were all the same. Some hoses seal with O-rings, and some with washers, if I remember correctly. If your old compressor hoses sealed with O-rings, and your new one requires washers, you may have to find some, as they won't come with the compressor.

The more complex the mind, the greater the need for the simplicity of play.

Well, it will be charged and tested, when the weather warms up.
