Several months ago, I decided to purchase a new car cover to protect my paint and to reduce the heat inside the car during these summer months. Thru the years I've generally used the Tyvek covers. They do a very good job and they have a soft textured inner surface that is kind to the vehicle finish. I've had 3 of them in all and the shortcoming I find with them is that they eventually get a lot of cracks in them caused by folding and they begin to let water and dirt come through.
I've also used covers that were actually made of paper. Of course, they don't last as long, but they are effective for a decent time. They will eventually begin to come apart. Another benefit is that you can burn them rather than disposing of them in a landfill.
The current cover I'm using is a Seal Skin. This has a rubberized feel outer surface and a flannel lined inner surface. It is supposed to be waterproof, but I have noticed there is some minor water seepage. Seal Skin claims to have a cover that's a perfect fit for every car. They guarantee the fit. My experience with the 87 Fastback is that it does fit very well. There are no spoiler or mirror pockets so the cover tends to channel over the mirrors allows water to puddle on the deck lid. My remedy for that is to place a large beach ball on the deck lid and place the cover over it. The cover doesn't touch the ground at any point around the car. I haven't tried it on the 86 Notchback but I suspect that it might hit the ground in the area of the rear wheels.
The cover comes with a storage bag, a security cable that passes underneath the car and secures through a heavy nylon grommet on either side. There is also a small padlock included. It would probably be about as effective against theft as the small braided cable but would be very effective against heavy winds blowing the cover off. The hem of the cover is elasticized to keep it snug at the bottom.
When storing the cover, it seems to be very bulky when folding it. I was apprehensive that I would be able to get back into the storage bag in which it came. By folding it in half width-wise while it's on the car, then in half again, it can then be folded down the length in sections. Pressing the air out as you go along, and it will indeed fit into the bag and nestle securely in one corner of the trunk or on top of the spare tire.
