86 GT Won't Start
« on: June 03, 2013, 06:12:55 pm »
Does anybody know what could be wrong with my 86GT? It won't start up and run. I've already replaced the module, pickup coil, coil wire, ignition coil, rotor button, and checked the firing order. The timing right now is set on TDC. But I can still turn the distributer to adjust it a few degrees.

I guess I'll just pay a local garage to fix it since nobody here knows how to fix it.

Can you hear the fuel pump run when you turn on the ignition without starting the car?
Can you hear the pump relay click when you turn on the ignition without starting the car?
Pull a spark plug wire and insert an old spark plug.  Have someone start the car while you check for spark.
If you have spark, remove the air intake tube and spray some brake cleaner or starting fluid into the intake and see if it will fire.
If it does fire off then quit, you have a problem with the fuel system.
Swap out the two relays mounted on the firewall behind the air cleaner.  One is for the AC and the other is for the fuel pump, but are identical.  If the relay is bad, this will diagnose it.
If the relay is good, then your problem may be with the MAP sensor or the vacuum line from it to the pressure regulator is unplugged or broken.
At worst, if everything else checks out, the fuel pump has failed.

Code 12 indicates that the ECM is working.  It's not actually a trouble code.  If that's the only code flashing, then you have no other problems that can be picked up by the sensors.  Sensors only provide info to the ECM when the engine is running, so if you have a no-start condition, there would be no trouble codes sent and stored in the ECM.

I'm going to my shop and getting the rest of my tools and equipment out next weekend. I have a new fuel pump at the shop.
