Will 88 struts work on 85?
« on: February 12, 2014, 10:28:56 pm »
i bought a set of struts online, and now I'm a little nervous about fitment. Even though they where listed 84-88, I'm worried they won't fit because 88's are different.  I'm trying to fit them on an 85 gt.

They will fit.

Pat's correct.  I'm running a pair from an 88 on my 87.  You can't use anything but the strut itself without modifications, though.

3.    The rest of them have to pee on the electric fence and find out for themselves.    Will Rogers

got my struts in last week.  i had high hopes of installing them today, but wouldn't you know?....they're stuck!  i tried pb blaster, kicking and even swearing them out, but nothing works.  should i throw some heat on them?...or would that ruin the cast knuckle?

Grab your trusty AC recharge kit, place the end of the recharge hose against the ends of the bolt and open the valve.  Frost it up really good.  Then using a drift, smack the end of the bolt.  The freezing will shrink the bolt and help it turn loose.  Dry ice works, too but takes longer.  Putting heat on it will swell the bolt.  You can alternate heat and cold

Hope you're taking it loose with the 3 bolts at the top and not the center strut rod nut.  Removing the strut rod nut can cause it to fly apart.  Best to get it out and then compress the spring.

It's strongly suggested to get 2 NAPA 264-3664 camber adjuster bolts.  Makes alignment much easier.

If you're gonna hit them with 134a, go to Dollar General.  Much cheaper than anywhere else.
