best o2 sensor?
« on: October 15, 2014, 05:16:26 am »
There's a lot of opinions on o2 sensors. The only consensus is Bosch sucks. But what about the others?
Ntk?
Walker?
Ac delco (the new stuff)
Denso?
Others?
Opinions, please.

I'm running a Bosch in my 87 and don't know that I'm having any problems with it.  There are two versions.  One comes with the harness end attached.  The other requires you to cut the harness end from your old sensor and solder it to the new one.  I opted for the readymade one.

The one on the 86, I got from NAPA.  I'm not sure about that one, but I think it might have been Standard Ignition or Echlin.  They sell a couple of USA products.  I paid a little more for it than I would have paid for a sensor at AZ, Advance or O'Rielly and Pep Boys.
There are three kinds of men:

1.    The ones that learn by reading.
2.    The few who learn by observation.
3.    The rest of them have to pee on the electric fence and find out for themselves.    Will Rogers

The reason I'm asking is because i replaced a slow (old) sensor with the Bosch with only minor improvements that lasted for about a week, then i suppose it "broke in". Running rich, low cross counts and rubber band feeling under normal acceleration plus minor idle hunting.
I've grounded, extra grounded and checked with ohmeter.
I'm about to try out the ntk (ngk) and I'll report what i find.

I installed the tgk.
Ok, so one day out....
Acceleration is much better, more consistent, no more rubber band feeling, throttle lift up, whatever you want to call it. I'll be curious to see if it will have any effect on fuel mileage. Currently, I'm seeing 20mpg mostly city.
Exhaust smells different and idle is different.
I haven't hooked aldl to see cross counts yet.
My butt sais this one's better than the Bosch i had in before.  ;)

Help!

ntk
ngk
tgk

?
I'm so confused.

I'm curious as to whether or not you have to disconnect the battery to reset the computer to 're-learn' to the output of the new O2 sensor?
You can't fix stupid but, you can adjust it with a 2x4.

Yes. First rule of messin' with stuff is to clear the ecm. Got that one.
Apparently ngk makes ntk. And I'm probably adding letters to things that aren't supposed to have letters.  :o

I have an NTK O2 sensor. It has easily outlived the (expensive) Delco sensor that it replaced.

That's good to hear.
One week out and I'm sure it's broke inn good now. I've been enjoying the gecko out of all this power on demand. I've got to run it at the track more because I'm starting to scare myself trying to race everyone at lights lol.
I've still got some kind of throttle lift up issue and the only code that ever gets set is a 34 map sensor. So, seeing as how I've replaced that too and tested the new one well, I've got to chase that one down in a new thread.
