For what it's worth, I have never had a Fiero lighter socket that wasn't a little "sketchy".
I removed my lighter socket altogether. Bought one of those multi-outlet socket adapters, and hard-wired it in to the cigarette lighter wiring. (If you want to do that, and your multi-outlet is wired with zip cord, the wire with the "ridge" on the side is almost guaranteed to be the positive side.)
Velcro'd the multi-outlet to the bottom of the dash.
I'm doing the same thing with my newer project, except that I bought a multi-USB socket adapter, since just about everything I own can be charged or powered off of USB.
It'll get Velcro'd to the bottom of the dash, or the side of the radio pod.
