Buzz out of commission for a while
« on: August 11, 2010, 09:36:49 pm »
Today on the way home from work, Buzz (my yellow Fiero) started missing like one cylinder wasn't firing. Then a loud rattle started, like the vibration from missing caused something to break loose in the exhaust. So I pulled into a parking lot and got towed home. I know from experience that running with one cylinder not firing will burn out the catalytic converter, so I pulled off as soon as I could.
I'll be driving the red Fiero until I figure out what the trouble is and fix it.

I'm wondering if it might be that insert that you shimmed, shortly after you bought the car.  Might be time to pull the pan and take a look.  Id hate to see a rod break after all you've done with that  motor.

I'm almost positive the rattle is external. My stepson may have time to snoop around it today. If not, I'll snoop around this evening.

Well, the noise is internal, and there were a few metal flakes in the oil. It's too hot to work on it now, so I'll just drive the other car for a while.

Today I finally found time to pull the oil pan on my 88 duke (Buzz). Everything looks fine, so the noise is still a mystery. Could it be in the valve train?

I told Linda that if you needed to pull the engine, I have a hoist in my garage.

I have a 98 GTP with harness, ECM and possibly transmission available to me for $300, but I don't have the cash to buy it.  Available until this Friday if somebody else wants it.  Or the club could buy it and put it into the Duke Coupe or the 86SE that Scottie's Dad donated to us.

I don't know.  I haven't seen the car.  One of my neighbors found it out here.  He wants the GTP front end and some other body trim to transfer to his SE.  He doesn't want the drive train.  The car was hit in the right rear, otherwise it's OK.  I believe Whodeanie is gonna take the engine.

I was never sure of the problem. I took the engine out and rebuilt it after that, so it doesn't really matter.
