In TV coverage there was a life flight helicopter landing with a totally destroyed vehicle in the background.  There were a number of persons who were also seriously injured.  Aerial views showed a 10 x 10 pop-up canopy with lots of medical debris around it.  Probably where they had sheltered people as they worked on them. 

I don't believe that was what caused our delay.  When we got to the end of the backup, there was a tractor truck sitting in the right lane with a wrecker backing up to it.  It appeared that was the cause of the 12 mile backup on our day.

Leigh-Ann had read an article about the accident: a large SUV crossed the median and hit another vehicle head on, the parents and 1 of 4 kids had died. There were also severe injuries in the resulting pile up

I have owned many SUV's.  They are fine for what they are, but people seem to feel that SUV's are more than what they are, making the person driving an SUV immune from everything.  Large vehicles have many drawbacks.  Some people should not drive at all, let alone an SUV.

Very sad about the parents and child.

Franklin County is up in the area where Budgetman72 lives.  Carnesville and Royston area.

They sound like the same event.
An SUV (Expedition or Excursion, I seem to remember) got "crossed up" somehow, and ended up going across the median and hitting a van head on.
The people in the SUV were from Paulding County. The van contained four men returning from a construction job. Their wives were following in a different vehicle and watched the whole thing.
That's the story from radio/tv, anyway. So sad...

Well, I think, after many hours of mapping and remapping, calculating mileage and times and documenting turns, I have finally thrown in the towel and settled on the last half of the route. 

Something old at the beginning and end with something new thrown into the middle but as always, the North Carolina/Tennessee area always provides some very scenic and thrilling roads.
