just wondering how high of a heat range does a firewall barrier material have to take in order to be considered fairly safe to use?            oldone in c'ville

i found something called a carbon fiber blanket - heres the discription in the catalog. soft, lightweight, flexible, extremely fire and heat resistant. withstands temperatures to 1800 degrees farin. tough, tear resistant. color black. is 1800 degrees high enough to use on firewall? you can get a 4' x 6' piece for $70.00 or 3 pieces for $65.00 dollars each. also comes in 6' x 8' and 8' x 10'.     oldone in c'ville

If you kept all the Fiero heat shields in place, sounds like that should be more than sufficient.  You could even add a little wrap around the clutch fluid line to insulate it.

No, I meant all of the metal heat shields around the exhausts, on the bulkheads, etc.  You'd have to remove some of the shields on the front that protect the harnesses and fuel lines, etc., to remove the old insulation and install the new.  Putting all the metal shields back would be essential.  Of course, you'd have to remove the engine to do the insulation.

Replacing the insulation on the firewall is a pain.  Even cutting it out is a pain.

It's best to do it when you've dropped the cradle for other work.
