Push button start pros/cons
« on: December 21, 2019, 09:40:10 am »
I've been driving a push-start vehicle, off and on.  Anyone have any comments on driving a Fiero with push-button start?

I really like the smart FOB push button start systems. I am very heavily thinking about adding it to my fiero when I do the interior swap.

One of my biggest concerns is that the button is a soft power off.  If you have a new desktop computer, try pressing the power button to turn off the computer.  In theory, you can hold the power button for 5+seconds to turn off the computer; in practice, it could take 10 seconds or more.  At 60 MPH, the car can cover a lot of ground.  Worse yet, think of even 5 seconds of a tesla at full throttle!  Think that's bad?  Turning "off" a modern car doesn't really turn it off.  So, you really can't stop it, when things go wrong.  The throttle is now electrical.  There is nothing to stop an electrical car, when the ehim to run strikes its fance.  Well, nothing but battery depletion, that is.

I can turn off my key, any time.

I used to have a push to start car and I hated it.  A 51 Chevy Club Coupe.  Always had to park it on a hill or slope.
There are three kinds of men:

1.    The ones that learn by reading.
2.    The few who learn by observation.
3.    The rest of them have to pee on the electric fence and find out for themselves.    Will Rogers

LOL!  When I made the post, I had an image of Karate Kid and his mom with that station wagon.

Is that better than hand crank to start?
You needed a steeper hill, to make it start easier.

I had a tractor with a hand crank start.  If it backfired, it'd bruise your hand.

I had a hand crank vibratory compactor in my construction company equipment. Big diesal thing. If you misstimed the decompression release it would almost throw you off your feet. Ouch is an understatement.
