Shock dampning ring on 88 steering rack?
« on: November 12, 2019, 08:14:35 pm »
So I am all but done with the full rebuild of the spare 88 rack I bought from Mark. I just seem to be missing a shock dampner ring. It is #9 on the parts diagram and I can't seem to find one for sale anywhere.

Anyone have any insight?

Here is the diagram I found:

Does not look like an '88 rack, despite the claim of the site.

That diagram is 84-87. 88's are a bit different.

88's didn't have an external shock damper piston as I recall.

That is correct.

This isn't the steering damper, it apoears to be a cylinder that slides into the opposite side of the rack as the bushing. I would guess it is there to protect the rack from damage if the inner tie rod makes contact on full lock. That is only a guess though. Will see if the old one still has it to scavange when I pull it to swap them.

If you can't locate one, try CV Source in Buford.  They rebuild steering racks.  They don't have any on the shelf at the moment but they did have 5 or 6 Fiero racks in stock.  Told him about Rodney's bushing and he was most grateful.
