New Fiero in Savannah (with pictures)

Greetings forum,

My name is John and I live in Savannah, GA. I work as an electrical engineer for a Corporate Jet OEM (Gulfstream Aerospace). I have been into (rebuilding) cars of all sorts for the last 20 years. I have done all stock trucks, 400rwhp naturally aspirated sports cars, 505 rwhp supercharged sports cars, 310 rwhp rotary twin turbos, minivans and 4x4 Jeeps.

I am posting now to add before and after pictures of my "free" 1988 Fiero Coupe 2.5L 5-speed and to introduce myself. I acquired the Fiero from a co-worker that bought it 5 years ago with a locked up motor. He pulled the motor and bought a short block for it and rebuilt the cylinder head. He mounted the block to the cradle (with new clutch) and re-installed the motor/cradle. That was 2006. He lost interest in the little 4 cylinder (he drives a '86 GT with 383 stroker V-8 from archie). He bought a 'vette recently and needed room to restore it so I was offered the little 2.5L Fiero.

I towed it home and completed the motor install and put the interior back together. There were several items missing as he was using it as a parts car over the last 4 years. Here are some pictures I took after unloading it from the car hauler.










I then took pictures today after putting 40 miles on the little Fiero, the first time it was moved under it's own power since at least 2005.

John, you have done a wonderful job in putting it back together and on the road.  Hope that 92bhp doesn't disappoint you too much after all those high horsepower projects you've done.  But of course, you could do a transplant.  Maybe your friend will donate the 'Vette (engine) also. 

Once you feel you've got the bugs worked out and it's road dependable, you're welcome to come up and meet some of the gang. 

If you decide not to do a transplant, it will make a good beginner for that little girl of yours.

If you enjoy Fiero's there are a couple guys in Effingham county with Fiero's. One is red and the other Black (85 GT). And there is a guy that goes to GSU here in Statesboro that drives an 87 GT. I love the car and would love to see yours and spread our knowledge to each other if your ever around Bulloch County.

The Fiero runs well now (after a few sensor and ignition coil replacements. I was having and issue with a very high rpm on cold startups (2600-2900rpm). It always dropped to normal within 15 seconds. I started a thread on PFF asking about the high rpm start and found others with it too. Most concluded that the problem was in the ecm tune. Since I used to play with obdi prom tuning I figured I'd have a go at the Fiero.

I finally got around to pulling the PROM and reading it. I was successful in reading it with my programmer and saved it to my laptop. I then edited the BIN table "IAC Warm Park Position Vs. Coolant Temp". I also lowered my fan turn on temp by 15

Now maybe people won't stare so much in parking lots. LOL.

Come on, now.  We WANT them to stare at our little cars in the parking lots!  Seriously, though, having disclosed your abilities you might find yourself with a second occupation as chip programmer.

Staring because the Fiero looks good is acceptable, but staring because the engine is revving to almost 3000 rpm on startup is embarrassing.

I have no problem with chip programming (obdi only), in fact I would be happy to make simple changes for the forum members. No high performance stuff though, just turning stuff off (codes, egr, etc...) or changing simple tables (fan temps, idle tables, etc...).
