headlight motors again...
« on: January 10, 2012, 07:44:30 pm »
 >:(ok guys i got one for ya tonight i pulled into my drive way and as i did my drivers headlight motor started spinning on its own. While they were all ready up mind you. It keot spining while they were all the way up AND all the way down. I unplugged the ground and onlt thing that changed was the fact the headlight wouldnt move. What would cause this cuz the headlight wont stay all the way up now will only go so far which means crap light output also i decided to head to my fiances house and litterally right as i pulled up to her house it stopped and now it wont do anything weather the ground is plugged in or not and like i said the headlight wont go all the way up even if i put it up manually.

What year is yours?
85/86?
If yes, and you have not upgraded to 87/88 headlights, it sounds like the bumpers that cause the motor to stop running when it reaches either upper dead-point or lower dead-point are worn out. If not unplugged, it will also drain your battery, as they will continue to run, since they don't know that they have reached the end of their travel.

Fierofool is actually our resident expert on this and can give much more advice

The blue one is the barrel-connector, yes?
I'd also unplug the relay, just to be sure

yeah i ran out and unplugged the blue wire and the motor stops when the lights are switched off now because they dont go down and lose power. (i assume) i just need to see if i can get it to stop spinning for the moment because its just plain annoying. Also how much would it cost me to get the newer gen two upgrade?

I saw a complete plug and play Generation II setup with motors and harness on Pennock's Fiero Forum (PFF http://fiero.nl) in the Mall for $100 plus shipping just yesterday.
But I would wait and see what Charlie says (I see he's online viewing your thread as I write) regarding a motor rebuild before going and upgrading

The bump stops have deteriorated but they aren't the immediate cause.  They are an indirect cause.  Now that there's nothing to absorb the shock at the end of the travel, it has stripped the plastic gear or broken the drive plate.  If you want, I have some used gears that will last for a while, but you'd best order a set from The Fiero Store.  Just get the gear like this.    http://fierostore.com/Product/Detail.aspx?s=69674&d=273&p=4   Part # 69674  You'll need 2 of them.  Have them ship fastest method they offer.

I charge $30 labor per headlight to rebuild them.

ok so that gear is the only thing i need then or should i get the whole rebuild kit? I am in between pay checks for my new job so i may onyl be able to buy one for the headlight that went out. Also i may be able to put it in myself iv seen it shouldnt be too hard to do.

I'll extend credit to you.  Knowing how to remove and reinstall the driveplate is the hard part of the rebuild.  In the meantime, unplug the relay for that motor, get hold of the assembly and turn the motor while pulling up on the assembly.  It should come up and stay up.  If it doesn't, let me know.  I have a left side loaner motor here that you can use until I get yours rebuilt, if you want.
