Tail of the Dragon on Discovery Channel
« on: January 25, 2012, 10:02:20 pm »
Discovery Channel has a new (to me) program on, Hell Roads, about the world's most dangerous roads. Tonight's episode featured homicidal highways in China, Afghanistan... and the Tail of the Dragon!

It should air again tonight (Weds, 1/25) at 11:00 pm, and again this Saturday, Feb. 4 at 1:00 pm.

Lots of 18-wheelers, motorcycles and various sports cars vs. The Curves and Switchbacks.

Nice show. Good shots and description of The Dragon but mainly motorcycles and too short (in my opinion). It does bring up the problem of 18 wheelers being there. Point blank, they shouldn't be allowed there, at all, for any reason. If their GPS got them to it, it can get around it.

That's a big 10-4.

You would think that the Truckers Community would forewarn each other to stay out?

Several years ago, I had read on the Dragon website that Swift Trucking was one of the major problems of attempting to navigate The Dragon.  I guess they really weren't too swift.  Printed maps really don't show the severity of the curves.  Someone said that dispatchers sometimes would send a rookie or a renegade driver through there just to teach them a lesson.  For someone up around Maryville, Tn, needing to get down to Murpny, NC, for example, it looks like a good shortcut and compared to other roads that are suitable for trucks, it cuts off probably 100-150 miles.

Truly, there needs to be signage placed at The Dragon's Den on the southern end and up at the lake on the northern end specifying that vehicles over a given length are prohibited.  That should include motor homes towing vehicles, too.  Right HarryT?

1.    The ones that learn by reading.
2.    The few who learn by observation.
3.    The rest of them have to pee on the electric fence and find out for themselves.    Will Rogers

Right on. :) >:( ::) :P   We did it from the bottom end in our 40' Allegro bus towing our Honda CR-V.  It looked like a shortcut on the map.  Once on with a lonnnnnnng vehicle it is nearly impossible to turn around and you keep thinking it will straighten out soon.  NOT.  The day we did it there was a crotch rocket race coming down the road, very exciting.  There were camera crews at many of the corners.  I would love to see some shots of the bike drivers faces when they came around a corner and saw an 8' by 13' tall flat wall with a windshield coming at them.
